Hah! My PC is so slow I don't like to ask it to play a cd at the same time as running truespace in case it slows it down even more!

But I will sometimes fire up the second comuter in the room to play cds or filch a stereo from another room; in which case the music will maybe depend on the mood - might be restful and melodic (e.g Eva Cassidy) or hard-rockin' (Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith, etc!)....:D

Unless the kiddies are in bed and then it's quiet as possible...:(

I usually don't listen to anything while working. Once in a while I will though. Beatles, Beck, Portishead, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy), Bauhaus, Metallica, The Creatures. Those are the main ones.

Well right now I'm lucky if I can get my stupid sorry excuse for a DVD burner to even install software from a CD. So now I have to spend my little free time installing another.... time to pay the Reaper, DVD Burner! I've got a couple spares that I think work...

but if I listen to tunes online while modelling, it's usually techno / dance club / trance music.

Weird I'm not an animator but I prefer silence when I work. I get so focused I wouldn't hear it anyway.

Latest CDs - Beastie Boys (The Mix-Up) and the new Crimea, Maximo Park.

Ususally though, if we have music on it is BBC 6 Music (http://www.bbb.co.uk/6music). A great station :)

But normally we don't have music on because we forget to put some on! doh!

Edit: Just realised that 'we' sounds odd - I don't mean the royal 'we' or anything - my partner is usually on her laptop in the same room as my tS computer...

i think thats was their point, silence lets you focus on what you're doing. One day i'm going to try it.....

I tried that whole silence thing, but it wasn't nearly distracting enough. Now I've got Oasis, Coldplay, Keane, Dropkick Murphys, etc. to focus my attentions. Just not on what I wanted them to be focused on. Also, I can't help but shout along to Dropkick Murphys - Shipping up to Boston: "I'm shipping up to Boston (whooo-ooo-ooooh), I'm shipping up... TO FIND MY WOODEN LEG!

The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Bruce Springsteen, and Richard Thompson.....and if none of that works I just hum. But then again, there's still Bonnie Riatt, Stevie Nicks, and Joan Jett.

I also don't listen to music when I'm using tS. Mostly because I'm not sure if my computer could handle it. Single processor, no hyper threading. :( Even if I could though I probably wouldn't as I get distracted easily. I can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Walking and chewing gum is even too much for me.

If I did though, I would likely listen to Jazz, World Music, or Pop Rock.

If I am modeling, I hear rock music from radio, but if I code I need absolute silence.

Interesting thread for sure!:)

As for me it depends on what I'm planning to model, but I've found that actually planning the music ahead of the modeling makes a huge difference for me in overall workflow speed and sometimes overall design style.

For me it's usually:

Ry Cooder, Santanna, Aerosmith, Chicago, Yes, The Doors, Jimmie Spheeris, Jimmie Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, The Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Steppenwolf, and the Greatful dead.

Between all of those I can set up almost any needed atmosphere just fine.

Cool suggestions here from everybody, I think I'll be expanding my inventory accordingly!

Hey, I really enjoyed reading what people to listen to.. I don't usually listen to music.. because it sets off another creative function in me.. i.e. I'll either analyze or start composing - I just pay too much attention .. but my music tastes are quite eclectic, and I like a lot of what y'all have listed.

However, when painting in oils, drawing, or digital art and the bit of modeling I do so far, I play audio books and radio series.. the stories out of ZBS media are a favorite, books by Andre Norton, Roger Zelazny and others.. they are usually ones I've heard many times.. so I can zone out and in without disorientation and the familiar hum of voices seems to help me focus..

ok, so I'm really weird.. :D

... and silence is fine too..

^_^

The music I listen to when modeling are from some of my favorite animes. Cowboy Bebop, Read or Die, Stellvia, and Princess Tutu are the ones I listen to the most. I find having background music helps me to keep relaxed when modeling. When I'm relaxed I'm able to model longer.:)

I'm with Liger ZERO,

Ghost in the Shell, Innuyasha, Eureka Seven, Macross, various Yoko Kanno stuff (including Cowboy Bebop). Of course you can only listen to that for so long

so then....

Cold, Tool, 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park, Bucket Head.

And when I'm in the mood for soundracks there's:

X-men, Half-Life, Last of the Mohicans, etc...

:D

@Butterpaw:

when I was a kid I loved reading the Roger Zelazny books.

I share the workspace with my wife. When we work together it is the local radio. When I am alone it is Dylan, Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Stones and some dutch bands that have not made it yet to global recognition :D

Music is essential when on the pc at home to drown out phone, wife doing housework etc Mostly rock but I'll listen to anything except rap. Being really ancient I also like stuff going back to the seventies, well okay, sixties as well.

Talking of great radio, try www.radiocaroline.co.uk.

Lol, Jack,

I enjoy those too, was debating whether to admit to my addiction to Adult Swim...

I have Roger Zelazny reading "A Night in the Lonesome October" (on tape, sadly - I need to convert it) - it has since disappeared from the library (broken or stolen) and from nearly everywhere else! Saw one once for sale on E-bay for $200!

Unfortunately Adult Swim usually has the dubbed versions :p I did catch a few episodes of Bleach on the tv though and they did an ok job with that series, the fan subs are better though. ;)

Don't think I've read that particular Zelazny book. Mainly I read his Amber series and a few other fantasy titles like Doorways in the Sand. But that was something around 15-20 years ago..... lol. :)

Admit you had me a bit puzzled there - I know of a book by the same name, but by horror author Richard Laymon. Having looked them up, I see they are completely different books, but the Zelazny one does sound quite interesting so I'll have to look out for it!
