Thanks for posting your ideas with SSS. I'll take a look at your settings and see if I can improve on my own results. I'm also looking at lightworks rendering at the moment, as it my offer more options in terms of shading, and the HDRI rendering gives pretty decent results.

Someone asked to see a mesh a swhile back. Sorry for the delay.

Here's the latest. I've used a single level of SDS on this for my renders thus far.

Nice flow lines on your mesh :-) This head looks like it would animate nicely.

I'm sure the quad police would be upset about the tris around the mouth and n-gons on the neck, chin, and forehead that you used to terminate a few loops, but I've never really seen trueSpace have any trouble Subdividing those. For me it always seemed to have more problems with creasing poles....

Sometime I feel when I'm quadifying a mesh that I'm adding a lot of unneccessary geometry that may or may not have defined the shape as well as the original tri/n-gon geometry. I'm currious as to your thoughts on quads?

Anycase great work and thanks for showing the wires!

BTW are you using SubD player side or modeler side?

-Jack.

I tend to use quads as much as possible, but, as you say, sometimes it makes no sense. Occasionally tris cause problems, but not if you're careful about placement.

I managed to get the head into the facial animator, and give her a slight smile, but any excessive movement created some distortion. I did a bit of remodelling, after using the animator, but it saved me a lot of time and effort. If I was doing this again, I'd make sure my model was simpler before trying to change the expression, and then up the detail.

I've done all the modelling in 6.6, as I was fedup with the slow update of the undo feature in 7.1. I intned to start modelling more in the player, in the near future.

Here's the result of a Lightworks render. HDRI as the only light source. Seems to give a bit more depth to the shadows.

Nice job Chris, hair is great, and the model is as well. Looks like she is starting to well up a bit though, maybe she found out I'm taken ;)

Something about the skin texture that isn't very convincing yet, maybe it's too perfect, maybe some color variation would help.

Cheers,
Dave

watched a movie with Charlize the other night and thought about this thread the whole time....I think you captured her very well indeed. The last image posted is not quite as accurate as the previous few, did you 'fatten' her up?.

Thanks for the kind words folks. Once again, I can't take credit for the hair, as I improrted a poser object, and adjusted it slightly to suit. I found it hard to get good enough textures for my own attempts at hair. Maybe I should raid a hair dressers and pick up some offcuts.

Need to do something about the reflectivity of the eyes, as she does look a bit overly emotional.

Just a consequence of the changes that have to be made for different render engines.

The last image is an identical model to the previous 2, but the camera perspective was different, which makes her look slightly different. I noticed that I had to match the camera settings to my reference photos. Good bit of advice here to anyone modelling from photos, make sure your viewport has the perspective is reduced by zooming in, and then moving the camera back. I should post a few examples of the difference this can make.

If the vray hair in ts7.5 is half as good as this I'll be happy.

Even though you got the hair from poser, it's good to see that this kind of result is possible (and that transfer between poser and tS works). :D

Also like the idea of hair-theft ;)

Your camera tip sounds like what I've read in photography books, zooming instead of moving closer with the camera. More flattering and less facial distortions. (something that explained why all of my portrait photos looked...well, less good ;) )

And, Congrats on the BestOfForum !

I have to agree. That last pic made her look like she'd been using some dodgy fake-tan lotion.

Just a quick update. Not much changed. Finding a problem with some rendering attributes with lightworks. Could be transparent shadows and HDRI issue. I need to investigate further.

Dang she looks hot! You are a remarkably talented and patient artist IMHO. She is outstanding. In a world saturated with endless plasticly perfect poser babes it's great to see someone model a real human being.

Id still like to see a few more subtle skin blemishes to add that nth degree of realism but she's stunning as she is. Well done Chris.

Always good to get feedback from one of my biggest fans Wizard.

I don't produce that much material, but what I do, I hope is as detailed as I can get it. Sometimes I feel the texture needs more variation, then again I sometimes think of leaving her pale and interesting, as if she'd spent a winter in Scotland.

Ha - is that wishful thinking, perhaps?! :D

Absolutely amazing work - this really showcases truespace's abilities, I certainly didn't know it was capable of this (mind you, I'm still on an older version).

Simply awesome. Hope when you're done you're going to submit for the monthly Gallery competition...

Wishful thinking indeed Nez.

Don't worry about being on an older version of trueSpace. I modelled this in 6.6, and could easily have modelled it in 5.1, as I just used basic box modelling with one level of SDS. The main factor is perseverence, and I like to think an eye for detail. The last image was rendered with Lightworks, albeit with HDRI, but I've managed pretty decent result rendering this with IBL as well, at each stage of modelling. I may just post such an image.

Here's an IBL render in Lightworks. Very basic hemisphere sky texture, with default settings. Took a lot longer than with the HDRI. No additional light sources.

Looks pretty similar, just less detail to be reflected in the eyes. SHows that you don't always need vray and HDRI.

Hi Chris, this looks great, I like the HDRI version the best, the eyes are awesome, same with the hair, the skin could use a few hightlights.

WOW the HDRI render is just stunning Chris. If you or Graysho don't win the monthlys with your latest pieces then I give up and I'll take up finger painting instead. ;)

I too think the skin needs highlights, now it looks like you have to dig through makeup to find some skin ;). It really looks like perfect makeup, but I'd prefer to see some skin  , would make it perfect.
