I wonder if there would be any interest in a new Contest like the old Da Da World Contest. This should be of interest to any new user of trueSpace since the objects are supplied. The idea would be to have 12 objects donated by all of us. Then the Artist would create a scene and render using some or all of the 12 objects from the same library. The emphasis would be lighting, layout, originality, etc.
Caligari could run the contest or some kind soul here could do it as well. I know there is a lot going on but I do see a need for an activity which gets the new user evolved.
(Edit: another spelling blunder...INVOLVED...thanks Splinters)
I'll throw this idea out there to see the interest level. New users, nows your chance to comment too.
Here is a link to the original contest back then...

I think it's a great idea Steinie!
Do we start compiling a list of items to donate?
We could also just grab stuff from the truespace libraries ( or would that be a violation of the purchase agreement? ) if so, then we just donate our own creations. But then again, the stuff we generate comes from libraries anyways: textures, lights, etc.

First lets see if there is an interest from new users. That is important.
If there is then the regulars can then start donating objects for a library they can use. Well come up with conditions on what type of objects they can use. (Also make them interesting too). I would say we would need at least 10 users who would like to compete. (Heck we have over 300 new ones that just joined)
Remember the main focus is to have Fun! |

I'm very interested in doing this contest. It's a chance to really get into scene set up and working with dribble. I'm a relative newcomer. I returned a few months ago, I hadnt used ts in a couple of years before that. I consider myself a noobie since I am so new to 7.5. |

Well we have 3 people interested so far. Anyone else? I'd like to start with at least 10.
This is not for fame or fortune although the winner of the original contest now runs a Company! This is to help you with scene setup, lighting and texturing.
(I could see a frog being interested in evolving....:D)
Another Challenge for next year (Da Da World 2008)
If there is enough interest in this Challenge the next contest could be Teams. One experienced TS user and one newbie on each team. They meet in shared space to design their project and to show each other techniques and tools needed to complete their challenge. Two Renderings would be submitted, one from each team member. |

Edit:
this is just butterpaw enthusing in hopes more will join in! :D |

The other day I stumbled on the Da Da World Contest from years ago and thought this would be a great thing to bring back. This contest would have premade objects thus allowing new users to participate. I always felt new users didn't want to join the challenges because of the learning curve. This challenge doesn't focus on modeling but instead on creativity, scene design, lighting, texturing, and experimentation. It would be the first step in getting everyone playing on the same field. So everyone is eligible but the main goal is getting newbies "involved"
Recently I described what I hope would be the next step starting next year. 2 member teams competing with one being the "Mentor" and the other the "Student". This could be the second Challenge if we build the interest level. That contest would also include Modeling. This won't be easy to pull off unless we start getting people "INVOLVED";)
I think there is more then a handful of very talented folks that would like to teach the next new TS user that is willing to learn. I'm watching this thread to see what develops. Anyone interested in all this please let us know. I can pretty much tell you the ones not interested by lack of feedback.
Like I said at the start we are going to need a number of people before we can pull this off.
Butterpaw, all input from you and others is important. Nothing is set in stone and the whole thing is vaporware until we see interest from users. Currently my focus is seeing how many new users would like to compete in Da Da World 2007. (Everyone will be allowed to enter) |

I'd be interested.
I'd also like to know why I can't get metal to show up correctly in lightray in trueSpace, but I can in other 3D programs.
Metal in tS looks like gray boxes with reflections. It is very unrealistic. |

Perhaps you could PM MadMouse or Hemeulin and ask how they've managed to get good results - I've seen some pretty good metalwork from both of them in the past and they're both pretty helpful.
Steine - the challenge sounds quite interesting, although the team approach could be a bit challenging for some - would certainly need careful consideration of time zones, whether people have access to shared spaces (I can't for example) and TS versions... for example, I'm moderately experienced in TS5 but woulld only be able to offer limited advice to a newbie with TS7.5 for example.... Also, I'm mostly at work or on the commute, so don't get an awful lot of time to model, so wouldn't want to let down a partner on a team effort....
You'd also need to make sure any objects were suitable for use across various versions of TS, or limit the competition... I'm interested to see how this turns out in terms of level of interest - I'd say I'm tentatively interested, but it may be best to retain an option for 'soloist' entries, which would be more practical for folks like me. |
