Why nobody wins is in my Blog. Thanks, Prodigy! That is a great Blog entry. Your point is right on target, light may not always be the predominant element and I do tend to lean to more formal compositions.
However you got close to winning a few times, do not give up, you grew as a 3D artist so much over the last year!
Larger point is that we do not have a winner two months in a row and I do see great artwork in work in progress so maybe we are just spreading too thin. I would encourage you guys to submit some of the great artwork in progress images to monthly gallery, they get a lot more exposure there! |

Whatever happened to the idea of having two competitions, one chosen by Roman and one by forum members??? |

Always a tricky subject to discuss especially if you have entered. However you dress it up there is always that element of 'why did I not win then?' in the back of your mind.
I have won a few times, been a runner up and had many honorable mentions as well as a few profiles too so I am not worried that my stuff might not be 'up to scratch'. Like Steinie, I am more interested in the story, especially as most of my work is book illustrations, but I do try to look at lighting and composition too.
Winning for me is a treat and the prize is often passed onto a student so they can get hold of tS7 too...I am just happy for the exposure...:D |

Sorry to bring everybody down and I hope I don't start a flame, but I think this last gallery isn't all that good.
I know, I know, I should speak when I send my own image for the gallery.
Still, constructive criticism will only get you so far. You may need someone to tell you "It's crap, do it again!". I'm not saying the images in the gallery are that bad, but most of them need more work.
Oh, and read this (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=49327&postcount=1) if you don't like what I said. :D |

I read it, don't like what was said and would indeed like to see the current work of artists who make that comment. I would not take technical advice from someone whose work I thought was not technically as good as mine, I wouldn't take money advice from a door to door salesman...why would I? But another point of view, yes. I would take advice from a 10 year old if I though it was valid. And I would hope that a inspirational 'master' might be somewhat subtle and supportive in commenting on the work of aspiring artists rather than taking a condescending approach to dismissing it...if I were to meet one of course...
I post WIP's for advice and the feddback allways helps to improve my techniques, lighting, composition etc. but art is very personal and subjective. You could say that the modelling or lighting could be improved and hopefully suggest how too but you cannot simply say it is crap.
I would very much like to hear you thoughts on how I could improve my submitted image within it's context and target market, not just how you would have done it. And that is a sincere request-I am not being sarcastic.
While you are at it you may decide that another image from the book should not have been awarded a runner up prize some month's ago.
I am not taking this personally, I like my work and so do many others, but I am standing up for anyone who enters into this gallery with the hope of winning, or at least some positive feedback.
If you think that sort of feedback should be for WIP only, then bear in mind Roman just requested that more WIP's be entered into the gallery... |

Here we go... :( Should have kept my e-mouth shut.
splinters, I know your work, I look at your wips in the forum quite often, even if I don't comment. I like your image.
The special recognition images and Bernard Haseloff's render show promise.
Robert Steinman's circus image is funny and I can accept it because I know this is his style (the other one I don't understand).
As for the others... they don't really agree with me. This makes the whole gallery look strange to me.
Maybe I don't understand the creator's vision? It's possible. |

That Robert Steinman is a Knuckle Head!;):D
Accu, I'm sure the works will get better as the current batch of Artist develop their skills. I wonder why the Steam Rifle was never entered, thought for sure that would be the winner last month.
There are LOTS of users here that haven't been entering, do I need to name names?....(you know who you are):) |

S'no problem, I am not 'personally' offended by any comments and I already agreed about some of the works and the general 'bleeding' of talent to other programs.
I just thought it was a little unfair to aim negative comments at all the works in the gallery...nuff said.
Let's move on and see what next month brings. This thread might certainly prompt some more quality entries...;) |

Accu, Steinie's other entry is for Halloween, a holiday celebrated in the U.S. October 31st. It's all about pumpkins, pumpkin carving, candy for the kids, etc.
So that image is referencing that holiday.
I say this since you indicated you did not understand it. |

If it was me voting it would be splinters cloud in first, and steinie's circus in second. I think there should have been a winner, but it's roman's decision, I guess he has his reasons. I would like to see a winner every month. |

I have my own views but I don't want to fan any flames so I'm keeping my trap zipped! I just wanted to correct that piece of information. Halloween (or Allhallows Eve to be totally correct, the evening before All Saints Day) is not US specific. It is celebrated (in slightly varying formats) worldwide, the traditions going way, way beyond the start of modern day America. |

Aw shucks 3Dfrog, nice of you to think that. However, I knew I wouldn't win for at least two reasons;
1. A similar style image was runner up recently and it was used in some Caligari promo stuff.
2. Tom gave me an illustration profile which was going live around the same time as the gallery results and that image is also in there.
I also think having an actual page (with text) kinda throws a spanner in there too but I know Roman actually likes my stuff..I guess that is why I still do work on the UI for him...:D
Like I said before, happy for the exposure...:D |

i told myself i was going to enter something this month but never got anything worth showing done
Splinters: If you's have had your new one finished in time (the ine with the bot looking out the window) i think you may have won it, that's a cracking pic.
Burnart: your entry was great, lots of style to it, i loved the sky. |

Well, this has opened up a fair few viewpoints. I guess the bottom line is, Roman did not pick a winner or a runner up so there must be some substance in the idea that they were not 'up to par'. Hard to admit it to myself but I have tweaked that image slightly since I posted it so there is always room for improvement.
I remember a similar outcry a while ago over Thomas Cuillo's winning image. Now Thomas is an ex-student of mine who I introduced to tS so I have nothing bad to say about him ;) but I remember the argument over his image being a credible winner. If you cannot remember it was a ski slope. I kinda liked it...

Ironically I got a special recognition that month with some rather daft pig posters while Madmouse's image only got an honorable mention despite being excellent. |

Hi Witchy. That's true; I was just mentioning that because the original poster indicated he did not understand the image. If my wife saw that she would've corrected me too! :) She's far more worldly and knowledgable about world history than I am...
Congratz to all the folks whose entries made it to the galleries this month!

Personally, I thought they were all pretty good. If I can do something even 1/2 as good as any of those then I'd be very happy. |
