Changed the page just a little, to add in use of tS7.5 demo, and to change the "looks like being a lot of fun" expression since that seemed to puzzle some :)

Thanks Tom, the Demo link is an excellent idea.
This should be a lot of fun tonight, and there's already a lot of things going on in there 2 hours ahead of time....
I learned I could walk up someone's attention beam and jump over their hat for instance. A most interesting experience indeed.:D
I also learned I could change all my realtime Avatar colors easily in the LE of trueSpace7.51, and you never know when one may suddenly feel the need to stand out among the snowmen.:D
Thanks for all your help here seriously, I know this will be a great thing for us all and will become very popular very fast now.
All the best,

I can't get in to set up, 'doh. I emailed Tom so hopefully he gets the message and can pass it along to someone who can fix it before the meeting.
If not, perhaps we could meet in another room or the tS portal. I would like to meet in the tP portal though if possible so people with tP can attend. We'll have to play it by ear I guess. |

A few glitches here and there but it looks like your first night went well! Another facet of TS was explored and explained by Dele. A nice turnout. (I think you lost a few truePlay folks in the beginning) It was weird entering with truePlay and seeing Roman as the Doorman.
You guys did good! I'm sure it will just get better and better...
Thanks for all your efforts getting a community-organized event to shine. |

Thanks Steinie. Yeah, there are some glitches that I'm sure will get ironed out in time, but it was definitely still fun meeting with everyone. I think it was a pretty good turnout too.
When I was cleaning up I realized that I had forgotten to hook up the scale from the "bitmap ratio reader" into the projector screen, 'doh. The screen was supposed to scale to the ratio of the image. So a few of the images were stretched out and hard to read. Sorry about that folks. I was in a rush setting up due to the fact that we couldn't get into shared space for a while there.
Still, it was fun to hang out. Thanks for setting this up Frootee. Now I can't wait until the next meeting where I get to sit back and learn. :) |

the concept was great;) ..thanks to Dele and Frootee.but sadly I see no point in trying to go anymore. a 56k modem won't cut it with all that going on..:( I only caught a few words with voice on. crashed truespace when Dele had the percent error in his script because I had opened it a minute earlier. it wasn't long before I lagged too far behind, and I used to like going to the meeting |

Well, couple things to consider here. 3dv had some ideas for solving this, but I think we need to work together to implement it. Maybe he can explain his thoughts here on the subject. It's based on trueblue's browser script I think.
The live presentation was really interesting, but is not the only way to do this. If other people want to present a training item like this, they can prepare it in advance, then everyone can download the video (or powerpoint presentation, etc.) and view it well before the meeting (couple days in advance). Then, at the meeting, we could have a slide show presentation based on Dele's bitmap ratio screen (with no audio to worry about), which would cut down on bandwidth and hopefully resolve the problems folks with 56k modems are having. People could ask questions (by typing), and the presenter can load the script in question onto the bitmap viewer. In addition, those wanting to answer will also type. Or speak in concise statements (kind of like software code is!) Also, there's no reason why we have to have only ONE bitmap viewer in the space right? We can also save bandwidth if we use a cleaner space (without as many detailed objects maybe? Although the ambience is totally cool)! Usually when I am working on code, I use 2 monitors, and have at least 5 or 6 code windows open, plus debug windows, etc. So we can have several scripts on several screens at the same time so people can more readily see the flow.
Now, in order to keep things interesting and from degrading into an uninteresting event, we need to have a plan: basically, something to talk about or work on before / during the meeting. For example, a 'challenge' problem (or problems) to work on in scripting and the LE. This will give us all a focus and motivation for learning, together, scripting and the LE.
I suggest having a couple types of scripts to work on: A simple script, for beginners, and a more advanced script, for those that are advanced and need more of a challenge. I feel that if if we work together on problems it will be easier to avoid floundering and giving up in frustration, so I encourage the scripting folks to work together, post questions, PM's, etc.
I'd like to kick this off with a simple script I was working on. It is based on PK's morph script. I will have to post it later, but it modifies a plane to wave, looking like a flag. It moves OK, but could look a lot better. I'll try to put something together for it soon.
If anyone has an idea for a tougher scripting project, please post it, and be concise and specific in your request.
Thanks for making this a success folks. We can make it happen if we work together!

BTW... this is the link I was referring to last night, for an intro to LE and scripting. This is a powerpoint presentation with a free powerpoint viewer. More is coming...

And here are some snapshots taken from the Tuesday night script chat. The coolest thing, in my opinion, was Dele's use of the presentation screen which he created. These are snapshots of that.
The full size images, along with 13 others, are included in the rar file. You can untar it, then zoom in to your liking. |

I would have to agree that a 56k modem just won't work well enough with this new technology. By the time you add graphics and sound bandwidth and then add objects and such, 56k just is not enough to allow for enjoyment of the spaces. Every week Stan shows up and I see he is lagging constantly. There is just no other way to put it; 56k just doesn't cut it anymore :( |

OK guys,
trueBlue has just developed a new live presentation method for us all to use online, you will find it and an updated version of it in the following thread:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=726 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=726)
You will find there a working truePlay version you can each test yourselves right now, I just did and it works excellently. Just use truePlay file - load, or load it in trueSpace7.51 and have a look under the hood at it in the LE.
Using this method for group presentations of prerecorded audio and video or documents during any large live online meeting in truePlaces should reduce server load significantly in cases where the source content resides on a different server than that of the meeting itself.
As a byproduct of that, it should enable those of us with dialup connections worldwide to attend these large meetings with significantly less bandwidth issues (lag) and interruptions, it won't solve them all though.
Maybe now we can all even hear Roman this coming Thursday, and next Tuesday Roman can hear you guys as well.;)
Now we just need colors assigned to the text of everyone typing in there.:D
Whew.... how many breakthroughs can all of you Scripting Artists create in a week? If these last 7 days are any indication, we'll be buried in them all within a month!
Awesome development, let's put it to use right away.

Hi Froo,
I agree with all of what you said above.
In addition to it I also believe it is extremely important to provide two periods (one at the start and another at the end) of all such meetings where people have an opportunity to discuss "all things related to scripting and interactive scene development" which might otherwise falll outside the scope of a particular meeting's announced intent.
Otherwise some here who may wish to discuss any peripherally related issues there with you may not attend at all until whatever specific thing interests them happens to fall on one of your weekly subject agendas.
My two cents anyhow.:)

I have an idea where we could do tutorials and presentations all within a panel. Each aspect in the panel would be a different page. You could run commands with buttons, display images and text. Everybody could be in sync with what is being demonstrated.
Again for the "Live Scripting Meetings" we need a 3D Space with Grid and Lights only. |

Awesome!
That's definitely an innovative idea there!
As it is right now the version you just updated is perfect as a conduit for live content which does not reside on the meeting server itself and bog it down during large meetings.
It serves rather as an "extra" and external truePlay1.3 child window which effectively bypasses the meeting server altogether by providing that content directly from it's source on a different server to our own pc screens by means of our own default web browsers within that second truePlay window.
I very much want that same type of capability within a texture on a screen object inside a trueServe / truePlay multi-user environment, but my only concern in that approach is that it may not achieve that same desired bandwidth bypass effect if the content destination is the meeting server itself as opposed to being sent directly to default browsers on our own pc's.
Right now, unless I'm mistaken, it should reduce server load considerably, but if it can be done the way you describe here without adding to server load and bandwidth it would be an absolutely tremendous tool to have for all of us, especially for Caligari at the moment!
That would really be cool!
Mark / 3dvisuals dude
PS: you're right about us needing nothing more than a very simple room. |

Hi trueblue. Sounds cool. Would you like to demonstrate it at the next meeting? It's up for grabs if you want. :)
3dv: that is a good idea about setting aside some time at the beginning and end for that type of thing.

You really did a great job Délé, now all we need to do is find creative ways to eliminate the audio distortion issue until the next truePlay rolls out to address that as Roman indicated previously.
Along those lines, I am one of those guys who knows nothing whatsoever about audio technology apart from plugging a guitar into an amp. But this new development here of trueBlue's brings some interesting audio potentials along with it as well I think, and maybe there's one to solve this issue completely.
Is there a way that you know of to stream audio from only 1 mike on the Caligari truePlace Server to some kind of "web broadcast" in realtime which could then be heard on everyone's home pc who is attending the meeting, only instead of it coming from the server to a dozen truePlay/trueSpace endpoints (as it now does) it terminates at a default web browser plugin on everyone's home pc?
If this is possible, it would mean the audio of the speaker at the meeting would bypass the current issues we are experiencing completely, with only one audio channel being used during the meeting by only one person at a time.

I will try but I can not promise until I have one finished. But if someone else can make it before I do, go for it. Just remember you can Detach it in tS7 and also set it to Show Automatically for tPlay from the top left menu in the panel. |

Thanks for that tip trueBlue, I never would have found that otherwise!
I'm looking forward to chatting with you at the next Tuesday Script Hookup meeting about your browser above. I also have some pretty wild development ideas I wanna run past you and I think you might just wanna join me in having some fun developing them together and surprising a few folks.;)
I think I'll be able to spot you there next time by your avatar scale settings and that blue hat if I recall right.:D
