Well, I hope I've been here long enough that I can get away with posting a new thread:o

I've had this idea brewing for a little while but wanted to time it to co-incide with the voting phase of the speed model challenge as I don't want to detract from people's efforts there (I enjoy taking part in the SMC when I can and like everyone else want to see lots of people taking part). I didn't specifically see this as a 'challenge' in the same sense as the SMC as I don't know what level of response there will be, but more of that in a mo.

The idea is fairly simple - this challenge is not so much about modelling from scratch, or about a time limit (although obviously one could be set if people thought it better) or even voting - my original idea was to take an existing 3d model of a car (I got most of mine some time back from the excellent DMI website http://dmi.chez-alice.fr/models1.html and have some fun 'modding' it, as in the TV show. People could either all work on the same model or just show their own work. I'd encourage people to discuss what they've done and how so others can learn some new tricks.

As an example, I started with a basic Honda model (cob provided below for anyone else to have a go with) and attempted to have some fun. I found working with an imported (triangulated) model a bit of a pain in all honesty (so if anyone has some tips on that it would be handy). I tweaked the bonnet/hood geometry, extended the front bumper, built an extension to the rear bumper, new side skirts and a rear spoiler; pinched some wheels off another car (a Porsche if I remember), lowered the suspension and stuck some seats in (agin from another model). And then had some fun playing with the paint job (motly just using layers and masks). I spent maybe 3-4 hours total I guess, but wasn't timing...

Someone might enjoy taking the car 'backwards' and grunging it up instead (to a 'before' condition typical on Pimp My Ride) - MadMouse would be a good candidate!

It would be great to see how people approach the following:

-Dealing with imported models and altering geometry

-Lighting set-ups

-Backdrops/environments/reflectors (I only have TS5 so no HDRI, Vray, GI etc)

-Glossy materials/shaders

etc

Screen shots would be useful...

Anyway, I hope some people are inspired to have a go - I didn't really envisage this as being a hugely competitive thing where we all tackle one car for a brief period, vote on the best, have the winner select a new car, etc although if there is enough interest that would be cool. I know there are several folks out there with car experience (WickedWitch, Vizu, etc) who could offer some valuable insight.

Anyone up for a piece of the action? NB - no Xzibit/Westwood style slang necessary...:D

I Like the idea! Can't figure out where I'm putting the Plasma yet!

I may give this a shot this week. Cool idea.

ohmygosh, someone replied! :o

Thanks Steine - I look forward to seeing what you come up with! They do have a bit of a habit of getting carried away with TV screens on the show - I remember seing them put 2" screens into the headlight clusters once... not to mention the 8" screens set into the trunk floor next to the food bowls for a couple of dogs..!
