Update:
and physics weight (for TS7.xx users) 80.00
IMPORTANT NOTE: The real Avatars in truePlay sort of "hover" above the floor, and as such do not trip easily.
On Max Step Heights and Max Ramp Angles it's like this:
30 degree max stable angle

Funny you should say this....:D
Hi Rayman,
The other day we had an enormous breakthrough in immersive and interactive scene development in the "accessing avatar matrices" thread here at the forums. We've developed a new way now to have a script, which may be activated by proximity sensor (involuntarily) or button click (voluntarily) in a scene take control of an Avatar's position in 3D Space temporarily. This has already led to the development of several very cool new features for our interactive and immersive scenes such as Teleporters, Transporters, and Elevators.:)
With this new capability we will now be able to have an Avatar (seem to) lock on to anything (although in reality the opposite is true) such as Skateboards, Surfboards, Water Skiis, Snow Skiis, Monorail Seats, RollerCoaster Seats.... the list is endless!:D
When you get a chance try a few of the new scripts showing up now daily in the Garage area of the forum here, some a still "beta versions" as we work out minor issues but some are already full-fledged working immersiveness tools. Great stuff!:)
I've been a tad distracted accordingly as you probably noticed lately, but I still want to pursue that project which you and I had discussed a while back soon as well.;)
Great times these!

3dvisuals dude:
speaking of steps/slopes etc, I wonder if you could try out the attached to see whether it works as an 'immersive environment' or not...
should be self explanatory, if you can open it (saved as a TS5 scn file).
If so, I could maybe twak it a bit more to polish it up for entry...
I've got another idea, but don't know if I'll have time to work on it yet..
Cheers! |

Sure Nez, my pleasure!:)
I'll have a go at it a little later today (a busy day already) and reply here with what I discover on it or can suggest. This will be fun, thanks!
Glad to see you taking the plunge Nez!
Welcome aboard, the more the merrier!:)

AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Sorry Nez... I had to let that out.... now, where was I....
Well I took one look at this thing and I said to myself, "Self, get your cone up there and try this out right now for yourself!"
So I took your file and played ON it a tad (QUITE a tad:D )!
Here's a VERY ROUGH DRAFT of just how much fun this will be to finish for the competition, it is already in truePlay usable form. Just Use truePlay1.3 and it's dropdown menu entries for "File" and "Load" and point to it on your own hard drive.
If you can shave a few polys off here and there it may speed up the whole scene enough for online use too, but at the moment it works great offline via truePlay and weighs in at around 6.25 meg as an RsScn file already, which means when it is final and ready for conversion we can make that size even smaller by saving it to a TS7.51 Rcd format file instead, and that WILL be faster too!:)
As you progress with this scene in the competition, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask these guys or me in your own new entry thread, we're all in this together and you're off to a great start here already!
Here's the truePlay1.3-Ready ~VERY ROUGH DRAFT~ so you too can slide on it today!!!!:D
Thanks and good luck, that was fun!!!

Sure Theuns.
You can post it here if you want or use my private e-mail, your choice, only whichever you decide be sure to compress the file as much as you can with a Zip or Tar Compression utility first of course.
If you post it here I think there's a 10 meg limit on Zip files here which is nice, and it may be higher than my ISP e-mail limit, I'm not sure.
If you do send it via e-mail, hopefully my ISP won't have difficulty with the filesize of the attachment, but you do have my mail address so you could try that and we'll see!
I'm ready when you are!

Cool!
I'm not absolutely certain on that 10 meg Zip file limit here at the forums either, it may be even larger, I just don't recall.
If what you have zips out too large (which is not too likely based on the polycounts you mentioned previously) let me know here and we'll figure out some other way to get it done.
In the meantime I'll be hanging around here anyway, I have trueSpace and truePlay opened also to while away the time but I'll refresh the forums here once in a while to see how you're coming along with this.

Whatever you like Theuns, your choice!
Looks like Frootee is already submitting different versions or different entries before deadline so I guess that's no problem, besides we're all here to learn and share in the experience anyway, and maybe if you post it early somebody here with some scripting capability may pitch in to help you make it a lot more interactive before deadline!

well one prob I have is the file is 15 MB when un-rar'd.
I was not sure if I could get the tricks in there before the deadline, hence the multiple releases.

You saved it as an "RsScn" file... remember treuBlue's suggestion on "RsRcd" format for making smaller files? It will be a lot smaller and work perfectly!
Here's the link on the method:
http://http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=43727&postcount=50 (http://http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=43727&postcount=50)
That's probably all you need to do if you want it online, but even the way it is now it works great here in truePlay even in my ANCIENT and VERY S-L-O-W Computer offline, which is great!:)

LOL - great ride Nez and 3DVD. One comment though Mark - I found the Entry Point was set a little low and so I came out slightly below floor level - a spacebar jump soon solved that but things were jiggling around in a most perturbing manner beforehand. |

LOL
Yeah, that was a pretty poor job I did on that, I was in such a rush to get a bunch of other stuff done that day and along comes Nez with this way cool item to translate! I was planning to do it later that day but decided it was just too much fun to make Nez wait for so I kind of slapped that together way too fast!
The entrypoint camera wasn't placed well, the checkerboard floor is visible, the lighting was hasty, the objects actually descend below ground level slightly causing visible flashing of coincindent ground faces at some points... all in all it was actually pretty bad! LOL I think I heard someone yell "VERY ROUGH DRAFT" on that... I dunno.;)
Hopefully Nez knows I'd be doing a far better job on an actual final translation, which I certainly plan to for all the translations. Then again, I haven't heard from Nez here since that day... so maybe he fled in horror!
Oh well... I try.:o
Anyhow I never did see a related WIP post from Nez on that either. Hopefully he'll do that, his scene is very nice and a lot of fun to climb and slide on.:D
Also if Nez or anyone else would prefer, Jayr did also volunteer to do these translations.

Haha - no I haven't fled in horror - we've just a 'bank holiday' weekend here in the UK (public holiday) so I've been away from the computer and internet since Friday and unable to check back in till this morning. As I don't even have a copy of Trueplay as yet, I haven't had a chance to check out how you got on, but I'm glad you've has dome fun!
I didn't post a WIP or anything as frankly, I knocked the scene up in my lunchbreak, posted it straight off for you tinker with, worked for the afternoon and went home for my weekend - rather than waste a bunch of time talking about it, I wanted to get it online for you in case you might have some time to tinker with it!
Basically, not having Trueplay or similar to try out with I was hoping you'd be able to check with the setps were suitable to be climbed - i.e. not too steel - and the slide steep enough (and wide enough) not too hang up on the way down. Was going to try a spiral ramp but was worried it would be too shallow.
Not sure I'll be able to download trueplay here to try it out (nasty system admins...!) but I'll have a go. Not sure whether I'll be able to shave much off in the way of polys - kept most of it as basic as possible, except the slide itself.
So a big thanks for the effort - I'll have a look if I get a chance, but I'm going to be murderously busy this week - so I may just submit it as it is otherwise.... |

Wow... you whipped that up on a lunchbreak?!?!?!!!
Amazing.
That really is a perfectly done set of stairs and correctly angled slide, very nice modeling indeed. I am seriously impressed.
Well, whenever you want a better version of that for truePlay just zip some textures along with an image indicating where they should be applied and I should be able to do a much better trueplay version conversion for you at that point. Just let me know.
...and thanks for not "fleeing in horror!":D

Hey folks... we're almost up on deadline here so I wanted to toss this idea in here and see what you guys think about it...
Would you guys like to extend this competition deadline by another two weeks?
There are several pretty good reasons I'm asking:
1) I know for a fact there are some of you who have entered who wish you had more time before deadline to really spice-up your entries.
2) I know that one of the Contest Format Conversion Guys (me!:o ) working on Theuns' Cliff Colony entry will very likely not have that entry ready for deadline (thousands of parts involved - much texture work to do let alone introducing any new scene interactivity), but that entry WILL be very cool indeed whenever it is ready for all of us to explore in truePlay.
3) I know Délé mentioned he is working on something special he was hoping to have ready by deadline, so an extension may help him develop that for your contest as well.
4) I know Jayr mentioned hoping for texture conversion time before deadline.
5) I know Nez mentioned he had something additional to add to his entry but thought it might not be do-able before deadline.
6) I seem to recall Frootee mentioning something additional he wanted to do with his arena which hasn't been done yet to my knowledge.
7) ALL you guys started on this kind of late... like two weeks into the challenge, so it seems reasonable to me that 2 weeks extended deadline would make up for that for each of you now that you are all off and running with your entries.
8) I could be wrong, but I think the actual competition aspect of all this new immersive scene development work by each of you guys is less important to each of you than having fun with this and sharing related development methods, especially new interactivity methods, and a two week deadline extension would certainly give you guys loads of time for more scene development and related collaboration.
9) Since I'm not a contestant here it makes it easier to suggest this!:)
So what do you each think about the idea...
Would you guys like to extend this competition deadline by another two weeks?

Sounds good to me. It's not looking like my little project will be done by then. I only started it about 5 or 6 days ago. The competition part of it isn't important to me so I was just going to share it when I got it done. Still, if it will get more people submitting scenes, I'm all for another two weeks. |

Well I don't mind it being extended; I didn't really have anything to add to mine as it stands, although I could do a minor amount of tidying up.
I had an idea for an alternative (wasn't sure the first idea would actually work), but hadn't even started that.
I was late starting as I was away on holiday, but it was knocked up in a bit of a hurry; I'm still unable to actually install Trueplace so I can't even see what you've been able to do in terms of interactivity...
It would be nice to see some screenshots of it in action....
(NB - materials - only planned to use plain shaders on this scene anyway, doesn't really need much in way of textures)
Can someone answer a little trueplace question - does trueplace support any form of mirrored materials - i.e. can you see reflections of your avatar? Just thinking.... |

Well if Jayr would like to extend this too I believe that will make it unanimous at this point and that should give you loads of time to develop additional scene elements if you like, especially for someone capable of making a model as complex as your initial entry here during a lunchbreak!:)

I assume the truePlay1.3 install "inability" you are having is merely one of not having been able to allocate the time to install it, because if one has uninstalled previous versions of truePlay there have been no known install issues pertaining to truePlay1.3 at all which I am aware of to date.
As far as what I/we have been "able to do in terms of interactivity" to that particular scene the answer is "nothing so far," because unless I'm mistaken you haven't yet told us you wanted such features or what exactly they may be! If Jayr wishes to extend the deadline and you plan to develop the scene somewhat more, there are an infinite number of ways interactivity could be added of course, which will require your decisions at every level of new interactivity added to that final design.
(NB - materials - only planned to use plain shaders on this scene anyway, doesn't really need much in way of textures)

Actually it's not even possible to see one's own Avatar when standing in front of the Direct3D Render to Target camera live in the truePlace Meetingroom, others can see you but you cannot see yourself.
Unfortunately no on mirrored materials, this is a feature we all want badly and hope will be introduced with the rollout of the next trueServe and truePlay software upgrades previously announced by Roman in his Captain's Blog.
Hope that helps,

Now more folks can join in with you guys too who may have been tied up with something else before now!
It sure gives all you guys plenty of time to really make these entries shine!
Excellent! I can't wait to see what all you guys are going to do now!:D
This will be a total blast!
If I can help in any way with anyone's entry don't hesitate to PM me on it.
