If you create a few characters and applied hair function to them, the system will not be able to handle it.

Hair functions is memroy hungry beast. My systme is xp pro, 4gb main memory, just 4-5 characters with hair will cause system crash. The only application on the system is TS7.51.

I do hope Caligari can improve the function in the very near future. Or this new function is of no use at all.

Roman : it is not good enough to mention in the manual that Hair requires a lot of memory. Because Hair not only requires a lot of memory, it requires memory that the system cannot provide. Please improve the function.

Actually, I've heard that XP really only handles 2 GB of memory efficiently by default (can be tweaked to use 3 I think).

Kinda academic though since whatever you have apparently isn't enough and you're not likely to get a whole lot more with XP.

I'm curious, are you displaying hair in workspace only or model side? I don't think the model side can handle so many polygons since it is based on legacy code. Also, do you have link editor open at the time or just the main window?

Not sure if this will affect the memory usage but I think you can dial back the percentage of displayed hair in the workspace while allowing it to be rendered at full resolution in Vray. Doesn't help much in case of lightworks since that must be initiated from the model side.

My system is only 2 gigs and I'm not having major problems. Hair is a memory hog in all applications. I also agree the code could be improved. While their at it maybe add more features too...:)

I agree with Steinie about the more features!! :D We need a haircut tool because it's a little too hard to use the length brush without either going really slow or making someone completely bald in one click!

I run Vista with 2 GB, and I do have some problems with it, even though I've never added hair to more than one figure at a time.

It could also be your graphics card giving you the trouble, but I'm not sure; I'm not an expert in graphics cards (I wish I was though....).

I find problems in both the Workspace and the Model tabs. Whatever you do, DON'T ADD HAIR TO A GLUED OBJECT!! You get all kinds of crazy stuff when I do that, but I just unglue the head, or whatever single object I want hair on and then add hair to it. In model, it's just plain slow, and it sometimes does this: http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/ImagesGallery/2007/jun/image.asp?Cate=GImages&img=3160&email=&name=Ty%20Whitcomb, where the hair gets magically thicker. It could help you or kill you (in this case it helped me get an honerable mention)!

The thing I like doing on the model side with hair is adding a different texture to the hair because you don't have as much freedom to do that on the workspace side (or maybe you do and I just haven't figured it out yet). I textured the hair in the link above with a marble texture on the Model side, so I do agree that it would be helpful if the hair tool was improved so that it doesn't slow everything down so much!

Whew, lot of typing to make one point....

The only thing I can really suggest other than a graphics card is that you apply the hair after you've done everything else you want to do in the scene.

HTH!!!!

If I remember, the memory use restriction only applies to 32bit versions of windows and the limit is 3gb for xp and it may be 4gb for vista and the only sure way of taking advantage is to run 64-bit versions of windows....

can't comment on the hair really except I made a sphere, put hair on it and the machine virtually ground to a stop....machine sucks tho so there you have it...

Looking at your signature, it sure doesn't look like your machine sucks! Mine's worse than that!

Yeah, that's my home PC....it is a little slow...:D

But i don't use it so much for modelling - I do most of it in the office which is a dual core but it's the slowest model with crappy onboard video....I tried to convince them I need an 8800 but they just won't buy it :)
