Hi folks,

To my surprise the other day I discovered that among my many 2D Image editing programs was hiding an old version of a plugin which came with Corel Photopaint, and sure enough, it makes very cool seamless kaliedoscopic versions and variations of any image you care to feed it!

I decided to make "a few" (ended up being over 350!) seamless textures specifically for us all to use in our trueSpace Virtual Reality-type structures... you know, the ones you can walk through with the FPN (First Person Navigation) feature of trueSpace7.xx, or someday soon (hopefully) be able to upload to your own rented space on a Caligari server for all of us to join you in!;)

Anyhow, here's an image utilizing 2 of these textures followed by 3 Zipped Files containing 355 New Seamless Textures as a gift from me to you.

Feel free to use them for whatever you like, and Enjoy! :D

Hey 3dv. Nice! Thanks man.

I wonder how much it will cost to rent server space.

Hmmm, I have some PhotoPaint versions. What is the plug-in? Which version of PhotoPaint? Did it come with PhotoPaint, or did you get it seperately?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Thanks Frootee,

Yeah, I wonder too. Roman stated in a response post specifically regarding the upcoming rentable spaces that "it will be affordable," and that's good enough for me. Having this capability there are lots of folk here at the forum who would get involved with it and it would be awesome to link up our custom creations to each other there so we could travel around in these places with truePlay together! :D

Hi Jeff.

Corel Photopaint 9. The plugin installs from the Corel CD on installation of Corel and is in the Photopaint "Effects" dropdown under "Fancy" and is called "Terrazzo." Be sure that your plugins folder in your Photopaint settings points to the Corel install path or it won't find Terrazzo when Photopaint starts up.

I think it's available for around $65.00 seperately also, perhaps more now.

Thank you very much 3d visuals dude !

They can come very handy one day ...

If you want to see some new plugins

http://www.shaman-journey.dk/backgroundmaniac_filter/index.html

Those can be combined to make unlimited fabric .... wallpapers

quilts etc.

Plus you can combine then with the Kaleidoscope filter

from Paintshop Pro 9 (that came with my Lexar pro card )

to make tiles.

There are a lot of these filters for photoshop in "The plugin site "

Best regards and thank you and nice to hear from you again

Peter

Corel used to also include a very handy stand-alone utility called Corel PhotoTexture in the CorelDraw collection, if I'm not mistaken (but this goes back at least a few versions, as I haven't updated my Corel stuff in a long time).

rj

P.S. Lest I forget, many thanks, 3DVisuals Dude for the texture collections!

Thanks Peter, you're very welcome.

Yeah, I know about The Plugin Site, I have over 3000 photoshop filters with nearly 1000 actively plugged in. I've been collecting them for years and pretty much know every one that's available free or cheap.;)

I also checked out the link to that German plugin, thanks.

This particular "Terrazzo" plugin which I used for the textures in this thread is extremely powerful as far as photoshop plugins tend to go. It has many excellent tools within it for various effects, and each tool can additionally be moved around in a realtime preview screen to see what it will do as well as the fact that each tool can be scaled and some can be rotated in that viewport as well. The great thing is the user-controlled built-in feathering though, since it is very good but also very subtle in it's effect. This toolset beats any other seamless texture maker I have ever used hands down (assuming you are trying to make entirely new textures with it), and is worth getting an old version of CorelDRAW9/PhotoPaint9 just to have this incredible tool alone. Old versions of CorelDRAW9 (with Terrazzo) can be had on eBay now for about $50 or less, and this is "a must-have" utility for seamless textures in 3D modeling work.

Glad you like the textures zips above. They actually have some excellent textures in them for virtual structure use, and I already filtered out many of the "bow wow textures" from the collection prior to zipping these 3 zips.

Some of these textures should be scaled down and saved at a 10 percent compression as new JPG files prior to actual use online, of course, but they are pretty good as is for offline work for the most part.

Enjoy!

Hi Rj0,

Yeah I have that PhotoTexture thing too, although I really never got much use out of it. One day I found a link online to DeepPaint Standalone (the 2D Version) FREE and although it is an absolutely HUGE download it does some really amazing layering/channel work with multi-layered textures and blows away the Corel texture utility, so as soon as I had that I dropped the Corel Texture utility like a stone.

I don't have the link handy at the moment but I'm pretty sure you can still get the Deep Paint standalone texture maker as a free (but HUGE) download, and if you don't have it yet I definitely recommend getting it while you still can for free!

Enjoy the textures, and feel free to modify them if you like as well... I'm putting them in the Public Domain here, so they're yours now! :D

To everyone...

About using these textures to create your own DX9 textures for realtime use (and Vray rendering) in trueSpace 7.xx.

I suppose most of you already know this but just in case anyone doesn't...

If you take an object in Workspace and drag a texture over to it from the DX9 shaders that came with TS7.5x, you can then go into the Link Editor and drill down (by clicking the orange squares) inside that object until you come to the "material" section for that object inside the "material chunk". Clicking the titlebar for that material will then provide you with the modifiable aspects of that material, where you can then Ctrl-click the existing images used in that texture and replace them with any of the ones I provided here for download.

Remember also to play with the two "scale" aspects of each material image since these are all tileable seamless textures and were never intended to be used in a 1-to-1 scale aspect on any objects, most start to look good only at a 4-to-1 aspect (ie: x scale of 4.000 and y scale of 4.000 as opposed to the default settings of 1.000 and 1.000 respectively), and in the case of long walls or large floors you may want to set the aspect to 20.000 and 20.000. It should also be noted that most of the textures I provided here are not square, so these scale aspects will need to be played with accordingly when you use these images as substitutes for existing material "diffuse," "normal," and "displacement" image entries. When you have a "diffuse" scale setting that looks good, just replicate those same x and y scale numbers for the "diffuse texture" in your subsequent "normal" or "displacement map" image entries as well.

If you start this procedure by dragging the Metal Bump sample in the DX9 stack, for instance, you can then use the method above to change the material images used for that sample by replacing the "diffuse texture" image and the "normal" image.

You can also (assuming you have enough polys in the model you are using) add a "displacement map" to the object with one of the textures I provided above as a normal displacement image. If you don't have enough polys to effectively use the displacement mapping you can either right-click on the mesh and then subdivide the polys or add subdivision layers to the object prior to selecting the "displacement map" option. Remember also to use identical "scale" aspects for the displacement map as you used for the "diffuse texture" of that material.

Needless to say, once you modify a DX9 or Vray texture and like the result you should add that texture to the appropriate library in your stack by using "insert as:" and choosing the right texture format for that particular library entry. Keep in mind also that if you did use displacement mapping you should save the actual object in your object library to retain that displacement mapping.

Many DX9 textures work OK in Vray, but some look entirely different in Vray than in realtime Workspace. If you know for sure you are going to be rendering with Vray it would be best of course to modify an existing Vray texture for this purpose rather than to use a DX9 texture as a starting point.

Hope that helps,

It occurred to me that some of you might like to get a glimpse of what one of these textures looks like right out of the zipfile before it's applied to any object, so I put a sample image together to give you an idea of that. :)

This one's right out of the zipfile as is and I just tossed it into Paint Shop Pro for this quick sample render. Not all these textures are the same shape or size at all, but most are this shape and this is one of the largest of the bunch. (The texture that is... not my little assistant here! ;) )

My pleasure Peter, hope you find some use for them sometime soon.

Along those lines, by the way, you may want to have a peek at Roman's latest Captains Blog entry here regarding the upcoming changes for the better with truePlay, Avatars, and private shared space. Interesting developments and eagerly awaited by me for sure. :D

Maybe we'll be using these textures sooner than I thought after all!;)

PS: Regarding Monsoons... we get hit very hard by monsoon season here in Arizona as well, it lasts here from TODAY until mid-September, and is known here for hellatious lightning storms, blinding dust storms, hail ranging in size from dice to softballs, and the usual pre-storm heat buildup in the 110-126 degree farenheit range. Lots of fun, you should come visit! :D

Thanks,

Thanks Rich, my pleasure.

I knew I had this "Terrazzo" plugin somewhere because I had used it once about a year and a half ago but I couldn't remember the name of it and lost track of where it was among my thousands of plugins and half a dozen plugin host programs! Sure was nice finding it again, and it's really a blast to play with for this kind of stuff.:D

I'll make more in a few weeks no doubt, but these should keep folks busy for a while in the meantime!;)

If you have any specific images where you have fairly high contrast color combinations and/or geometric lines or patterns somewhere in the image already, those kinds of images work very well with this plugin toolset. If there's a particular image you have that fits that description and you happen to love the color combinations in it let me know via PM and I'll give you my direct e-mail to send it to me and then I'll send you back a zip with a few seamless textures made from it. I love doing this stuff, it's a great distraction and I'm always looking for good distractions!;)

Enjoy,

Hi again folks,

I was thinking earlier tonight that some of you folks may not have a great seamless texture tiling viewer like I use, and since the one I prefer to use is freeware for personal and non-commercial use (like this) I figured I'd pass along the info and download link so you can use it to quickly view all these (355) "Sweet VR Textures" that I made here for you.

I've tried out a lot of these tiling programs over the years and like this one the best for all it's great features, it's called "AMP Tile Viewer 2.01" and it's from AMPsoft ( http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/TileViewer.php ).

It's freeware and great, so if you don't have it... have at it! ;)

By the way, for those of you who only downloaded the FIRST Zip File of the THREE Zip Files of "Sweet VR Seamless Textures" I posted earlier in this thread (and there are lots of you out there! Hahaha!) you won't be seeing this texture above or the one above that either in your new collections, since they're in the Zip Files you didn't download yet! :D

Some of the best are in the LAST two zips, but suit yourselves! Hahahaha!

Hahahahaha!!!

Yeah, I tried getting that job once but they took one look at me, handed me a pail and a trowell, and said "there's the elephant kid, go follow it around for a few weeks and then we'll talk."

Seems I've been following elephants most of my life since then... even here!:D
