I noticed that you got the caustics to work too. Much better. Your next speed model challange will probably blow us all away!

Just one question... Where does the red stuff come from? If it's supposed to be blood, who's bleeding... A glass figure? Or is it a stigma ;)

Try figure a chess with one white 'King of Kings' and no black royaltees at all.

Enjoy Vray :)

He's an almost invisible king and you only see his blood once he's been attacked by the pawns...:D

Acutally, I don't know. I thought it might look plain if it was just the king surrounded by pawns which was my original model. As it happens the pool of blood looks too regular to be realistic...

As for VRay, I found removing the infinite lights and one of the spotlights and putting in an omni-light of the right strength and in the right position made a huge difference to the caustics. I even tried the caustics with more photon points and it made no really difference except to render time. Also, playing with the GI settings made some, but not too much, difference as well.

I think I need to move onto something else as I can spend hours playing with this trying different settings.

Hi BrotherX,

Just catching up with this thread. Thanks for the complements guys! :)

The problem with your piece isn't the settings (I think!) so much as there's no envirionment to reflect. Three ways to acheive that:

1. Background image

2. HDRI

3. Model in some background for the objects to reflect.

1. is your fastest solution

2. will provide very cool results but will need a fair bit of tweaking settings.

3. gives you the most control but requires more work and creativity to model and texture the rest of the scene.

For simple things like this, I think HDRI may well be the way to go. It'll give a look that is much more nuanced without all the work of modeling off camera detail. (Okay I admit it, I've been converted to the HDRI darkside, LOL)

Ctrl Dbl-Click on the grey square next to the HDRI settings and then browse to you .hdr file and select it. :)

To remove the HDRI right click over the image box and choose reset.

TS comes with 2 HDRI files. I went cruising the internet to find more .hdr files. Also TS can save renders as HDR files so you can make your own as well.

This may be of interest for HDRI
