Hi folks. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot this past Tuesday evening. Dele gave us a live tutorial on use of the LE and scripting, complete with a presentation screen which had screenshots of his script code. Now that was the coolest thing of the evening, IMHO.
This week we have more cool stuff in store. There's lots to learn about the LE and scripting, and the best way is to dig in, and learn from others LIVE!
I will be dropping an object into the LE that I created using a modified version of ProfessorKaos's Morph script. This is a flag object. You click on the Start button in the LE, and the vertices oscillate. I also Frankenstein'd Dele's spring script to get the flag to 'wave'. I am personally not entirely satisfied with the way it moves so maybe we can work on it together Tuesday to get it looking better. Everyone can pitch in and try different things. We can make this a truly collaborative effort. One idea would be to make several copies of the finished product and apply a unique texture to each; one for each country of the world, for example. Instead of the United Nations, it could be United Scriptors! :)
In addition, 3dvisuals Dude will be presenting a project which he has been hammering on for the past couple days. He will be demonstrating his recent discoveries for us all regarding an entirely new and cool way for us all to use truePlay1.3 with our own scenes at home. I won't spill the beans on all that here but I'll tell you this, it's something you don't want to miss out on at all!
This will be a very interactive and fun event so be sure to mark your calendars!

Here is the flag we will be discussing Tuesday. Feel free to download it, study it, play with it, etc.
In the script, experiment with the scale factor in front of the time_vary variable. The time_vary variable is used to allow the sine wave to move through space in the x direction, simulating wind blowing across the face of the flag.

Interesting Froo. Nice job! :) You went about it differently then I had imagined. I'll have to take a close look at your script.
I tried the Wind Dance script with it to give more of a gusting wave. It worked pretty good. |

nice changes guys. The wind dance script is really interesting, specifically the summation of cosine functions. The texture modulation used to simulate flame was really cool too. Thanks Norm! This is a good starting point for me to understand texture mods.
question about the texture modulation script:
Is the OnDefaultValue(params) function the default function which is called when we right click on an attribute name and select reset? If not, how do we configure the function name that gets called for this action?

hmm ... OnComputeOutputs is the main function. It is older script and all the OnDefaultValue does is populate the initial values for the attributes. R-click does nothing when reset is used.
The comments about r-click could be removed from script. No longer valid. Check a plain/default jscript object and you see the only valid comment for OnDefaultValue.

Thanks Délé,
Coming from you that means a lot to me.:)
I had a feeling the potentials for that one wouldn't escape your notice, you always have one eye toward detail and the other toward innovation, a great combination indeed for development work.;)
Thanks... this coming Tuesday's events just may surprise a few folks.:D

trueSpace7.5 Demo User Instructions
If you are someone reading this thread trying to see how to make your new trueSpace7.5 Demo program connect to the truePlaces Portal where this Tuesday Meeting will be held, just follow the instructions carefully on the following page.
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=43977&postcount=30 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=43977&postcount=30)
The whole process is explained there along with images to help you do this for the first time.
If you have any difficulty with that you can still use truePlay1.3 ( http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts75/Brochure/truePlaces.asp?SubCate=S2forum (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts75/Brochure/truePlaces.asp?SubCate=S2forum) ) to go right to the online Forum just outside the Meetingroom. When you arrive at that Forum you will immediately see a horizontal link bar in front of you with several room designations depicted there as icons. We will all be in the "Meetingroom" and the icon for that is on that linkbar.
See you there, this will be fun.:)

Thanks Froo,
There really will be some fantastic new things for everyone to try out and have fun with on Tuesday, and they won't need to know even a bit about scripting to have a very exciting time there at all.
I have so many things to share with everybody there it's gonna be wild!!!
Oh yeah... I'll also be giving away a special new working scripted 3D model I made for everyone who shows up for the whole meeting on the 28th... your own personal working Stargate.:D
See you there!

Just a quick reminder about the next Scriptor meeting Tuesday Aug. 28 at 9 PM EST.
I'll be presenting a flag scene which is animated through scripting.
3dVisuals Dude will be presenting a fast-evolving script which gives us the ability to load any executable we wish, web pages, truespace documents, trueplay scenes maybe? All kinds of stuff (I can't keep up anymore! :) )
but lots of stuff is brewing with that idea.
Also, if you want to bring anything to show or ask questions about, please feel free to do so! After we present these two main topics mentioned above we can have a troubleshooting session. It's up to you !
So mark your calendars and eat your dinner early (or just bring it with you ; just make sure you bring enough for everyone! :D ) This meeting is going to be a lot of fun!

Here's a couple of handy links related to tonights meeting:
A Global Countdown Timer page for this meeting:
http://www.caligari.com/ScriptLive.asp (http://www.caligari.com/ScriptLive.asp)
Specific Instruction Posts for getting there via trueSpace7.5x or truePlay1.3:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=45426&postcount=13 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=45426&postcount=13)
I'll be sharing a couple of discoveries I've made here and there recently which are pretty cool for all of us to use in various ways, I'll also be giving out a free "personal working Stargate" model as well.
Most importantly though I'll be introducing an entirely new kind of truePlay Development tonight, something each of you may find very exciting indeed, and it may well lead to the rapid sharing here of new types of files and scripted objects which we are all likely to use a great deal from that point forward. It may well also spawn new related competitions here.
I've also prepared a few screenshots of various ways these can be done, and will have a new monitor display there to put some of those up at various points throughout the meeting.
I'll also be touching briefly on a couple of ways we could each start to develop commercial applications utilizing truePlay online and offline.
All that should actually only take a few minutes to describe really, and since I'm going to be the last Speaker here tonight I'd like to leave the majority of my time wide open for all Development Related discussion. With the recent advent of numerous and powerful scripts enabling our growth as a Community in several exciting ways, I believe we will all have a great deal of questions on many related levels, and that this would be the perfect time to raise them for us all.
See you in a few,:)

glad you guys liked it! I enjoyed it too; it was better typing, since there was no lag in the words. the spelling was bad sometimes though.
I hope others liked it too. I hope we can keep it going! I'll see who wants to go next...

Thanks guys,
Froo's flag was definitely cool and useful.
I left the monitor for whoever wants to save it to object too. And a palm tree (long story:p ).
Sure would have been nice if my microphone hadn't decided to die, but Murphy's law and all, I guess it was to be expected!
Kind of hard to be a speaker when you can't talk and type with a white cane, but somehow a few cool things managed to transpire after Froo's success.
Now we just have to sit back and see how deep that rabbit hole goes after everyone discovers that blue pill I introduced there. (a Matrix joke... :D )
3 and 1/2 hours later we finished, much was said and learned, tomorrow calls now.
Thanx guys,
Mark |

thanks Frootee.. you said you made many typing mistakes last night, why didn't you copy and paste from your transcript? I like the idea of transcripts, they become something to study at your own convience..Dele's live talk is gone, and I couldn't hear most of it, so couldn't say it has the impact of the written word..text is how those meeting should be, and a transcript of it for future learning..:)
shouldn't the transcript also be posted with your flag object in its original thread? |

I pledge to give you continued support and even better scripting tools soon. Once we have a growing collection of ever more usefull script objects, the rest of trueSpace cumunity will realize the potential of this promise for them. |

This very good news... I just want to throw in that we have reached
a point where we dont know where those fantastic scripts are all
stored. To just let them "rust" away is waste of potential .
What we need pretty soon is that they are all stored in one place.
with a new kind of indexing 1
That would be great !

Weeeelllll.... you see... .here's what happened....
I typed that on my lunch break at work, but forgot to email it to myself at my home address... but I did print it out (Thankfully!) because I figured I would be relying heavily upon it. Without that I would have been hosed!
Good idea about posting with the flag object! I will do that Stan.
I was also thinking about using it as a baseline for another powerpoint tutorial, if there is interest in it.

Good point Rayman. Lots of these are in the Scriptorium forum, as well as the Garage and Interactive Artwork forums, but yeah, these need to be consolidated.
Jayr has put a transporter in his Manor scene too. Really cool!
