Hi Folks.
I'm working a new image in TrueSpace 7.5 and it's a rather special project (no details till it's finished!), but what I need is a tree. Part of the image has a tree to the side of it. Modelling one seems to a nightmare task so can anyone point me in the direction of a tree model that I can use for this project?
Thanks. |

If it is going to be a static image, you can just use a photograph of a tree, mask out everything but the tree, then use an alpha transparency map on a plane in trueSpace. If your 2D program can make shadows, you can do that as well in the same layer or make it a separate layer.
Here's a freebie, it's a down and dirty solution, not 3D but okay if you are in a hurry and need a tree. The file is a png file 32 bit applied to a plane.
First file is png, the second is unrendered in tS7.51 and the third is rendered. [edit, oops evidently I rendered the second pic, I'll replace it if you want)
The nice thing about alpha masks is that they are very low poly count once applied to a plane. :)
This one could use some touching up, shadows - highlighting etc. |

Hi Paul !
Well what I can do is point you to 2 links that you should look
at 1. treegenerator .Version 1.3 is free
http://www.treegenerator.com/
2 . much more realistic is arbaro .... here is the link
http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/
It is very easy to make a tree by pushing 2-3 buttons.
Another good source is vue ! I can make you one if all the
other possibilities dont work for you !
Here are some free samples from treegenerator:

Great stuff indeed! Thanks for all the replies. I've managed to nab a few tree models which I think will work with this scene, really appreciate the help. I'll share the finished image with the community once I'm finished. It's a project that I'm compelled to bring to life... |

Thanks, JamesMC, for going through the trouble of doing this tutorial for me. If the 3D model trees don't work with the scene, I'l give this technique a try. |

Well, I figured you didn't need the tutorial as you are much more experienced in 3D than my newbie self. :D
But others watching the thread might want to know about Alpha masking.
I hate reading a thread and people talk about "alien" 3D stuff and I have no clue what they are talking about, because they use abbreviated form of geek talk or "code" words. I look at the post with a blank stare and move on to something I know. :) |

I see you've already found some, but you're welcome to these 3d trees I found some time back on the net - they were free, but I can't remember where I got them... |

not sure if you have bryce6, it does trees pretty well and it can also export them along with rocks and terrains |

Bryce 5 is being given away on magazine DVD's as is Carrara 5, both if which IIRCC have tree labs that can export to other 3D formats.
Cheers
