This might be a dumb question but the offer of gamespace and realmcrafter got me thinking: How much effort would it take to make trueplay into a game engine like the one that must be included in realmcrafter?

Has anyone at caligari thought of this? Not only would you offer the means to medel a game but also the engine to play it with.

TruePlay architecture is designed for game development.

If I had some time left, I would like to create a race game (avatars being cars).

BTW, this could be a community project... Anyone interested ?

There is one difference in that game engines are optimised for just one thing, playing games. truePlay is a general purpose tool though for all sorts of 3D uses so it doesn't feature all the same optimisations.

It is perfectly up to the task of making games though! And good ones too. But there would be a scaling type issue - for games above a certain size or complexity, a tool created specifically to do that would likely be better.

Optimising it for certain types of gaming would result in it becoming less useful for other uses, which is what we don't want to move away from. We want it to remain a general purpose tool suitable for trialing your game level, for collaborative modeling between designers, for architects to walk clients through possible designs, for people to meet and have fun on a Thursday night, for training, for attending distributed class at University to learn about molecules, and many more uses!

It's a question of the right tool for the right job - and truePlay is indeed the right tool for the right sort of game, it's a matter of looking into what sort of game it is you want to create :)

HTH!
