Anyone have any ideas about how to address the copyright issues? Is there any way to 'lock' scenes?

Well, as W!ZARD stated in post#22 above, it is an important consideration for us all in this type of design work.

There is a thread currently raising that issue here at the forums also ( http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2199 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2199) ) in relation to a potential upcoming web browser plugin version of truePlay2.0. Roman dropped into that thread to indicate that a web browser plugin for truePlay2.0 will be looked into and may be possible, but so far Caligari has not directly addressed the specific issue of scene security discussed both here and there.

They may well be looking into it, and I wouldn't be surprised at all, but it's something that will sooner or later become an issue I'm confident Caligari will address as more of us become involved in efforts such as the one you have proposed here.

Lots of people here are thinking about this competition apparently, so hang in there, spread the word on it, and I'm sure it will become a great success.:)

To be honest i never thought of this as anything but informal, maybe entrants posting their scene and some screengrabs so people can downlaod it and have a look, but then that would limit it to people with 7+ :(

If anyone from caligari could comment on this it'd be a big help at this point.

Hi Jayr,

Somehow I missed what you said earlier here and it's important so I thought I should address it for the sake of everybody reading this thread...

When you said above "but then that would limit it to people with 7+" that's not accurate actually...

Everybody who downloads the free Caligari truePlay 1.3 program (and they don't even have to be Caligari customers at all) will be able to explore the scenes created in this competition once they are saved to their own harddrives or saved to CD's.

They will be able to interact with these scenes while being actually inside them themselves walking or flying around, clicking any existing scripted objects and links in there with total interactivity, and also be able to fully interact with any physics-oriented simulations present in those scenes, as well as physical animations.

Everybody will be able to enjoy these scenes firsthand in truePlay1.3, but those of us with the further advantage of also having trueSpace7.xx will be able to go inside the link editor in relation to those scenes as well... seeing "what's going on under the hood" as W!ZARD aptly put it, which is a fantastic way to learn how to develop our own scenes with genuinely immersive and fully interactive aspects able to take our creations to the next level and beyond.:D

I realize you probably know this already now, I just wanted to make sure it didn't remain a potential misunderstanding for others reading this thread who might refrain from joining your effort because they don't have TS7.xx.

@ Jayr, Jack, Frootee, W!ZARD, Rich, Nez, Theuns, and anyone else interested in getting this concept off the ground...

What does everybody want or need on this to get this Competition rolling?

As you already know I think it would be great for the Community here, but I also think it would be great for each of us personally as well, so I'm asking.

i'm willing to get started, how about this for a few ground rules:

1: Must be under 6megs when finished (being finished counts as ready for viewing in trueplay/ as if it was online, not the file size before it's converted if you don't have 7+)

2:The room you create can be for any purpose but you must state what you are trying to achive i.e. an online gallery or meeting place.

3: You must include screenshots of your space in your entry post along with the final scene

4: A four week deadline ending monday 3rd of september at midnight.

Is that ok for everyone? Hopefully we can get it started in the next few days, and start a new thread for the results

Excellent Jayr!

On #1 above there may be folks creating scenes intended only for offline use with truePlay on a CD or hard drive though, and in those cases the total filesize could be huge and still be fine in truePlay. Maybe 20 meg? Scenes intended for online use at some point though should remain under 6 meg as you suggested for sure.

On # 3 above I think you meant to say "entry thread."

This will be a lot of fun for everybody Jayr, thanks for making it happen.:)

i was thinking of sticking to a format people were familiar with, having one thread where everyone could post the end result like with the speed model challange. It'd make it easier to judge if all the entries were in the one place and people didn't have to go hunting for them

However as this is going to be a long comp i think people will want to start their own threads to chart their progress as well. This is fine as long as the end result goes in the competition thread

Hi Jayr,

Sorry, my misunderstanding. I've never entered any of the speedmodeling competitions or followed any so I'm not familiar yet with that process. I have visited their truePlace Gallery though and jumped over their railing there a few times, and that was fun at least.:D

On scene sizes, given that a few of you guys here are concerned about your scene-related texture sizes being too large for online use, the issue of how large of a scene is allowed for those scenes which are intended for offline use is probably important for you all to decide on together first. If the scenes you're making are intended for truePlay exploration via CD or harddrive there's really no need to restrict them to the standard "truePlaces" 5-6 Meg limit at all.

You can actually make far more elaborate scenes for offline use if you want to, or at least not have to worry about file size limitations related to multi-user online bandwidth issues.

This is a cool thing you guys are doing here with this, it'll be very inspiring for folks who would like to try it but are not sure where to begin with it all.

A great initiative.:)
