Good grief! Who has time to play games? Even if I could afford them time spent playing a game is modelling/learning/artmaking time lost to me. I have a PS2 and we use for watching DVD's - hasn't had a game played on it for months!
I've seen some TV ads for bioshock - they certainly look like killer graphics but I'f I played a game like that I'd be spending all my tgime wondering how to make something similar using trueSpace! I'd probably never get past the first level :D |

Well for me, it helps to have breaks sometimes. Like I took a break from tS for a few weeks to work on some flash stuff. When I got back I started writing a whole bunch of scripts. Sometimes getting away for a while can refresh your mind. Games can also do this for me. They can let me forget about everything I'm working on and come back to it fresh.
Although, I do analyze games too. Try to understand the texturing tricks they're using, how the game is layed out, and how I could script similar game play. So for me it's kind of a half break from reality, half learning time. |

I play games because after a long work day, I am wayyyyy to wiped out to do something creative like modeling (or music, or writing, or all the other creative stuff I used to do hehe!). Time for the mindless stuff that doesn't take my brain power - cue the games!
Besides, without games, I wouldn't even be involved in 3D (Half Life's Worldcraft was what got me started in 3D, see what Half Life is responsible for hehe).
Thanks!

Bioshock installed ok and runs without problems on Vista 32bit Home Premium. So far.
Bit hard and almost dead with no first aid kits in sight I may have to do the honourable thing. Extremely gorgeous 60fps renders :)
But seriously TrueSpace will be doing this realtime rendering any build now. There's time to pause and look around in there and it's not beyond Roman to give us realtime renders with all the DX9/10 goodness. Bioshock has to spend time doing all the other housekeeping while still rendering huge framerate. TrueSpace only has to handle the rendering
I wish Workspace realtime rendering could look like this but I have high hopes for this soon. Ish :)
Wait a minute- maybe it can. Ooh spooky

Well, it came today and I installed it this evening. I played it for about 45min and no major problems yet. There was one movie sequence where I got a couple black squares for a second, but haven't had that during game play yet. I did notice that there was a patch that downloaded and installed right after I installed the disk. Perhaps some issues were fixed. I'll keep my fingers crossed. This also finally forced me to update my graphics drivers. Looks like the latest ones are finally working with tS good. Now I just have to fix my color correction again, ah.
As for the game there are some really cool graphics and the sound is great. Really creepy game. The only thing I'm not really liking is how dark everything always is. I feel like I'm running around in pitch black trying to shoot bad guys I can't even see half the time. I have the brightness turned all the way up on my screen and it's still really dark. I like the creepiness, it would just be nice to see a bit too. :) |

I started with worldcraft too before valve took it over and it was used for quake and quake 2...it kicked ass but was never any good with it.
I also remember playing with 3d graphics on an Atari ST using assembly language and no floating point maths - fun...NOT... I still dabble with direct x and visual studio at times and the best I can get with that is a spinning cube...I guess the fact that you can animate something very quickly using TrueSpace is what caught my attention...and the fun of being creative without coding.
As for games, I've actually been playing games since I was 8,possibly younger, and had an old Atari 2600 - now that's going back. I find that sometimes games can be stressful though. Like, before coming to work today I was playing Ninety-Nine Nights on the Xbox and it's a beautiful game but you can only save at the end of the level which sucks and the end of level boss totally kicked my rear end....frustrating...will try again tonight :D
And I really want Bioshock...just waiting for the price to come down a bit... |

Have you tried the in game brightness settings? I have not had to touch mine and it is fine on my Sony TFT.
By the way, I cured the freezing problem. Not sure if it was a driver issue or something I tweaked but I also took the case side off and put a large fan next to it to aid cooling. Apparently Bioshock gives your system a realwork out and overheating would seem to be common with other users too. |

Atari 2600, lol. We had one of those too. I remember playing Joust and Alternate Reality a lot. We also had a TI (Texes Instrument). Parsec and Hunt The Wumpus were my favorite games on that. Ah the good 'ol days, when blotchy pixels and impossible game control was actually fun, lol. :)

No I didn't notice that in the settings. I'll try it today and see if it helps. Thanks. I'm still trying to get my color back to normal from updating the drivers too. Every time I install new graphic drivers my screen gets way too blue. I still don't have it quite right. |

I'm totally NOT dissing games - and I can easily relate to the inspiration they can provide. I've spent a bit of time blasting aliens over the years.
I guess for me that trueSpace provides many of the same challenges as a game - 'how do I get past this tricky texturing or modelling block' is just as challenging and stimulating as 'how do I get past this nasty monster?' On the odd occasion when I do get tS lagged then I can boot up MojoWorld or Vue or just surf the net. If I get really pc lagged I'll go pick up my guitar or watch a DVD. Because I like Sci fi movies almost invariably watching one will give me the inspiration and motivation to boot up trueSpace again and I'm right back where I started!
Then again I always was an odd bugger!:D :D |

OK true or false is there is a "Dr. Steinman" in this game? One of the evil characters. |

They're all psychotic, lol.
I'm liking the game. I did get the brightness up. I guess my gamma was set pretty low. I am running into a few rendering problems here and there though. Sometimes black boxes pop up. Maybe I just need to lower some settings or something. The big thing that is really bugging the heck out of me though, is that it overwrites my ICC profile every time I play. I just caught on to this today. I exit the game and my screen is way too blue again, arrggg. I can't imagine why in the world it's overwriting my saved ICC profile. |

I've only played it for a little while the other day but during the time since I've been planning how to get maximum resources next time so I don't end up in a heap. So I know it's a bit good :)
overwrites my ICC profile
Délé can you make your profile read-only maybe before starting the game? Or copy it out and back in if not?

As of this morning, AVG now defines the Bioshock.exe as a virus (well documented problem on the 2K forums) and I can no longer play the game without uninstalling my anti-virus. I was really enjoying this but enough is enough....back to my Wii and a bit of tS work me thinks...:o |

Perhaps it's a blessing...I do notice AVG does that occasionally...It annoys the hell out of me. Can't you override though?? |

Maybe i could but I refuse to spend any more of my diminishing free time on simply getting it to run...where is the fun left in playing. Anyway it has been returned for a refund. Maybe, like Paul Boland, I will pick it up later and probably at a budget price too! |
