Hi folks. I remember back when using 6.6, I could select an object in the scene; for example, a spotlight, and then select an icon that would allow me to see the scene from the viewpoint of the spotlight. I forgot that icon, and was hoping it is still available on the Workspace side.
Does anyone remember that icon, what it looks like? I am hoping that the capability of "any object can be a camera in truespace" still holds.
Any and all help in this would be Most Appreciated!!

Not sure this was a 'standard' icon...maybe a plug in?
I made all the tS7/7.5 icons and this does not ring a bell... |

Thanks splinters. In 6.6 it was not a plugin;
We had icons for: front view, left view, right view, top view, and bottom view. There was another icon we could use, where we would first select an object, then select the icon, to see the view from the point of the object. I just can't remember the name and terminology. I don't have ts here in front of me; I'll try it when I get home.
Thanks though!

I don't doubt it for a minute but I converted every tS6.6 icon (as far as I know) into the new tS7 'look'.
EDIT: Seems to be the camera icon. I put a spotlight into the scene then hit the camera button. Got a view through the spotlight...weird. |

Yes. That is exactly what I mean.
Caligari advertised this for some time. Any object can be a camera in truespace. This is useful for aiming spotlights, for example. You select the spotlight, then click the camera icon. Then you can aim your spotlight as you wish.
Thanks for checking that splinters. :)

I used to use the aim the spotlight like a camera all the time and wish it comes back! You could change the diameter of the light while looking through it. The controls of the lighting in WorkSpace are not as good.
Here is something weird. Put a spotlight in a scene and with your viewpoint looking down on spotlight move mouse up and the spotlight moves away. Swing viewpoint up looking at the spotlight from below move mouse up and spotlight come toward you. What's going on there? |

Hi Steinie. I am not sure if splinters means he selected a spotlight, then the camera icon, from the Workspace, or from the Model view. If it's not there, then maybe we can add it through scripting.
We are working on a related project; I'm learning as I go along! I might be able to make this happen if it does not already... or, I might start saying....
STAN! Help ME Out Here! :D

I checked real quick and as far as I can tell, Workspace side doesn't let you use an object as a camera.
But you could group a camera with an object or link the camera's and object's matrix values in the LE depending on what you're trying to do.
For example if you want the camera to move with the object, then link the position values but not the rotation. You could then have the camera linked to "look at" a different object. Then if you animate the 2 objects, the camera with move with the one but turn to look at the other. |

Thanks Jack. I will work on that tonight. I want to do this
through scripting, so I can connect and disconnect based on a timer or some other event.

Haven't tried this but it might work - have you tried using Stan's 'View To Camera' plugin/scripty/thing that's in the Garage? I think you might be able to select the object from the dropdown, select it and use it as a camera rather than create a new camera. Even if you can't, it's a cool plug in to have! |

Thanks WWW. I will check that out. It'd be nice if that's what Stan's plugin can do.
