Hi Folks
Check out the news on aardman's new campaign to raise awareness of disabled people. This is definitely a great use of talent.

I love those! :D
... and being one of those who uses a cane ... I've noticed how extraordinarily courteous people are to me, and wish they'd be that way to every one ;)
On the other hand, on the UNC campus where I work there is a sign at one building.... WHEEL CHAIR ACCESS (the picture sign) pointing to ... a flight of stairs! :p |

Hi Dennis.
I agree completely.:)
I also believe one of the greatest future uses of shared space will be in the liberation of severely handicapped people through realtime global collaborative social and business interaction in shared space.
I would like to hear your thoughts here and the thoughts of others in relation to the use of shared space for this purpose and related design and activity considerations, that is, if you don't mind my hijacking your thread here for a very good purpose!:o
What do you think about it?

Hey Mark. I think it's a great idea! Being able to give folks the opportunity to hop on a virtual skateboard, Or an Airboard, would be totally cool! And don't forget the flying saucers and the sharks! hehe! We need to pick up again on the UFO effort! Take the saucer for a cruise in a virtual galaxy!
BTW... I wonder how these shared portals would look with 3D glasses. No, not the 1950's style dorky paper cutout things with blue and red cellophane. I mean the dorky 21st century version! :D Seriously. Immersive space is IDEAL for 'virtual reality' type headsets.
And the use of this technology to view and study such spaces as the Beta Cell project (i.e. for Scientific Visualization). I have a feeling that term is going to be used a lot around here, beginning in the near future!

LOL! Not so sure about the shark in this particular context... that may be a bit extreme under the circumstances.:o
I've given quite a bit of thought to this subject already though. I believe that once the new Caligari Personal Shared Space Portals show up we will see a lot of portals popping up from folks who we are not already familiar with here... folks all over the world who will find uses for them in ways none of us had previously considered at all, and I am very much looking forward to that development.:)
Aside from the "fun" stuff there will be a lot of practical advantages for severely handicapped folks to utilize shared space realtime global interaction. It offers a great many things which the telephone cannot offer, and look at how sucessful the telephone was!:D

Speaking of scientific visualization, the atom scenario is a perfect example.
BTW I wonder if we could all see the Beta Cell scene at some point. I think that would be cool! Is it publicly available? |

In a semi-related development genre...
How hard would it be to create a scripted rapid-image-replacement function as an output from an image array (like the existing one in the truePlace Livingroom) so that we could fast-feed a framed image in shared space to fake animation?

I would think you must already have your images loaded into the shared space area, and have to time the sequence loading. But everyone would have to view the animation at the same frame rate. But that would require a timer or a simplified timer.
Or, rather, see if it is possible to just load an avi and attach it to the 'image' surface. Hm. How to do that... playing a movie file on a plane... |

Already tried movie formats, no go in shared space at all.
The images are already loaded in the scene. See the script array device for images inside the truePlace Livingroom. I harvested that scene to local stack and examined it quite a bit. I think this is do-able but I'm not sure of the best way to approach it. It could also be used to show fairly long flash movies comprised of many vector images.
I would need help on this but I think it would be very much worthy of pursuit.
Any other takers?

Hmm - I keep trying to look at this link - yesterday and today and everytime I get a message from browser saying that aardman can't be found. (Maybe they turn their server off over night so those in Australia can't view their website during the Australian day!?) |

Need to create a Cinema in shared space, so newbies can view a tour of what's being done. Perhaps one of those grand screens in three folds, so a panorama ocan be viewed. :D |

That's an excellent idea James!
The real trick is the bandwidth issue. These shared space portals at the moment can only handle about 6 meg of bandwidth before they become unmanageable for broadband and dialup users who start to have increasing lag added to their realtime experience and often cannot navigate at all unless it subsides.
This issue can be overcome with a determined creative approach though, it's just a matter of making the animation frames very tiny in filesize and rapidly sequencing them by an efficient and shared-space-friendly method, which would involve a team approach and a lot of trial and error.
Well worth the effort in my book though, but I would need considerable and frequent scripting and testing help to pull it off.

Aardman's new campaign to raise awareness of disabled people using voices from real handicapped people will be quite different then the norm lately. This should go over really well at schools I bet. I am going to be looking forward to this work coming out. When things are for a good cause I tend to take notice. I always liked Aardman's projects.
The link worked for me by the way. |

Link works fine for me too.
Have always been a big fan of Aardman and am delighted to see them taking this on - disability awareness is something close to my heart as having seen my dad struggle in a wheelchair and my brother's health rapidly deteriorating (both due to Multiple Sclerosis) I've seen some of the stupid attitudes they suffer and the enormous practical challenges. Typical example - people in wheelchairs being ignored whilst all conversation is addressed to whoever pushes the wheelchair, as if the occupant has a mental disbility as well as a physical one - frequently not the case... don't get me started!
I'd be interested to see how shared spaces etc could help, but am conscious that, for many, computers and similar technology can be beyond the capability of many with significant physical impairment - e.g. MS can impact fine motor skill like use of the hands to the point where operating a computer (or musical instruments etc) becomes near impossible - this was a major problem for my dad. Happy to discuss these kinds of practcality issues with anyone interested.... |

I hear you Nez, my wife has Multiple Sclerosis.
In regard to shared space though, it does hold potential even for MS victims if they may derive some use or comfort from it.
"Assistive Technologies" is the relevant buzzword these days for the tech end of helping folks and kids with disabilities to utilize computers and therefore shared space, and from recent advances in that field worldwide the prospect of their use is pretty promising.
Related Google Search for anyone interested:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Assistive+technology&btnG=Search
But the real kicker is here... listen to this kid's experience with Virtual Reality (5 years old with cerebral palsy) and then research the HUGE pricetags on NON-Caligari VR Solutions....

Even the crudest systems cost $30,000
LOL! And that is "NEWS" from the New York Times!!!
Right.... cut that down to one third and it covers trueServe the Hardware Server and The T3 line to have one awesome "truePlaces For Kids.";)
I laugh when people try telling me that trueServe is expensive! LOL! It's a STEAL for Organizations helping kids like this but they just don't know that yet. It's our job to make it relevant via design, and then via contact. I for one plan to and have for quite a while, but it takes a serious team approach.

Yeah I think aardman is doing a great thing.
I think you have a good idea mark. I wonder if a totally immersive environment could be created in trueplay like in that article, with the headset and gloves. That would really be something. That could really help people out and it would also go over well for entertainment. Can you imagine working on your 3d project seeing it as if you were in real space. Might be dangerous though, we may never want to return to the real world lol. It is already addictive enough. but for helping kids with disabilities learn to navigate their wheelchair, that's really something cool.
I think you're right that truplay has a lot of potential for good. We just need people developing scripts and scenes and stuff and see where it can go. I'm not aware of it's full potential yet but I see some really cool things happening in it. |
