Hi

I'm messing around with the lightworks renderer in model side. I can't get rid of the circle of shadows that the image based light and the global environment light make.

Here is a little animation with global environment:

it is pretty noticable. Dribble doesnt make a circle of shadows with this type of lighting, so why does lightworks?

Attached is another image with image based light, you can see how bad the circle of shadows is.

How do you get rid of this horrible thing? the attached image even has shadows turned off on the light and still makes them.

Have you tried increasing the resolution of the ibl?
This will distribute more 'virtual lights' over the surface of the ibl. It's widget looks like a ring, but it's actually an invisible sphere with lights on the verts.
Increasing the resolution, like increasing the resolution of a primitive, creates more verts/lights and smoother shadowing.
The following examples show how to select the ibl in a top view, then click 'render object'. The middle image is an ibl with a resolution of 8- note it's blocky appearance, thus less virtual lights and faster rendering time. The bottom image has a resolution of 64- it's smoother, and consequently will have more lights/smoother shadows/slower rendering time.
Rendering the ibl as an object also lets you see how the image you assign is laid out- useful for lining up specific light/dark areas of the texture in relation to the objects you are trying to illuminate with it.
Screencaps from tS6.6; your results/panels/settings in 7 may vary.

Increase the number of samples. What's irritating about the Lightworks method of environment lighting is that changing the number of samples can totally change the shadows/lighting; with dribble, you're just changing the amount of noise in the shadows.

Well I cranked the samples up to the max at 500 for the environment light under lightworks. You can still see traces of that awful circle of shadows. I don't like how the model looks faceted and shiny too in this lightworks render. Not what you would expect from an environment light. Cranking up those samples made the renderer really slow, it was ridiculous.

Dribble on the other hand, same scene, and results I'd expect from environment light in about a minute. Dribble also handles antialiasing better. I was able to use adaptive antialiasing for the dribble render, but to get decent edges under lightworks I had to use 3x antialiasing, which slowed the render even more.

2 bananas for dribble

1 minute vs 66 minutes? There's a nice ad :D
