I am pleased to announce the first animator's club meeting in shared space for Saturday, September 29. The time wil be 12 noon pst/3 pm est/8 pm UK time.
It will be held in the scriptorium room in shared space for now. This is because the live meeting room's ground is too high so if people drop their keyframed animations in there the ground level will be below the floor. When this is fixed we will move to the meeting room for future meetings. The scriptorium room can be accessed by setting your network node to 1212 on tpportal in truespace 7.51. Or you can follow the link placed on an easel in the live meeting room if you don't want to change your network settings or are in trueplace.
Meetings will be held biweekly.
The topic for our first meeting will appropriately be bouncing balls, since is is usually the first lesson taught in animation. If you have the time before the meeting, please try your hand at making a bouncing ball animation for everyone to watch and discuss.
Here are a couple of links to help you get started:
http://www.idleworm.com/how/anm/01b/bball.shtml
http://www.frankandollie.com/PhysicalAnimation.html
If this is beyond your reach at this point don't worry about it. Depending on everyone's understanding of the keyframe editor in ts we can spend some time reviewing it's features. We can exchange tips and tricks about it too.
Following a review of the keyframe editor and viewing and discussing bouncing balls, we will make a group project working on a bouncing ball animation to save as an object to share on the forum.
Following that we can try to pick a name for our animation club and discuss things we can do in the future. After that if people still have time to stick around maybe we can make up another group project we can do in a reasonable amount of time, and have a freeform discussion of animation.
I hope many of you can attend. If you think you can make it please make a post here that you'll be there so I can get an idea of what to expect.
Thanks everyone. I hope we can make this club a success. |

I regret I won't be able to join you on Saturday afternoons, as that is time my 84-year-old mom and I spend together :D,
but I wish you all a fun and beneficial meeting :jumpy: |

Hi 3dfrog,
I just wanted to congratulate you on this initiative. I'll be there, although I know zero about animation in general I do hope to learn a few things there and appreciate you making these shared space meetings open to folks like me who know zip about creating animations.:p
Since I now have a bit of personal experience at arranging shared space events myself, I also wanted to share with you something I learned in the process which may be helpful, and that is the fact that most people who will show up at any given shared space gathering will do so without letting you know in advance that they intend to by posting that intention before such meetings. I think mostly it's just that they don't want to run the chance of saying so only to have some other priority potentially arise which may prevent them from attending.
So if you get very few replys in this thread from folks saying they'll be there, don't be discouraged... you may well get inundated with Avatars showing up at meetingtime (and for an hour or two after it starts) as is often the case with every shared space meeting, don't let it discourage you.:)
Also don't be surprised if the group grows in quantum progression at every meeting, that also tends to happen quite naturally.:)
See you there and thanks!

Thanks 3dvd. When I opened the thread this morning and saw 2 replies my heart sunk. Thanks for letting me know that. Also the forum went down for a large part of the day after I posted so I guess thats why there's not a lot of response too. Of course the show will still go on. Even if its only 2 people I will do my best to make it fun. I am persistent and will let the club grow over time. |

For other meetings, I've found the posted countdown clock helped me keep track of the upcoming meeting time... perhaps you could post one for this too - I don't know how this is done but I bet Norm or 3dv Dude would know...
sure wish I could divide myself in two, so that I could attend :D

Hi 3dfrog. Email TomG; let him know. Also, you can add it to the Calendar. The Calendar link is in that line with New Posts, CaliArchive, User CP, Blogs (NEW), etc.
HTH!
I will try to make it. I have some thoughts on procedural (scripted) mesh deformation (remember the flag script?) That can be modified to squash and stretch a sphere, though I have not done it yet. You just have to know how a sphere is constructed. Access the poles separately, then the row of verts for one radial curve, then the next radial curve(longitudinal points: a circle of longitudes are all at the same latitude), etc.

I wanted to make this one but cannot. My Wife is a Teacher and there is something planned today at their school. So count me in next week. This Club will surely grow so the first meeting will be your Pilot. |

This sounds like a great chance to learn more about animation even if it would be way over my head! Unfortunately I am in the field this month and while I have internet access (it's nice to be in communications) most of things are blocked. Oh well, I hope the group is a big success. |

Thanks for the responses and tips folks. Sorry some of you can't make it this time. The next one is in 2 weeks so hope you can make it then.
Attached is an animated bouncing bal object I started. Unfortunately keyframing scale is eratic and sometimes doesnt keyframe at all. If anyone can take a look at this and mess around with keyframing scale it would be appreciated. Maybe frootee will be able to help with the thing he was saying about procedural animation that is over my head :).
See ya later this afternoon. |

Yeah, I know that feeling myself. I was having exactly the same reaction one day here to a thread I started about one of the Tuesday Night meetings where I wasn't seeing the quantity of replies I had expected at all.
Even right up to meetingtime there were only a few replies and when I showed up there were only a few people there. Soon afterward people began trickling in here and there though and before long it turned out to be a pretty large group.
That time it was Froo who came to my rescue. He sent me a PM saying to expect that and he was definitely right. As he put it, even the "Thursday Night Live!" events which had big crowds had announcement threads where people didn't reply much at all until after the meetings... they just show up.
So you never know. Being the first Saturday meeting it could be tiny or huge just for that reason alone, but either way just plan on having a good time no matter what and that's exactly what will happen.:)
See ya there,

It's hard for me to make a commitment these days as I have "drive by" grandchildren. :)
It can be they stop by for breakfast or pop in right about the same time as the ten o-clock evening news is starting. (The reason I fully dress now instead of wandering around in bathrobe.) :D
I'll try to make it to the meetings, but no guarantees as the rogue grandchildren will just show up on a moments notice. :) |

Good news. I ran into frootee in shared space and he figured out the scale issue. It was just the ball starting out at some weird angle. Just me goofing up as usual lol. So we have squash and stretch yay!
Attached is the bouncing ball if you wanna check it out. |

I found a good ball bounce expression on the web. Both bounce and squash/stretch. It uses decaying sine waves. :) It was intended for flash I think but I adapted it to trueSpace and added a couple of things to it. It's actually a pretty decent ball bouncing script (fairly realistic) and seeing as it's procedural, it's completely parametric and reusable. I'll bring it today. :) |

Cool!
Sounds like you guys are going to have a blast! So far there's 3dfrog, Dele, and 3dv, committed... well, not committed but... well, oh nevermind. :D
And some folks may be able to make it, but may drop in. These meetings get addictive you know!
Have fun and I am glad I could help!
Oh BTW would you guys also please take snapshots and give a rundown of the meeting, maybe even post the other objects you make? Sounds like Dele was thinking of a similar thing I was thinking of; but he's got it done already! Nice!
Later,

Excellent!
Looks like 5 minutes to go so I better go put my cone on and join you guys there!
Remember folks, the meeting today is in the new Scriptorium room of the truePlace server.
The truePlace Meetingroom (tpportal 1111) has an easel there with an image on it you click to enter the Scriptorium where the meeting is. (there's also a link on the linkbar there now which looks like a yellow necklace)
Or you can set your Network in the trueSpace7.51 Link Editor (top level) to "tpportal" instead of the default "tsportal" and the port number is 1212 instead of the deafault 1109.
See ya there!

Wow!
A massive success this meeting! Lots of folks popping in there and lots of fun and informative stuff happening!
Here's a screengrab of a surprise development from trueBlue there just now too!
It's still happening now folks - come on by while you can! |

Well I think the meeting went well for our first one. I showed my keyframed bouncing ball animation. Then dele showed a great procedural bouncing ball animation. Similar results with different approaches. The advantage of dele's though is the way it can all be modified through scripts. When he first showed it it was bouncing in place then not too much longer he scripted it to move in space. Quite impressive indeed.
I then did a little lesson on the keyframe editor for those who didn't know much about it, which I will be happy to do for others at future meetings if they want.
We spent about an hour talking about animation then we went into kind of freeform chat. Norm introduced us to blogs on the forum. I think it was trueblue who was modifying avatars.
I'm not sure exactly how many of us there were, maybe 7 or so. Which I think is a pretty good turnout to get started.
Jane made a good suggestion to make the next topic animated cameras, so that will be our next meeting. I'll post more about it in about a week.
So attached is a couple of screen grabs and a scene with me and dele's objects. To see dele's ball bounce click the active box in the le. You'll see it. To play mine press play in animation editor. it is 48 frames so set it to play at least that many.
Thanks a lot for making it a success folks. |

Hi Y'all,
Sorry I didn't make the 1st meeting, but I hope to make it soon.
I was just wondering if anyone knew what became of the 10secondclub ? And if maybe something along those lines might be a suitable monthly animation club project? Or is something like this already going on that I don't know about?
I know it may be a bit more advanced topic than what Froggie has in mind for the ongoing club meetings and I do not mean to distract from that at all. I just wondered if anyone was interested in such a thing.
Thanks,
Opie |

I think I heard that the 10 second club closed down (google might have more answers), but there's a new 11 second club, where I'm hoping to enter some anims eventually :P http://www.11secondclub.com/ |

MattMatt! how's it going sir? I hope all is good with you.
Thanks for the link...I'll check it out. Still, it might be the kind of monthly thing we might be able to do locally here too.

That 11sec club looks great. I might have to give that a try sometime. Looks like a good way to win the Caligari external gallery contest too. :) |

Hey Dele
It is bi weekly. I will post an announcement during the week. Remember the topic is camera animation. |
