Nice tests splinters. Thanks for sharing.
I did post a little test of my own earlier but no-one ese has done so. Did I get the wrong end of the stick or is this a splinters pics only zone?;) |

I'd post some too, but haven't had any time lately. :(
Glad to see Splinters taking up the gauntlet! |

I'm loving seeing these tests too. I'd post more of my own but I've been code-focused lately. |

Nope, only as much as I am the only one drinking in the public bar for the moment. Maybe I should share what scenes I have got so you can all play around and see what you come up with? I started the thread to encourage everyone to have a play...so far I have provided the main course and pudding...
I am no expert in dribble, just getting my money's worth...:D
Fascinated by displacement mapping-it really adds extra depth to the render (excuse pun) and while SSS is not working as I would 'expect' I am getting some really great and unexpected effects. |

Of course if Dribble sells well, development will continue apace and that benefits all dribble owners. For that reason Simon, you are welcome to any of this stuff if it helps you; scenes or images...:) |

A fairly simple (see unimpressive) experiment with HDRI in dribble..... |

Sorry if I appear to be 'hogging' this thread (pepe in-joke for stalwarts) but I do find Dribble experiments to be very 'bite size'. I simply load in an object, mess with settings and hit render, move on to next experiment and repeat ad infinum.
This is not new for me and I did the same with Vray beta's but of course, I couldn't post them. Dribble however is not under any NDA and I am happy to share my findings here...good or bad...
And on that note I am gonna play with GI and caustics next... |

Lunch break is nearly over...but I am sure non-dribble owners (are there any?) must be curious how it compares to LW and Vray. So, here are three renders...same scene, same textures/materials, same light setup. Now I know you need to tweak lights and materials between render engines for best results but can you tell which one is which?
No changes in scene at all just switch render engines and hit render to file.
For fun facts, one render took about a minute, one took less than 30 seconds while the other took around 5 minutes. All have HDRI lighting but only two have GI where it was available i.e. not in the LW engine... |

I'll give it a go
No. 1 (shiny bowl) = LW
No. 2 (darker render) = Dribble/3Delight
No. 3 (shiny Apples) = Vray
am I close?

No. 1 (shiny bowl) = Lightworks (the bowl's wood texture is more detailed because it's a procedural texture, and I think it's shiny because it has a second layer to mimic a varnish, also the lack of GI makes it somewhat more "plasticky" as a whole)
No. 2 (darker render) = V-Ray (somewhat splotchy GI calculation - but smoother)
No. 3 (shiny Apples) = dribble/3Delight (superior texture filtering - the only one that can handle those lines without breaking, but noisier)
This is a nice comparison that shows how different renderers handle the same scene. |

Both Simon and Prodigy get it...Vray in a direct comparison looks about the worst and Dribble looks suprisingly good...but it was the 5 minute render with LW under a minute and Vray around 30 seconds. If I ramped up the samples it would have been much cleaner but I wanted a direct comparison...:D
Dribble does look pretty good there though...;) |

Vray in a direct comparison looks about the worst
Could you please rerender and post the Vray render with adequate(non underexposed) light and higher settings please !
I dont think Vray would turn out that bad .... !

LOL!!! HEHEHE ....
It doesnt look like the light direction looks the same ... I know .. I know...
its HDR ... but still look under the dish !Vray light comes from the right side
and the others from the top

I noticed that too (the light direction being different), I actually prefer the V-Ray setup. I know for a fact that the V-Ray environment lighting doesn't match the Lightworks one, I'm pretty sure that dribble 1.0 would have given the same results as V-Ray in terms of lighting, before I changed it to match Lightworks. |

Could that be a feature ... to turn it to LW or to VRAY with a checkbox ?

So.....I got 1 out of 3! YAY! Do I win anything?!? :jumpy:
Opie
p.s. I have not had the chance to play with Dribble since the last release, so I just assumed the darker image was Dribble. I am VERY pleased to see that I was wrong. |

Whoah guys...just a game. Try rendering a beautiful LW scene using Virtualight and expect to be real disappointed.
Same with Vray if you expect to simply change render engine and get magic. Scenes need to be tweaked to get the best out of each engine but I posted these for the benefit of relative newcomers to show how each engine handled the scene without any changes.
With a little more time the Vray scene could look stunning but that was not the point.
However, like Opie, I was pleasantly suprised to see the dribble render looking about the best of the three (tone that shininess down though ;)).
Bear in mind that is was set up as a dribble scene first...not sure a Vray scene rendered in Dribble would be quite as good...but it is nice to have the choice and my investment in dribble is already paying off.
Still, this was fun and I hope it will encourage more people to experiment with dribble.
P.S
I will post the scene just as soon as I fire up my laptop...:D |

But remember that LW is part of your tS package while Vray is a relatively expensive add-on. Although worth it in my opinion...:D |

I´m pretty happy to have many render options and I even count Vue
as a render option. I come to a point with what I render that I just
try out all what I have sometimes when it becomes difficult.
I need most of my renders for Photoshop work sometimes even just
isolated objects. Today I started off in Kerkythea and when I figured out that all versions failed...for the look I just went on to the next...after 5 trys I got it.
So your test was pretty interesting...and shows we need options.
By the way ...did you try if all the renders showed the objects in same place ?? Would be interesting to see if they would give even more looks when
placed as layers on top of each other in Photoshop !

Well it looks like there could be good news !
The renders you posted fit one on top of the other !
If one blends them in Photoshop ....layer on top
of layer they give an infinite amount of possibilities
see the combo of all the three here.... |

Nice one Rayman, I never tried that...mind you I was in a rush. Makes a nice render, perhaps when dribble supports multipass renders too we will have more options again. As for Vray supporting it........ |

Nice apples Rayman - they look just like the plastic ones a shop near work sells.
I'll post another - here is a planetoid landscape rendered using dribble with displacement mapping (love it!) and a modicum of gi (64 samples) using a single local light. 600 x 450 pixels - only sad thing was it took over 2 hours to render! - although I did have the tS antialias set at 4 which always slows things down. Also the image map is 1024 x 1024 and was repeated 3 times in each direction. Again - that would have slowed things down.
(Edit: forgot the raytrace depth setting - tweaking it from 10 down to 2! That would speed things up.)
(2nd Edit: re rendered with the raytrace depth at 2 and it took 2hrs 41 mins. Didn't seem to speed things up at all!!) |

Ok guys, as requested here is the apple scene...try it in LW and dribble. I simply used the kitchen HDR that comes with tS7. Have fun...:D |
