Hi folks. Is it possible to perform collaborative modelling within trueplaces? If so I think it would make for an interesting modelling/animation challenge, taking advantage of truespace's collaborative capabilities.

To keep things simple each team would be composed of two people. To form a team, users could either invite each other to join. They could coordinate to meet in trueplaces to work simultaneously, and also login to work on their projects on their own as well. Assuming of course, that this type of capability is available within trueplaces.

What do you think?

Hi Frootee,

First off, there's a difference between Caligari's existing online "truePlaces" and Caligari's existing online "Shared Spaces." TruePlaces can be accessed either by truePlay or trueSpace7.x but cannot be used in any fashion for actual modeling collaboration (this is intentional and makes sense) due to the fact that trueServe software permissions for that are restricted so people can't just jump into truePlaces with trueSpace and start editing things without Caligari approval.

Caligari did establish a "Shared Space" Server (apart from "truePlaces") which does allow what you are suggesting above (within limits set by Caligari) and access to that "Shared Space" Server (where you can work in realtime collaboratively via TS7.x) is built right into the interface for TS7.x as shown in the image below (the Avatar Icon). Then a Dialog Window will appear where you enter your USername and Password, the same name and password you use for truePlay (if I recall correctly).

You can pre-arrange a time with other TS7.x users to access that Server simultaneously using TS7.x (and perhaps truePlay) but what you do in there should be carefully preconsidered accordingly... I'm sure Caligari wouldn't appreciate (or perhaps even allow) people popping in there to upload huge or complex scenes, for instance, but for allowed uses of that Server you should ~always~ ask Caligari directly first. The manual versus related forum discussions leave the issue quite unclear at the moment in my opinion.

Good idea though... hope it gets allowed.:D

Thanks for clearing that up 3dvisuals dude. I got the two names mixed up. That would be interesting to do this, especially considering this is one of the tools Caligari was touting prior to release of ts7. :)

I can recommend a set of RF (wireless) headphones and a VOIP connection like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo for training/design chat. And a channel for the umpire when you've created online tennis with full real TS physics. Wimbledon soon, I see no hairy tennis balls. Or bumble bees :)

Frootee

Sorry if the response was a little overwhelming, I was only being so clear for the sake of all the newbies here, but believe me, no one was as confused about all this stuff as I was when I first started to look into all of it, and some of it still confuses me!:o

Don't give up the effort on this idea though, it's a very good one and should be done. As you and I both recognize there is huge potential in this technology which has been discussed alot here and for a very long time. See this whole related thread from Roman a year ago, for instance:

"Let's build trueTown"

More recently (and you should definitely read all of this one) Paul Boland and I discussed some very specific issues with Roman and others which are directly related to your suggestion above in the following thread also:

"TrueSpace 7.5 and TruePlay - Create our own worlds!"

I understand that trueServe (the server-based hosting software) which is used for truePlaces is about to undergo an upward TS7.5x Compatability transition according to a recent Captain's Blog post and that will be great, but whenever it is done it won't be soon enough, especially for those of us currently planning to lease. Also, truePlay is due for a similar update some time "soon," and that too will be most welcome.

Lots of people who just got TS7.5 probably aren't aware yet for instance that truePlay1.21 can't open TS7.5 saved scenes yet at all!

See : "How to save a tS 7.5 scene to open in truePlay"

Hopefully this issue will be addressed very soon since it is a critically important issue to quite a few of us with plans to use truePlay to demo models for prospective purchasers or existing clients. As it is, we can't.:(

Good luck with pursuing this, I truly hope you succeed with it. :D

Hi Frootee,

It just ocurred to me that what you proposed in this thread may be accomplishable directly between two users of TS7+ without necessitating the use of a Shared Space server at all.

Wigland created a way to do this directly with TS7+ and posted all the related info and download files in the following thread at the forums here:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2190

I don't know if it's possible for more than two users to do this simultaneously but perhaps it is! Also Wigland posted a communications method for users to utilize during such online collaborative meetings in a thread nearby to that thread, along with related info and download files.

I know this isn't exactly what you had in mind but it still may prove to be a viable alternative with similar capabilities!
