here's another animation test. I think he'd look cool doing this in a dojo!
I'll see if I can do that. I need to work on my modelling skills anyway!

Not bad Frootee!
As he flips over though, his chin should get tucked into his chest...that would make the movement seem a little more natural.

Thanks Forcemaster. I knew there was something missing (actually, A Lot) but I couldn't think of what those things were. I will work on the neck tuck.
I plan to integrate this clip with a couple others: specifically, with the one where bananaman pops him:
First, CrazyBob tries showing off his newfound martial arts skills by doing a backflip, then bananaman pops him, and he falls to the floor. Then Bananaman does his victory jump.

Hey Frootee
Nice Start. Just a few observations.
First off the flip is way too slow. There is no way anyone could do a flip that slowly. Try speeding it up at least double the speed and see how it looks. His squat down at the beginning looks fine, then he should should spring up quickly and go fluidly into the flip. Try to find some flip videos on the web and check them out. There is just something that doesnt flow right and I am not very good at critiquing. Oh, and I think you need more follow through with the feet. So when he is springing in the air his foot is pointing down. You may need to adjust the joint limits.
Keep up the good work! |

Well, I could not get Premiere installed on XP last night. 6.5 is kinda old, so I downloaded and installed Virtualdub. I made the changes recommended by FM2k and 3dfrog. Let me know what you think.
I got tired of screwing around with animating in modelview and having all kinds of stupid jerking for no good reason in the video, so I just rendered from workspace to file.

Looking much better frootee. Just gotta fix that feet slipping now. Takes a little tweaking. One other thing I think might look more natural is if he takes a little longer to have his knees fully up after he takes off from the gound, maybe all the way up half way through the jump. It seems now he goes from knees bent on the ground to knees bent in the air too quickly and it looks repetitive. That's just me though,I could be wrong.
Looks great man!
To fix that foot slip you may just need to change the interpolation to linear in the f curve editor. Select the foot ik handles, go to the keys that are before and after the slip in the f curve editor, right click and choose linear interpolation. |

Groovy. Thanks for the input 3dfrog! I really do appreciate the critiques and tips. I am learning a lot and having a lot of fun with this.
I will put those changes in tonight.
Another thing I don't like is, he looks like he stands up, then starts a backwards rotation. He needs an impulse for a jump instead.
Does anyone know how to get Adobe premiere installed and working with Windows XP? Apparently I have not used it since I installed XP, and would hate to see it go to waste.
Thanks!

Hey Frootee. I think I posted this link once before but I will post it again because its so good. Since you are interested in doing animation, Keith Lango's video training series is great for beginners and pros. They are the best deal out there for the price. You can pick and choose back issues of what you want to learn or you can subscribe and keep updated and recieve discounts on back issues. If you are a subscriber you get access to the forums too where you will get great feedback. I am a little intimidated to post there yet because the people there are so good. I only posted one walk cycle there so far.
btw, I am not affiliated with Keith Lango, I just like his service. Don't mean to highjack your thread, just thought you might like this:

Oh yeah! Thanks 3dFrog! I don't think that's hijacking... that's helping! I bookmarked his site before but hopefully others viewing this thread have a fresh opportunity to check out that site. I looked at the site; I like it! I'd like to join.

Hey folks.
3dfrog:
I did set the keyframes to linear interpolation at the beginning of the animation (Frames 0 and 15) but, even so, the feet still slide (translate) on the y axis, about 0.2 units or so.
Long story short, I think he needs a positional lock on both foot IK Handles. Each IK handle needs to have Firm IK handle set. Possibly also Animate as Soft. The Firm IK Handle should allow his feet to break free, since the foot IK Handles have a higher 'priority' than the lock when Firm IK Handle is set.
Another interesting thing of note: Although there are several IK handles which are animated, I see only one entry in the Animation Editor. I would expect to see something like:
IK Handle
IK Handle,1
IK Handle,2
etc.
But I don't.
I was going to post the RsScn file but when I emailed it to my work email the email never showed up. I'll do that later, so we can all learn from it.

well I can't seem to get rid of that tiny slip. Maybe someone could take a look at this and see what the problem is? If not at least you can play with the scene.

Okay actually I take that back.
I took the shotgun approach and at frame 0, selected the entire model, and set all the translation keyframes at frame 0 to Linear Interpolation.
I thought the feet were sliding so setting the feet IK to linear Interp would help;
apparently the whole model was sliding. Problem solved (I think).
Here's the file for comparison: jump5. |

Wow!
This latest scene (backjump5) is really smooth, I'm thinking it would look especially cool to see this move at the end of a high diving board at a swimming pool! (I used to actually do a similar dive once!) :D
You're definitely getting better at all this stuff Frootee, well done!

this mesh blows up when I add two clips, and set them to additive mode.
Any reason why?
Thanks,
