If you have a chance, drop in to the truePlay Meetingroom (tp portal 1111) today and have a look at something I just made for us all.:D

Wow, that was weird! Brand new laptop (Celeron M440, 2GB RAM, XP) usually runs pretty nice although workspace is a bit of a no-no. Navigated to the live meeting room and it was like having a 486 trying to run Bioshock...
Oh, well....maybe it will be there tomorrow if I visit on my main PC. |

I'll bring it back tomorrow too.:p
There's WAY too much stuff in there at the moment, there was before I brought my new device in there too. Some subdivided stuff and that D3D TRT screen is also on (was unable to disconnect that camera - it causes quite a bit of lag if you look toward it at any point), plus there are speedmodeling contest entries, extra unknown objects all over the place like cubes and planes (even under the floor), etcetera.
On my ancient system it all works though with no more than an occasional 20 to 40 k lag, in spite of all the extra stuff all over in there.
anyway, it's something nobody's seen in shard space before for sure, so I'll bring it back tomorrow for others to discover and you can give it a go on your good home pc.
Thanks for taking a peek anyhow!:D

Uhm, I think I'm in there now.. in the live meeting room?
Of course I'm so new to it, that I don't know what you might have put there that is new.. ^_^
Also I notice my little chat window is not adjustable and I can't really make out who else might be online at the moment..
My sound is not set up yet.. I was just poking around and being curious :)
I like these areas a lot, but wish I could set my keyboard preferences for navigation once and for all.. it always reverts to wasd and I use arrow keys.. I'm left handed.. so prefer the arrow keys. I'm quite experienced at arrow navigation and not comfortable at all with wasd.. oh.. if anyone has suggestions ^_^
I'm going back to look more ;-) |

If you right-click the fpn button, panels area of stack shows buttons to select fwd, rvs, left'n'right. Click a button and enter your arrow keys as desired. Then you should feel right at home :) |

Looks very cool Mark!
There is a few things you can do to optimize your object. Remove Shadows and you will see a huge increase in performance. Remove some lights and it will increase performance so more. Also the Timer can have a very big impact. I am finding that setting the Period to 75 is optimal for my PC. Open up Task Manager while you make changes and see. Here is an example with above tweaks.
Note: Also textures can increase the size of the objects too. Emmanuel has suggested to keep them below 512 whenever possible. |

Thanks trueBlue!
I was working on this puppy off and on throughout the day along with a truePlay conversion job I'm working on for Theuns.
The original object you saw has been changed somewhat, I did away with the two original particle coud spheres and replaced them with two low-poly spheres containing many pyramids instead of uneven/unequal asteroids.
I also got rid of shadows and the projection lights and spent over three hours messing with optimization of this puppy in the truePlace Meetingroom today.
What it boils down to is the timer. There's simply no way around the fact that when one is inside FPN and uses a timer it will max your CPU instantly and lead to lag on the server. No apparent way around it unless you set the timer to enormous steps (200+) which makes the whole thing pointless. The problem is that the timers run off CPU rather than GPU, if it were the other way around the whole thing would be as smooth as glass with minimal if any CPU hits. Even the original runs smooth and looks great on my very lousy CPU at home, but online is just another ballgame altogether when it comes to timers.
I also met up with Frootee in there today and he got me somewhat sidetracked with something else which is very nice and coming your way.... it's in there now but I'll be removing it later tonight... a new ride.:D
If you or anyone else wants to see what's coming soon, drop into the truePlace Meetingroom (TP Portal 1111) within an hour of this post... and see something... unexpected...;)
Thanks,

Hi butterpaw,
Looks like Norm got you squared away on setting up your arrow keys, and you'll often find Norm (who has three ID's in there: Developer1 / Developer2 / and CaliNorm), trueBlue, Asem, Frootee, jfield (greenthunder), Stan, MarkO (my name in there), and others in there working on things from time to time. In fact more and more lately we all seem to be migrating in that direction since many of the cutting edge things we experiment on with trueSpace Scripting need to be tested in that environment exhaustively before making them public.
Just in the last 7 days there were a few such "little things;)" being tested and developed in there like:
1) Private Chat Rooms for use during large shared space meetings (which also allow semi-private conversations to be conducted between individuals working inside the Link Editor together in realtime without leaving the LE)
2) Objects which appear on Avatar approach and welcome you by name
3) Working Special Effects Avatar Teleporters
4) Custom Avatar locking research (to enable avatars to ride fast and / or winding vehicle paths while being able to still look all around and yet be firmly attached to their vehicles during their ride).
5) Prototype (and VERY fast) Avatar Vehicles.
All in all, a typical week.:D
It's a very good place to "get your feet wet" in relation to trueSpace Scripting and it's potentials for both online and offline activity development of all kinds. More importantly to me though, it happens to be fascinating and fun!:D
See you there sometime,
