Hi Caligari.
Not sure if other folks here are having this issue, but the VRay demo is very unstable over here. I a recent post where I was asking about how to render, I had my avatar scene loaded into TrueSpace 7.5 and at the end of the initial post, I said that VRay didn't render this scene, it just crashed. Well, first, let me say that I haven't been doing a lot of render tests as I've been learning the new interface and the tools. But last night I really got into rendering and I was giving VRay a look but I can't because it crashes just about all the time.
And this isn't just with the scene of me, but with the content from the TrueSpace library itself. If I double click to place the Rynossorous (don't know how to spell that), into a scene, or the Tank Girl, if I click the VRay render, the VRay render window opens and then TrueSpace crashes. If I place a sphere into the scene and VRay render, all is fine. If I add the Solid Metal Rosette D3D Material to the sphere and VRay render, all is fine. But if I add the Anisotropicmap Rosette D3D Material to the sphere and do a render, bang! TrueSpace comes down.
Wondering if this was a problem with my desktop, I installed TrueSpace 7.5 onto my laptop which is a totally different spec machine. I installed manual, video tutorials and then the VRay demo and in there tried rendering the above objects with VRay, but the same crash happened.
Here are the system specs:
Desktop:
Dell Dimension 8400
Pentium 4 - 3.4Ghz
2Gb RAM
NVidia GeForce 6800 256Mb RAM with graphic display drivers up to date.
Laptop
Toshiba
Pentium 4 - 2.4Ghz
1Gb RAM
NVidia GeForce 4400 32Mb RAM with graphic display drives as up to date as I can get them.
Here is a screen shot of the crash.

Anyone else having these issues? If it was happening on one computer I'd say it's the computer fault somewhere, but it's happening on two. |

Not direct help sorry Paul but this info posted lately may be useful: from Tomas
when starting ts type MeshModifiers.EnableCrashReporting(); (edit: into console) [crash reporting will be integrated in 7.51 by default]. when crash occurs, it asks to save minidump. Please post it here.

Sounds like its the D3D shaders - remember those won't render in V-Ray anyway, they are specifically for the real-time engine only. Do you get the crash with any V-Ray shaders?
Thanks!

WOW! I'm going to have to leave this to someone else.....I just had three of the biggest lock-up/crashes I ever had on this computer - couldn't even get a screen grab (tried three times) I took a pic of the screen just before I hit the 'Vray render screen button

That is a V-ray Material (but I guess I'm not going to see what it looks like rendered :) No worrys here, I can't afford Vray anyway...
I may try again, and see where the error log is - if I get it, do you want me to send it somewhere?

Hi, I am new here
There are many still bugs in vray and ts75,of course me and others are very sad.
1-render vray is limited / you cannot render above 2000px...
2-and render crashes...
3-ONLY simples scenes like tutorials are good...if you put something more...
4-vray you need to make you own library, nothing came with him...
5-Is very slow when you use high render...
6-In the vray/max8 you need more confortable control...like 2nd bounces and so on...
7-if you need tutorial...you need to pay, and manual is very simple...
and there no tips like Max8 and so on...
8-In others software, you always free tutorial and there are many patches/ to fix problems.....
9-the better ts is version 6,is fast but with lightworks
10-I still waiting for a good ts7.5 vray.....
Sorry but I am very sad....I work with 3D about 10years, and I used lightscape(not from autodesk)
Let´s again waiting.... have a nice day |

You could zip it up and post it here as an attachment, or mail it to me and I'll forward it along to the appropriate people :)

Thanks, Peter. I've zipped the Error report and provided it with this message. Hope it helps.
Thomas, thanks for letting us know that VRay won't render the D3D textures, yet if you read my initial post, it did render one of them. I'll do more tests with non-D3D textures as I'm interested in seeing what VRay can do myself. |

Thanks Tom - you've reminded me that when I had crashes (the 'vanishing act') I was applying D3D shaders in experimenting (first the BlankD3DShader I think it's called and then re-rendering with other D3D shaders) and I only render in Vray
Vray is absolutely fascinating so I made a beeline for it. Which is an odd way to describe it now thinking about it if one knows anything at all about bees and polarised light. They can't fly you know. They have to walk if no car stops. Wasps on the other hand can fly, but once they get there they don't know where there is on account of the light thing that's why they wear shades

Ok, don't know about other folk here, but VRay doesn't work for me, at all. I created a sphere and textured it with a graphic file. First attempt, I used one from my texture library. Second time, I placed the default Caligari texture image that appears when you select to use a graphical file as a texture map. In both cases, I applied them to the sphere, at wrapping of 4 x 3, nothing I haven't done millions of times. Render in Model side and all is well* (see message below). Go to WorkSpace side and click the VRay render button and the VRay render window appears and then TrueSpace crashes.
Now this is the just a run of the mill sphere with an image textured onto it, but the VRay demo doesn't want to know. And this is on my desktop and laptop.
Are any other folks having these issues?
*
Something else. If I create a new scene, be it in WorkSpace or Model views, it doesn't completely wipe the old scene out. A scene I had loaded which rendered with a graphical image as the background, when I create a new scene, all the 3D model contents are wiped and I get a new scene, but when I render, it's still rendering with the background image set.
Also, rendering with the other engines, not VRay, seems terribly slow. A simple scene, as above, a sphere, with nothing else, seems to take a good few seconds to render. The Render moving down the screen is quite slow and doesn't fly down the screen as it did in previous version of TrueSpace, till it hits the object, at which point it would slow down. This moves slowly down the screen when there is nothing for it to render except a black background.
Are anyone else having these issues too?
Should I try a clean install of TrueSpace 7.5 and see if that fixes it or are these issues known and will be addressed in 7.51? |

Paul,
Yes, I experience the same thing - I believe when I first downloaded the Vray Demo, I did get it to work once or twice. Now, it seems that no matter what (Vray) material I have - it instantly crashes. Like I wrote in another post, it doesn't bother me too much - I like Lightworks, and can't afford Vray :)

Like Splinters, I've had trouble with the full version. Not crashes, but hangs - get's to 99% of on of it's passes and then just stops. The status bar blinks and looks like it's doing something, the Task Manager window shows it's running rather than not responding but it just sits there. Done it on several occassions with simple and complex scenes so it's not an isolated incident. |

I do not believe you should be experiencing these types of problems. Not if your machine is running well, no over-clocking going on and latest video drivers are being used.
Try holding down the control-key when starting ts. From the pop-up dialog, select the "Use default config" switch and check it. Hit "OK" and ts will start in a default state. If problem persists, shut down ts and find default.ctx file in the /ts folder. Delete it and restart ts. See if this helps.
If you decide to do fresh installation, ensure you delete the old installation directory after uninstalling, to ensure no remnants of old install remain. |

Well, I'm kind of glad to see that I'm not the only one having issues, it means it isn't a problem with my computer. Also, disregard my issue with the slow rendering using the LightWorks engine, I had RayTracing turned on (still wrapping my head around the new interface! LOL!).
But still no luck with the VRay demo. Norm, appreciate your input and I did do what you said, but no luck. A scene with a sphere, with an image wrapped around it, 4 x 3, renders fine in LightWorks but VRay crashes upon launching it. My computer isn't over clocked and I have my graphic drivers up to date. Since others are having issues with VRay, I'm not going to do a clean install. |

Just recently I've been playing around with spheres and VRay material. Just created spheres and changed material with different kind of textures. So miminum more than 200 times will have clicked on that VRay render button without any crash.
In attached picture is what I did, dragging textures from window explorer on the material -2- , changing params like wrapping until it turned out OK , then also drag and drop from Materials-Texture / VRay Materials - 1 - and also put material dirrectly from the Material editor - 3 - on spheres.
So that looks not that different for me than what you describe. Attached is the right sphere. Try to load it , render it and then to change the material, it does work for me. |

Hi Emma. Thanks for the sample object to give it a test and see if I can get it to render in VRay, but while it loads fine, when I try to render with VRay, VRay crashes ;(.
If I create a basic object, no texture, and VRay render, it does so fine, but once I texture it, VRay crashes.
I'm going to give VRay a break for now and forcus on the other render engines and the interface. I keep making silly mistakes so need to really sit down and wrap my head around the new interface. |
