A few months back I used the demo version of GenHead 3.1 to create a 3D model of my head. While I was very pleased with the end result, the only thing that bugged me slightly was the way it flattened the hair on my head and washed out my goatee.
Well, as you can see, my goatee has grown back quite well, thank you !
LOL!
I have recently completed my upgrade path and have moved from TrueSpace 5.1 to TrueSpace 7.51. TrueSpace 7.51 saw a huge interface redesign for Caligari's flatship title and also a whole host of new features added. Of the many new features added, hair/fur was one of them.
Using the new tools, I attempted to add back my hair and goatee that GenHead flattened and washed out. Applying the new hair is a fairly easy task, though it can be a bit time consuming to 'brush' the hair into the desired direction and flow that you want. But the new hair tools are easy to use and quite powerful.
My goatee grew back quite well, as you can see from the render. However, when I moved on to add the hair back onto the top of my head, I encountered a problem. So many strands of hair were needed that all my systems resouces were consumed (and I have 2Gb of RAM!!) so as you can see, the cap remains.
But take a look at the image. My goatee consists of four parts; the centre upper lip, left of centre upper lip, right of centre upper lip, and the whole chin area. Also, my eye brows have also been repopulated with hair. Suffice to say, there's a hell of a lot of hair in that pic... Yet TrueSpace 7.51's interface remained smooth and fluid and didn't suffer slow down when working with these hairs in real time. Also, the rendering process, with all settings set to highest quality, took less then a minute to do at 800 x 600 resolution. Not bad, eh!
While I would have liked to have added all my hair back, I think this image really stands out now that my goatee is back in place. Also, considering that this is the very first piece of work I've done with TrueSpace 7.51, I'm damn impressed!!! |

Good job Paul - a decent beard is a thing of true beauty (mine is 10 inches long!). |

Thanks, Wizard. I'm very pleased with how this image worked out. I usually do a test run on tools to get the feel for them before I start to actually do a proper scene with them. But the image above, that's my test run!! I sat down, loaded up my head avatar, opened the TrueSpace 7.51 manual on the pages on working with hair and followed the advanced hair steps and techniques and the result is above. No testing done prior, this was the testing of working with hair and the fact it turned out so well really pleases me.
Also, there is an error in the manual in this section. After you select the area to what to grow hair on and you copy it, the manual said to then use Extend Selection. Don't do this! If you do and then Delete as instructed, the whole object gets deleted. Instead, once you have copied the polygons, used Invert Selection and then delete. This deletes all the other polygons and leaves behind the copied one. Though I do wonder why we need to copy? Why not select, invert, delete??? Anyway, this is how it works.
(mine is 10 inches long!).
Are you refering to your avatar or your real beard?
Just curious! ;) |

LOL! My real beard! About two and a half years ago I was clean shaven - including my head! For various reasons (not least that I was sick of shaving!) I decided just to let it all grow. This has caused some surprising reactions to say the least!
@Steinie - What did you think I meant? ;) |

Paul,
Your head looks pretty cool. Does the demo version allow you export a mesh which can be imported into TS? May I ask what the file format is. The GenHead website wasn't very clear about what could actually be done with the demo. I don't have any need for the program myself but it would be fun to have editable 3D model of my head. :-) |

Hi Darrell.
I used the demo version from issue 90 of 3D World magazine. It's a fairly straight forward process. Take a front and side photo of your head, then import them into GenHead and it will guide you through the process of laying the markers it needs. Once done, it creates the head, textures and all. The file is exported as an OBJ file so use the OBJ importer extension in TrueSpace to load it and it works fine.
I'm not sure about the demo on the GenHead website, but the one on 3D World lasted seven days.
It was seeing Splinters head model which he created using the same GenHead demo that inspired me to give it a go. I'm delighted I did because its a unique item to have in my 3D collection.
Best of luck with it and be sure to post your results for us all to see! |

Looks good Paul!
I think maybe I'll do this too sometime... I want to see what I'll look like with bright purple 20 inch Liberty Spikes in a Mohawk cut.:D
Hell, if I like it I may even have it done in RL! Hahahaha!
(maybe then my wife won't want me to put out the trash anymore for fear the neighbors would see me;) )

Thanks Paul. I see the demo page says that if you buy the program, it will export OBJ. I'm assuming that means the web demo doesn't export OBJ. I may give it a try anyway just for kicks. Thanks again. |

Umm... But won't that be a problem in bed... Lie on your back and you crush the spikes (or impale the pillow! LOL!!!). Lie on your side, and your wife better watch out! LOL!! |

Ahh... The 3D World demo must have been a special. Note that the preview image in GenHead isn't rotatable (well, I couldn't figure out how to rotate it), but it does give you a good idea of the finished model. It's seeing it in a 3D package (TrueSpace), that really lets you see the results. If I remember correctly, my head model went through 15 odd interpitations before I was happy with it.
Check out Splinters head model (the thread should be down a bit in these forums). While I'm very pleased with my results, Splinters seemed to get better results then I did. As I said, it was seeing his result that inspired me to create my head. |
