That gate is terrific........ perhaps some distress in the texture to go with the worn wood.

Mmmm, does the forum not accept animated Gif's?

Not very big files Paul !

Just big enough for thumbnails and smilies...:(

Good point Bill but I was actually thinking that the wood looked too old and worn for such a shiny new gate. Also looks like the site is a bit 'derelict'.

Either way, one or the other needs tweaking I agree.

@Peter. Yes I just realised my gif got converted to a Jpeg. I thought it was pretty small but obviously too big to post.

More later.....paying work is breathing down my neck...:o

Anyone know how to get a mouseover effect to play a sound?

I want the sound of jet engines roaring when you move your mouse over the rocket in the image below. Second image shows the image change as if the rocket is ready to launch but for the life of me I cannot get it to work.

Because this is effectively two images that alternate when you move the mouse over the hotspot I am getting the sound as soon as the page opens as it sees the whole image as the 'hot spot'.

So, I put in a layer and set the behavior to 'play sound' on mouseover...but it does not play. Is it because there is nothing actually in the layer or is it that a layer cannot activate a sound. If that is the case then why does it let you set a behavior for it??

Puzzled and frustrated. I am using Frontpage for speed but have had no other issues like this.

Heeeeeeelllllllppppppp!!

Hey Paul! Sorry I have not been in regular attendance of late. I am working on getting my new rig to behave itself.... it is at the petulant child stage.

Would you please upload the page and dependent objects in a zip file so I can have a look under the covers?

I work better visually so I made this to help. Thought I would share it here. This is all I could (comfortably) fit on one sheet and does not include the full range of books or character/location pages. When I add activities and games it should be plenty full to keep a young child occupied...:D

Struggling here to find one single project to update first..:(

Here is the Creepy Castle Gallery though...I may make the Castle interactive/exporable while I re-render the book images.

Hi Paul,

Great site.

Just a slight observation - get a mail form if you can instead of an email link on your FAQ page. My wife and I were getting in excess of 2000 junk messages a day because we had our email address all over our site. Changed to a form and filtered the emails and now we're down to maybe 2 dozen. If you can do PHP or asp on your site that would take care of it quite nicely.

If that's beyond your current ability (no idea? I couldn't do it!) an easy interim solution is to only feature your email address as text within an image, i.e in your photoshop (or whatever) image, so that it can't be recognised as text. Means people have type it in manually though - such hard work!

Good point .... at the very least consider obfuscating your email address.

Use a search engine to find "email obfuscator" and you should see a web site in the first 10 that does this online. You just need to copy and paste the code into your page.

Still running on backup PC .... will catch up with you soon.

Alas, this is my curse and the reason this project is taking so long; I load up a picture for converting into a webpage, decide it looks outdated, then spend hours remaking it. I fear there will be a lot of books I will not make public until I have redesigned them. This shows the original (top) and the one I just made. I certainly think the difference is noticable...:o

I would think there are very few artists that look at what they did some years ago without feeling the desire to change it. It is part of artistic evolution.

BTW I seem to have stabilized my new machine and will work on the sound effects on the weekend.

Cheers!

Great works of art are never finished - merely abandoned. It's always a temptation to do something more to them.

Splinters, the new text style in this pic seems a little harder (I couldn't quite make out 'Edwinas room' but I was also looking on my older PC with the slowly dying monitor) to read but on the other hand it looks much better in consistency with a 'real' 3d environment. A worthwhile improvement IMO

You are right Wizard; there is a subtle drop shadow causing a blurring effect, although reducing it ti 640x480 has not helped. It looks very clear on the website (you have access...;))

I am also going to follow through the idea of 'growing' titles like the main map. Kids seem to like it and it helps those with difficulty reading...including their 'ageing' parents. ;)

LOL - Aging parent - that's me though I'm not sure how it happened so quickly!!;).

"Growing" titles are the perfect solution - I should have known you'd have it covered.:D

I have yet to make the 'growing' icons for the Creepy Castle entrance page but it is pretty clear in full size.

Creepy Castle seems to be getting the focus this week although I updated a lot of stuff so that offer of a free viewing still stands.

I thought the Creepy Castle logo needed updating so I made a new one. Let me know what you think of it.

Oh, and I found an old render from when I thought these would make a great line of toys. I believe you spotted the same potential on the site Jack!!

Amazing work Paul! I am taken in with your images. They like draw you in or at least me. What keeps going around in my head is animations/stories brought to life of your characters. I guess web site first though then hopefully a few movies.

Just a quickie.

As ever I am well impressed by your artwork, and I agree that the new look is better.

My quick observation.. Trying to look through the eyes of my 5, almost 6 year old daughter, who would love your work. I don't think the average 5/6 year old would understand the word "various"

Up to you, and more work, but thats my experience.

Cheers

Still willing you on to be one almighty success

Cheers guys; I will change that wording.

Do you think the new logo works better? You can see the old one on the toy's backing card.

@Noko, agreed but you know me: web site first so I have an experience that can be seen whole, then start tweaking things.

I have a great idea for the DSD intro movie: it is all storyboarded...but I am no animator. Maybe pixar could help......

Well 90% of a movie is story and content, I think you have that with a whole universe, the rest is telling it. :)

Holy cow! Sound and web site integration has gotten wilder since I last looked at it.

Paul, which browsers do you want your site to support?

I would assume that the minimum would be IE and FF.

As to media players should we look for flash, shockwave, Windows Media Player and say Quicktime? I have no idea if the Realplayer plug in is still as popular as it once was....

Please advise and I will start cooking..... lol

Spot on Bill, I am looking to IE and FF at the moment. Not too sure about media for now...I just have sounds and animated gifs' ( I really don't do animations!).

BUT...I don't want to take up your personal or working time Bill and I have no funds to pay anyone at the moment...this is just a proof of concept until I go live so there is no income from the project...:o

I appreciate any and all help but have to say that I am not in a position to 'employ' anyone just now...just so you know...:)

I am not looking for compensation on this one Paul. I have no problem contributing available time to help you with this project, regardless the size of the task. If you need dedicated project time then we would need to discuss remuneration.

When I left banking some years ago I worked with a relative on a startup company for a board game. The experience is extremely similar and the budget I am certain is the same. Although, LOL, I hope your venture is much more successful.

To explain the issue with players etc better,

The only web browser with "built in" sound is IE. IE can assume, or should I say "reasonably expects", that the environment it is running in will have Windows Media Player installed.

All other browsers, FF, Opera, Safari.... do not make any assumptions regarding sound in their operating environment. As such, the sound code you have on your site (BGSOUND) is an IE only tool. IE will play your jet sound, nothing else will, the command is not recognized.

When coding sound into a page for FF, Opera etc. you need to look at the potential list of plug ins to sound players. Flash, shockwave and quicktime are pretty much available on all platforms as well as having plugins implemented on most browsers.

I will confine myself to javascript/Ajax sound support and look around to see what tools there might be to make the addition of sound effects the least amount of work etc. and get back to you.

Bill, you are a star. Thankfully I have Hemulin and a friend (who is a commercial programmer) also offering to help. Maybe this is where that saying about being 'nice on the way up' rings true...;)

And rest assured, should I ever make a substantial amount of money from this. those who helped will certainly be rewarded...:D
