It's now five minutes into the start of the TNL meeting and I can't log in. Been trying since before the start and it thinks about it for a while then goes back to login.

Anyone else having trouble?

The solution to this one was to log in through the web pages, and not using the login button in truePlay itself - the web pages jump you straight to the correct live space, so make a convenient entry portal, and you can even choose whether to use tP or tS from the page:

Seems a bit odd that you can't just log in with tP normally. How many people missed out because you couldn't login normally and didn't know that you had to go via the web link? The open tP from web link registry entry tends to get removed with any registry clean up (if you do one) which means you have to other edit the registry or re-install tP each time. That seems a bit backwards to me. You fire up tP, it has a login button, but it doesn't work anymore. That's just silly.

I just type in the necessaries in the link editor... so far that works.. whether ts or tp ... you can type in the 'room' number too.

Well, the need to use the web page is primarily because there are lots of different possible locations you could go to with tP and tS, and it gives you instant access to any and all of them.

And clearly the failure to log in directly to a default space (which would be the forum anyway, and not the meeting room space, so the web page would still be the fastest way in, in this case) from tP is not intentional - merely that servers have moved and changed over time, and the hardcoded details in the install are not up to date any more, requiring a patch to get it back into line (a planned item, obviously).

I had stopped using the web page because for some reason it always causes my player to open instead of trueSpace. I don't know how to force to open trueSpace instead, so I do the fiddly stuff.. :p

There is no spaghetti bowl in truePlay. No fiddly bits are even possible.
So for the time being tP is 'broken', unless you happen to know where the links on an obscure web page can be located.
No surprise there aren't any new folks showing up at the TNL... if a 'senior member' like Witch or myself have trouble simply signing in...
Patch us, pronto!

Point taken and understood spacekdet.

Caligari needs to fix this, especially if they want to attract new users to their flagship product, truespace 7.xx.

In the meantime, we should get in the habit, apparently, of ensuring the link is prominently displayed in the thread posts related to meeting events. We should do this in order to minimize the probability this will happen again.

Here it is again. Bookmark it too:

Perhaps we could script a solution:

On startup, trueplay gets its initial portal information from the Birds of a Feather web page. That way, when the web page is updated, trueplay is immediately updated, behind the scenes. Over time, the web page will be updated, and trueplay will be updated in sync, without requiring the user to update with a patch.

Or, perhaps this could be the 'patch'.

Sometimes I use truePlay because I don't want all the baggage. It no longer logs in.
I use truePlay's icon to start the program, not load Firefox go to the Caligari Site, find the right link, load truePlay and get in....nor will new users. Sometimes the thinking here baffles me.

Oh. Now I see what Tom means. The IP address of the server changed (pr perhaps the network card on the server got fried), and trueplay was looking for that specific network information.

I am not definite on this yet, but, it is currently possible to open a web page using trueplay. Then, perhaps, it is possible to read a configuration variable from a web page, and set its value to the trueplay initial portal. We'll see!

BTW, I did get in last night - with trueSpace. Even if the url changes... I can click the link for truePlay and it shows what I need to plug in to trueSpace .. so that's where I get the most recent info.

It's funny, because I just assumed that's what others were doing :o

BTW the web pages have updated - there is a comment below that it always opened in the player and not in trueSpace, but now the pages have two links, one to fire up trueSpace, the other to fire up truePlay - so no need to do the fiddly stuff, you can use the pages :)

If the direct log in worked, you would find yourself in the "wrong" space anyway, as our meetings don't happen in the default forum space, so you'd need to go logging in, jumping to another space - so here even once fixed the web pages usually are easier as they let you jump to the specific space for a specific meeting.

Hi Tom. While this is a sound solution, we do need to ensure that the link to the Birds of a Feather web page is included in the threads for the TNL! announcements.

That may help folks get into the habit of using it. Plus it would benefit new users.

Happy Thanksgiving!
