Quite nice all around!
Cell shaded image was quite a new twist I hadn't seen before. Also the winning animation was quite impressive although I couldn't scale it up in size for my poor eyes. Was curious if that one was done with flash exporter or with cell shader as well. Given the quicktime format it could be either as far I could tell. |

Thanks Steve, but not to detract from Zachary's excellent work...:D
Actually, I am suprised your entry did not do better. Technically it was excellent but maybe it was because it was more of a WIP than a finished image?? Either way, bloody good stuff. I have noticed that the winner often tends to have evocative or moody lighting....
Thanks for the runner up congrats guys, always nice to see your work up there against such talented competition. |

Technically it was excellent but maybe it was because it was more of a WIP than a finished image?? I actually submitted a whole range of images of the Devil mech including the finished render but no sign of those
I have noticed that the winner often tends to have evocative or moody lighting.... Dont get me started again Paul  ;) :D |

Congratulations to all! :D
Zacharys really look like one of thoose amazing still photos made by great photographers! Love it ! :)
The rest was also great, emotional image by Splinters, British humour by WickedWitch (:D) and the "scenes full of interesting things to look at" by Wizard ! A little bit confused about why Madmouse's complete mech wasn't choosen, but this one does show off his modelling skills ! :D |

but this one does show off his modelling skills thanks Lars. But as we all know, modelling skills are no match for moody lighting  ;) |

Lol, ya, whoever chooses the images seems to like dark scenes with volumetric lighting. Zachary's is kinda dark, Paul's is a sunset scene (somewhat dark), Stephen's "fishing spot" has volumetrics, the background is black in mine; doesn't there seem to be a bit of a pattern? Idk, good job to everyone who made this month's gallery! They all look really good, and I noticed that I recognized many of them from the forums too!

Congratulations to Zachary and Paul and everyone who made it to this month gallery!
I like the winning animation, but it seems to be under the wrong month.
By the way, have the maximum file size been changed, or is it still 15 MB?
I'm just wondering because that animation is 25 MB. |

thanks Lars. But as we all know, modelling skills are no match for moody lighting  ;)I know, I know, my judging is a subjective one:) Actualy we are thinking to introduce a new gallery contest where users would determine the winner, what do you think guys, are we going to get enough entries for both? |

What about an annual vote for best of the year based on all the monthly winners and runners up? |

I always wondered why you couldn't have one contest but have one winner selected by you and another winner selected by the users. Sometimes one winner could get both prizes. Entries for User voting would be at the Forum and Roman voting would still be submitted the old fashion way. Have a "Peoples Choice" Award and "Presidents" Award also do away with second place. I haven't figured out the best way to judge Animations yet. Maybe they could post links here to a site where their animation is located for the "Peoples Choice" Award.
I like the idea of a World Series Contest at the end of the year where ALL entries go for the Gold. " A Free trip to Caligari headquarters, a brown bag Dinner with Roman, a free box of Crayola's, (as Yul Brynner would say in the King and I ...etc, etc...) |

Lol, I think it's a great idea! I like the end of the year idea, too, as long as there's still a monthly contest! Maybe there could be one every two weeks or so.... Months just seem to go by so slowly.....

Well I'll be doing the best I can for sure!
FWIW I like Steinies suggestion of a 'Peoples Award' and a 'Presidents Award'.
Burnarts idea of an Annual best of year is a good one too - perhaps it could coincide with Caligari's birthday - or even Romans Birthday! |

Great idea; one from Roman, one from the voters.
And an annual prize as well.
I suggested to Tom some months ago that Caligari might benefit from a 'Masters' gallery like other sites do. Those Maya masters always stick in my mind-maybe tS could have the same.
Yes, we all know who they are and many have biogs or features on them but I mean a gallery of tS Masters. Take Parva for instance-posts great work but not always in the galleries. For visitors to the site, who don't like searching forums, this is a chance to see the best tS can produce.
A list would be very subjective but I think it should include include Parva, DigitalDali, Madmouse just to start with. However, it would also be the quality of the work that was on show but I think it is good to link names (with their permission) to being 'ambassadors' for Caligari and their software. Also make sure that there is a bit of everything there; character, industrial, product, architecture etc. as well as animation. |

I like the category idea Splinters had; there could be an overall winner every month, a winner for architecture, for abstract art, for nature scenes, for fictional scenes, etc. Is that what you were kinda going at Splinters? Or something similar?

wow wow wow great entries in there. I loved the winner. It must have been a tough decision between that and paul's, they are so different but both so excellent. And that animation winner, wow wow wow again. I had no idea truespace could do that! That is some pro looking work right there. Where is the toon shader? I don't see it anywhere. I'd love to try it out. |

Oh and I want to point out, if you use .mov, you can use quicktime pro which is only 30 dollars, to export a movie using the H.264 codec. I tried this on the winning animation and got the file size down to 6 mb and it looked the same and still had sound. 25 mb is just way to big for that animation.
But I am just blown away by that animation. I showed it to a friend and he thinks the characters were hand drawn and the rest was toon shaded. Is this how it was done? |

For animators out there, one word of warning - .mov (the Quicktime format) is still not fully compatible with Vista.
They did release an update that fixes it for some, but no .mov will play still on my system, and others report the same thing. So for now, if you do post your animations in .mov format, there will be some people out there who are not able to view them....
HTH!

I have .mov files on my Vista desktop that work fine.... They had sound problems at first, but now they're fine. I don't know why they wouldn't work on some Vista computers...
