You ever get the feeling you're cursed?

Sorry for the delay again guys, I was finishing things up late Monday night, actually preparing for a release yesterday, when I got horribly sick. I've just now sat back down at the PC, and will be taking it easy for the rest of the day.

More news as it happens. Or doesn't :D

Anyway, to respond to a few things..

DAZ Studio was actually a good feasibility test for me when I decided to finally get dribble up and running for people other than myself. There's really no way of knowing that a Renderman-renderer is powering that software, and they have to make it workable for a wide variety of users (and probably less technically proficient than trueSpace users). Other than that though, comparisons don't make much sense - shaders are different, lights are different, etc.

As to why you'd use dribble instead of V-Ray for trueSpace.. it's a few things really. There are some things not yet included in V-Ray, such as motion blur. True displacement mapping is a big deal, and Renderman renderers handle it very, very well, especially if you don't need to raytrace. I won't make any speed claims because that's highly dependent on your scene - in my tests, some things have been slower than V-Ray, some things faster. In time, dribble will allow for custom shaders, something which V-Ray can't do. Bottom line though is that it's just another tool in your toolbox, and it's always good to have choices.

AND it's a heck of a lot cheaper it sounds!

Thank You for making it affordable SiW.

Great news Simon, only blighted by the grim day I just had...Leaking water through the ceiling. One puzzled plumber and an emergency plumber from the Insurance company later and I find I have a leak under the bath which means ripping much of the bathroom/floor/downstairs celing out.

As if that were not bad enough, it seem much of my cold water supply is lead piping which they tell me will have to be ripped out and replaced at my own cost!!

Given the extortionate cost of both copper piping and plumbers in the UK(who still suck through their teeth when quoting) looks like I am gonna be skint this christmas....and beyond.

So Simon, inside I am jumping for joy at this news but as another drip hits the kitchen floor (no, they couldn't even repair it today) I wonder if I am even able to afford this little luxury....:o :(

Would probably be cheaper to fly in an American Plumber with parts to repair your plumbing problems Splinter. :)

Good news on the release, will look forward to examining it.

Aw man, sorry to hear that. Although contractors sucking through their teeth is not a UK-specific phenomenon :P

Maybe I'll offer a layaway plan just for you..

Great News!?! you should be in my house right now.

As for up and running...it is, bl**dy water everywhere. I can't stop it...

Seriously though...it's great news and I may have to have a dabble in dribble (as if I weren't already...:( )

Man Splinters, if it's at your own cost, wouldn't it be cheaper to do the plumbing work yourself? Plumbing is pretty easy stuff these days and there's a lot of how-to guides and books out there. Just order the parts on-line and have fun with it. :D

So it's going to be a bit later on today, but it will be today! I swear!

Jack - plumbing, like surgery, is one of the things you don't do yourself.

Just did two bathroom remodels, one with the assistance of a plumber and the other by myself. Plumbing is easy. It's all PVC stuff and compression fittings these days. I guess you could still do copper piping and solder the stuff if you really wanted, but why bother, lol. ;)

Did I mention that I did the electrical too? :D

No worries about the release, we'll still be here when it gets done. ;)

I'm with Simon with this one. I could do the plumbing but I would never forgive myself if a leak escalated into serious damage (a bit like it has).

I am gonna get the leak fixed first then look into new plumbing and maybe new boiler as well. Just the drips for now maam, just the drips.

Dribble is becoming a word that strikes fear into my heart...hope your release is worth it and it may take my mind pff my own dribble.

Still, my plumbing is taking over this thread...sorry.

Back to dribble news.....

LOL, maybe you should switch to the Caligari stance of not announcing release dates. :p

So how's the plumbing going Splinters? :D

Well, a plumber packed it out last night (it is only dripping but has built up over what looks like years!) and is returning on Thurday AM to fit a 'lead-loc' which will marry the copper to lead properly. £100 the lot. That'll do me.

Later that day a nice man will be probably be quoting me thousands to put in a new combiboiler and fire and to replace all the lead piping. However, I am in no rush to do this once my leak is sorted.

Thanks for asking, shame about the renderer. I guess that is two 'dribbles' that have stopped....;) :D

Hey that's a pretty good deal if the plumber only charged you ~$150 USD :D it cost me about $900 to have a toilet hookup moved 2 inches and a new sink + fixture to be hooked up. Needless to say I learned how to do the plumbing myself after that...

We may pay the plumber to help with the Master Bath though since I'm going to already have enough work doing all the tile we're putting in and the new shower hookups are going to need all new piping plus a temperature regulator... dunno guess it depends on how busy I am with 3D projects.

Good luck on that boiler. Our AC went up last year and that ended up costing $15,000 since the only unit that would fit the space and have enough power was the top line Infinity system.... *sigh* but we did replace the hot water heater while we were at it... I think that was (only :p) $500 or so... LOL

Also you may want to look into Chelation for yourself and your family to remove the heavy metal toxicity from the lead:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelation_therapy

My father had it done for his heart disease and arterial blockages. He found that it significantly improved his circulation and mental acuity.

-I was going to mention a recent plumping success...but then I thought of something OT;) .

This is a heads up for anybody else who might be thinking of changing computer in the near future.

In anticipation of Simons final triumph, I was setting up the download from 3Delight and I noticed the following:

STEP 2: Get the "hostid"

In this step, a "hostid" has to be generated to obtain a license. The "hostid" is a unique identifier that binds a license to some computer. Please choose the computer that will act as your license server and execute the following steps."

Therefore, I think I will wait until we make the final decision about getting a new Home computer before installing: forewarned is forearmed...

CdeB...

Now back to plumbing....challenged by the fact that I work with HPLC (high pressure/performance liquid chromatography) on a daily basis I took to changing some taps rather than paying somebody....once I had found the stock cock which switched the water off:( it was relatively straight forward. But I symphathize with Splinters, I remember as a child a family meal in the kitchen, when water started to drip from the kitchen light. The water was traced back to a nail my Dad had put through a pipe in the attic several days before and 2 floors up! Several new ceilings later....

Good advice about the 3Delight license thing. I figure I'm going to wait until Simon releases before get 3Delight setup. Hopefully I'll have some time to mess with it, since it might be a good opportunity to do a render of some random old rusty pipes.... :D

Plumbing aside...I installed 3delight on my main machine and was about to do the same on my laptop. Can I not do this?

I use my laptop a lot but it has nowehere near the powere of my desktop which is my main rendering machine but I did want to try this renderer out on the move as it were.

Any thoughts on this?

As far as I can see 1 licence is limited to one machine -so you cannot do network rendering (i.e commercial production) It would be interesting to see whether they allow you to have one licence on 2 separate machines, as long as they are not used simultaneously (like trueSpace) (or even hold more than one licence). I kind of doubt it given how the host ID is set up. However, they do have forums where I am sure such questions could be fielded. The only problem I found was that you needed to be registered and I am not. But maybe Splinters you have already gone through that registration process in order to install 3Delight on your desktop?

after reading through this entire thread I can't help but imagine Simon sending an email every 8 hours to Splinters:

Uh so any news on that money?

Will it be soon?

I don't mean to push but I'm starting to get really excited thinking about that money!

I am very interested in that money. Just thought I'd say that.

:D

This does sound exciting Simon, looking forward to seeing its progress.

Ah, the irony...I wonder if other readers will get how clever this is...:D

Anyway, my plumbing emergency won't cost that much but the remedy might just cost a fortune but I am sure that I should be able to scrape together enough for this renderer if it is as good as it looks.

Still excited Simon.......
