Here is what I would love to see with dribble:

Blurry Reflection Shader

Fresnel Reflection/Refraction shader

Anisotropic Reflection Shader

Improvements to SSS shader including faster reflections possibly with support for glossy and fresnel refelction and a translucency control

Easy to use fur (coming yipeeee)

Layered material support

Mapped shader controls

Depth of field (does it do this already and if so how?)

Volumetric fog and other volume effects

AS I understand it 3Delight supports all of the above as part of the renderman specification.

BTW great work Simon Windmill as always - having fun with this one trying to see what it can do - currently I am making tomatoes with subsurface scattering effects hihi - I will post an image maybe... Every truspace user should buy this - another great plugin from the absolute master.

I'll be happy if I can render just a section of the screen. When I just want to see an area I have to render the whole thing and wait for it to get there.

You know what's funny? Nobody else except Emmanuel has asked me for an orthographic view that actually, you know, works :o So that's what I'm doing right now.

There are basically two groups of features, the "cool" things, such as fur and fancy shaders, and the "workflow" things, such as area rendering. Once I've wrapped up fur, I'll be focusing on more workflow issues.

Incidentally, the mapped reflectance shaders are already supported, and depth of field is in - just enable the post-process shader like you do with Lightworks. Perhaps the DOF settings should be moved to the dribble UI?

I think we should clarify Dribble's purpose to optimize its development.

To me, Lightworks is a very polyvalent render engine. It is fast and allows for the most common effects. It works for design, illustration, animation, movie special effects, architecture.
Its leaks are mostly in animation special effects (bad DOF & motion blur, no "mask" shader...), and architecture visualisation (no pretty GI).

VRay brings a very soft look to architecture renders thanks to its amazing global illumination. Its leaks are relative to Bridge limits (polygon conversion of NURBS, memory issues, no layers, too slow for animation)

And here comes Dribble & 3Delight.
It sounds like a polyvalent engine, but due to its texture management and format conversion, it is very slow with big scenes, with lots of texture files, objects and polygons.
In my opinion, it is THE render engine for movie special effects and animation :
- it has a "camera look" : its grainy shadows blend very well in video shootage, and does not look artificial like Lighworks.
- its DOF is very clean.
- its motion blur also looks very natural.

So, I think that Dribble development should focus on its strenght points.

Here is my wish list :

1. A new fast and easy tool for Depth of Field.

It should offer a null object or widget to indicate the focus point.
Basically, a left clic on that tool would add a null object in the scene.
The null object (in yellow) represents the focus point. At this point, the render will be neat.
The blur area (in orange) represents the blur area.

That tool will come in two flavors :
Autofocus and Manual Focus.

1- In Autofocus mode, the Distance value sets the distance in meters between the neat area and the maximum blur area represented by the orange sphere. The Blur Value sets the max intensity of blur effect.

2- In Manual mode, the Distance value sets the distance in meters between the neat area and the camera. The Blur Value sets the max intensity of blur effect.

What do you think ?

More wishes to come...

I second that Emmanuel, i'm working on a project now that's going to involve some animation and i'm torn between the rendering choices.

Lightworks has the advanage of being the one i'm most familiar with, vray is fast and looks great but lacks some of lightwaves features.

Dribble could become the peferct solution.

P.S. Any news on volumetrics?

I will try the reflectance, but when you said the mapped reflectance shaders are in did you mean layered with maps for layers or direct mapped reflectance with an image map used to control a channel - I guess I am being dumb here but a bit of advice on usage would be really helpful -still getting used to dribble in other areas hihi

Look forward to the render area option if you get it working and a working othographic projection will be a definitie boon.

loads of bananas to you

Crikey Emmanuel is that exact...because the one in tS7.5 is not...;)

What I want Dribble to have is what was

already promised and has been posponed !

What about objects as lights and what about

symbionts etc.

Plus I want caustics to be much more real !

So I am not realy after new features..... I want those

that were excluded from the last releases !

Oh, nothing's postponed there - the plan is to have the Simbiont support and objects-as-lights in the next version. Those things are not a lot of development work.

Is that release 1.03 ?

You can get an exact ortho in Modeler. Here, I created it manually, but one could make a plugin to script the tasks and get that view in one clic.

Any idea when the workspace version of Dribble will be released?

I don't have a lot of time to play with TS, and I don't want to spend time in the Model side if I don't have to. It's fine for those users who already know the model side, But I basically started with TS 7 and would rather just use the workspace side and move forward. I know everything hasn't been ported over model-->workspace, but I can't help but feel that the model side is learning yesterdays technology.

So I've been holding off buying Dribble until there's a workspace version.

Cheers

Honestly, I don't expect a fully capable Workspace version for some time. It is planned - of course - but I can't give any timeframe.

Thanks, I'll just expect it when I see it and look forward to it in the future.

hahahahahaha

Turns out I've had to totally rewrite the way all objects are sent to the renderer to make this possible.

That is not a problem for someone with your talent SIW ;)

I wish to know programming to make my own render engine

I hope we will reward you with some nice renders with it then !

Those features are just high priority for me !

Ok..gonna ask the obvious question. One what is meant by the ortho view? Second I have the Simbiont TS shaders. What does Simbiont mean? I see SIW used that same word. Is he referring to the Darktree program?
