cool thread, nicknames are awesome, although most of my nicknames in the past consisted of a variety of profanities and thus decided not to use them as an internet nickname, also In the years to come I was to slowly realise that they were a form of repetative bullying.
Anyway 'Matski' came about when me and a friend at high school decided it was funny to put 'ski' at the end of every word, and as my name is Matthew and my nickname is Matt, it was only natural to be called Matski, of course it barely lasted 3 days but as I discovered the internet more I decided that it would be a suitable nickname as it seemed to be the fashion that every should pick weird names for the internet.
also interestingly, I have to pick Matski007 because someone keeps already using Matski on many websites and domain names, I know the world is big, but how many people would really use that nickname?!, I could understand if I wanted to call myself Neo, but Matski?! whatever heh
I chose 007 because I liked james bond and thus its a number I can easily remember, and the chances of anyone else deciding upon adding that number to end of Matski must be some kind of lost twin or clone or something |

Hmmmm......... (trys desperately to think of an amusing reason for name, and fails)
Mad Mouse Design is the name I picked for my first web site and I have been using it ever since. So far whenever I use it to register on any site its never be taken so either its a good name or so bad that no one else wants it.
I suppose my friends would say I'm more than a little mad and the mouse part just fitted nicely as a play on words i.e. computer mouse and squeak squeak mouse and gave me a good starting place for a mascot for my site.

Cool idea for a thread Splinters!
In my home town many years ago there was a well-known graphic company (which still exists) which produced highly-overpriced graphics work for local businesses and they were strictly limited to producing 2D graphics. They had a name like "SuchAndSuch Visuals" (I won't actually name them in this context!). So whenever I would create 3D Business Graphics for local companies I went under the D.B.A. (doing business as) name of "O'Dwyer Visuals" since my real name is Mark O'Dwyer, and I still do.
Unfortunately, the name "O'Dwyer" is not very common here in the States at all so people would frequently misspell it and therefore misfile it at their shops. Over the course of a few years I would occasionally hear customers say at their shops that when they were talking about having graphics work done someone would suggest me and someone else would say "oh, you mean SuchAndSuch Visuals?" and they would say "no, I mean that 3D Visuals dude."
This happened so often in fact that I eventually decided to actually tell prospective customers to file my brochure under "3D" or "3D Visuals Dude," which not only put my brochure or card at the beginning of their Rollodex (which was nice) but it lead to a huge spike in referral business. :D
And now you know "the rest of the story."

Dragon is a metaphor (years ago my art was solely abt nature and my style almost photorealistic. I stopped ANY art, even doodling for 15 yrs. When I touched pencil to paper again abt 2 yrs ago, having matured and gone thru many 'trying' years, as life tends to give, all my creative work now includes metaphor, hidden meaning, and the concept of duality [light/dark, real/imagined, etc] and I use it in my screen name, art, and writings - Dragon = our Ego = the Beast within.
Ego is a necessary survival mechanism that is useful, but left unchecked, very destructive to ones self and others. Having been schooled in the Daoist 'way', I MUST slay the beast...lol (the image of a knight slaying dragons is cool too so I use that also). Anyway I digress...
Originally when i tried to create a screen name online using 'dragon' and combos there of, they all seemed to be taken, but when i dropped the 'o', the choices opened up so I went with it.
When I tried to come up with a name for this site, Drag-n- lent itself well (drag n drop), so that's that. Being a very visual kinda guy (I can't remember names at all) 'EYE' seemed to work well also since that's what I would be using most with TS ("in the mind's eye", "eye of the beholder", etc).
Well... that's my story.
PS: WIZARD, don't feel bad; I struggle with writing short posts also :)
PSS: Please you all, never think my short, abrupt posts/replies as rude or cold. I just tryin to give my 2 cents worth without wasting too much of your time, cuz... I can yap, no problem :-)
PSSS: Thank you all for sharing |

Hmmmmm..... Uhhh, well, here goes mine.
As my signature states, my real name is John Danowski (and no, I'm not the lacrosse coach at duke!)
When my family first upgraded to cable internet access (from dial up!), everyone got an email address with it, which required a user name. Automatically, the ISP chose "jdanowski" based on my info.
I quickly got into online forums, but always had difficulty signing up because of the fact that "jdanowski" was almost always taken by somebody else. I eventually came up with a variety of names to use, and chose the one that I thought would sound the best: 2much2handle. I used this for a while, but I quickly began to dislike it due to a reason I will not share. So, I changed it again when the forum I had been at (http://lik-sang.com/) closed down. The change was made to 2much4U, and I've been using it since I joined the forum before this one. |

Contrary to what some believe (and you know who you are), my name is not helium spelt wrong.......
Hemulin is a character from a Swedish (though later remastered in English) tv show called the Moomins that I used to watch many years ago. This was about the time that I started using the internet and as I though the name quite amusing (though looking back on it, i'm not sure why :p) I adopted it.
Hemulin is not actually the correct spelling of the name, at the time I started using it I had no idea how it was meant to be spelt, and hemulin looked right so that's what it became, the correct spelling is hemulen....so there it is.... |

Burnart is an approximation or semi-pun using alternate words on my real first name, Bernard - been using it on the web for about a decade now. The little picture I use for my avatar is from a painting I did. I was looking at the paintng on the wall one day and it struck me that this little character was "Burnart" and I just use his name. (The picture looks nothing like me!)
I remember reading a book called "Comet in Moominland" or something similar in about 1969 ....... showing my age now! It was one of the first books that turned me on to reading as a kid. I'm still a voracious peruser and still read kids books because they can be a lot of fun - like cartoons. |

Doctor: "I'm sorry Madam, he's got terminal Hemulin. I'm a fraid he'll be a Moomin for the rest of his life!"
I'm so glad that this mystery is finally resolved - with many Net handles you can tell yourself that you've figured at least some of the significance. For example with Sean's name it seemed at least possible that Naes3d was just his name reversed - but's what's a Nilumeh? I've always wondered, now I know, one more of life's great mysteries solved!! |

ROFL! Good call! I knew you were going to say that! ;) . I can read Tarot cards but that doesn't mean I always understand what I'm reading - actually the same thing goes for a lot of software manuals too! I'm trying to learn MojoWorld at the moment.....
I studied Tarot for many years but I haven't actually picked them up for a long time. The principles within them still serve me daily however. |

Moomins are characters of Tove Jansson's books. She was actually Finnish. I've read them all, my favourites are the black and white comics.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomins, the later comics were drawn by her brother Lars.
TV series and films were made in various countries most well known the Japanese one. |

Mine's a simple one - like Matski, it's just an old nickname dating back a very long time, coined by my fried Daniel (who became Daz), my borther Iain (Iz) and thusly I became Nez, rather than Neil... |

This is a fun thread. In the past I just used to use dborruso or dennisb as a nickname, just variations on my name that weren't commonly taken. When I wanted to have my own domain name a few years ago or longer I was trying to think of something descriptive and short people could remember. I eventually came up with 3dfrog because I love 3d art and I have always had a fascination for frogs. Luckily the domain was available so I took it. I then started using 3dfrog as a nickname on forums so I could be easily identified between my domain and my nickname. I still use variations of my name in some places though, like on irc I use denbo because there are other channels I visit and people still know me as that.
I can relate to splinters losing his name with his friends to a nickname. When I was little I called my liittle sister a baby boop. My siblings found this amusing and started to call me boop. This nickname stuck with my childhood friends all the time I was growing up. When I got older and some of those old neighborhood kids became my drinking buddies they still called me boop. This was so ingrained that when someone referred to dennis they would ask who dennis was, took them a minute to realize I have a name. I wasn't the only one though, we also had the gooch. Occasionally I see some of these guys and I magically turn into boop again. |
