OK, so I was bored and had nothing else to do tonight, maybe.:p
Anyhow, some folks here were having some kind of issues with trying to get truePlay to access the big Thanksgiving TNL! Meeting the other night, and there was some talk about truePlay needing a patch to access the portal for some reason. Anyhow, I found a way to script portal access so you can use this alternative instead of a patch if you like.
While I was doing that, I decided maybe it was about time to "re-discover truePlay" and see whether there were some things we could bring to it these days with scripting that would be much nicer than the default opening scene.
So here it is Sunday morning now and I've been dabbling with this for a while now and having some serious fun.:D
For those in fear of change or in fear of me scripting (which I don't blame you for really:rolleyes:), this will be an ALTERNATE SET OF SCENES which you can open in your truePlay1.3 program from the File menu. This will NOT alter anything.
Once you get used to doing this of course you can make your own, enhance this one with new items, add scenes which have triggers that load other scenes while you are still in FPN, etcetera, and then if you are REALLY happy with something you put together you can always overwrite the default truePlay scene and have your own happy little desktop world to play in.
So this is just a sneak preview of what will be coming to this thread on Monday, and hey, if you want to do a similar thing yourself go for it... the more the merrier.:)

Ok Steve, and everybody else... here you go! :D
I have nine images to show you here (five in this post and four in the next) and right after the last one (in the second post) will be a zipfile containing a new scene called "tPdesk.RsScn" which anyone can load into truePlay1.3. and use instead of the default scene in truePlay.
This scene when opened in truePlay will enable you to overcome the existing problem with server addresses at one or more truePlace portals, you can click on objects in this scene and it will open either of two truePlace Portals (the Meetingroom or The Scriptorium) based on what scene object you click.
It can do MUCH MUCH MORE than the default truePlay Scene, and within it are links to Tutorials explaining exactly how you can enhance the scene and any others you care to as well. Watch videos, listen to music, do web searches, launch local files and programs you designate... the list is endless, all right from within this scene or others you create and script as described in the links you will find inside this scene.
Enjoy,
- 3dvisuals dude
Don't forget to grab the zip at the end of the second post below, and for additional information on what this can do for all of you, read the following thread: http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4082 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4082)
Scripted objects in this scene do the following:
1) The Blue Book = Launches Windows Explorer
2) The Green Book = Opens the Scriptorium in a new window/instance of truePlay
3) The Purple Statue = Opens my "TruePlay Immersive Desktop Development" thread at the forum containing Tutorials for this scene.
4) The Green Statue = Opens the Caligari Community Forums main page.
5) The Blue Marble = Opens the truePlace Meetingroom
6) The Two Open Book Pages - Open Google Image searches based on Book Page clicked
Bear in mind that everything in the scene can be copied and modified very easily for your own uses. I used books and sculptures as links, and there is room in this scene for over 500 additional linked objects! :p |

Wow, MarkO / 3dvisuals dude I can't wait to try this. This is something that I plan to show my Boss, this proof of concept. Is that ok to show him? It's easier to show this immersive concept that to try to tell someone about it....:D All credit will go to you MarkO. Is there a way to make your stuff copy righted material? Thanks for sharing your vision with us!!!!!

Hi Steve,
I'm glad you like it. This is a gift to the Community, I have no interest in enforcing copyright on any of it. It was just a freebie to help people (1) overcome the current truePlay portal link code problem where they couldn't log in to a hard-coded portal address which had changed since truePlay was released and (2) to give folks a first-hand / up-close look at how easy and simple it is to make your own immersive desktop launch scenes with truePlay1.3.
I don't personally consider it worthy of submitting to a potential trueServe Commercial Customer, I can do a hell of a lot better than this for you and/or with you if that is your intention, rest assured. Better to do that, but if you can't wait a bit on that all I ask is that you make it clear there is a very large distinction in quality between scenes and scripts which I release to the public as a freebie and those which I intend to offer for Commercial Consideration. Given that one very rarely gets a second chance to make the right first impression, I would suggest you wait on it rather than show your boss this level of quality in what I already know is an important potential venture, we can do a hell of a lot better than this for a serious business presentation and do so very rapidly if need be.
This is all very easy to do in fact, although it is time consuming of course. Any one of us here can do this kind of thing, but together, with a pre-defined shared objective, we could do far more and far better than what you see here for sure.
I appreciate the fact that you are as fascinated and excited by the potentials you see in Shared Space Develeopment as I am, I really do, but let's build something far more practical and impressive together for your intended audience, this example here falls very short of being a genuine "proof of concept" and would likely not be taken seriously in a business setting at all. I can definitely make "killer" business scenes targeted to the specific requirements of a given business market or business need and highly recommend taking that approach in your case, whether I do the design work, you do it yourself, or we do it together. If you want to "seal the deal," by all means lets do it, I'm ready and able to do it and I can help you to be as well whenever you are ready to begin.

Thanks James.
Yeah, doin' this kind of stuff really is cool and a lot of fun. Anytime you'd like to give something like this a shot yourself drop in to one of our Tuesday Night Script Developers Meetings in the truePlace Scriptorium online and let's talk about it in depth together... the link is right in this scene to take you there! :)
There's a lot of fun (and a great deal of income) to be had with Shared Space Development, and Immersive Desktop Development goes hand-in-hand with it all very nicely.

Usage note about this scene:
When you eventually begin to copy the books and sculptures in this scene so that you can modify the existing objects and links to your own liking with new images, new objects, or new scripts, you will find that the objects are a bit difficult to move in 3D Space in trueSpace.
There is a solution to that. In the Link Editor, just select the given object you wish to move and then use the orange triangle in the upper-right corner of the title bar for that object to open the level inside it. Inside that level you will see there are several scripted objects, one of which is the actual 3D Mesh Object. Simply select THAT object at that level, and then you will be able to move the actual 3D Object in 3D Space very easily.
Instructions for easily replacing objects and easily modifying scripts are inside every scripted object in this scene. Also remember to click the Purple Statue, it opens to a whole related thread with other scenes and concepts as well as Tutorials to help you develop such scenes yourselves.

Good point Mark, what I will do is just start to play with this stuff. I need to get my feet wet. I am changing my approach. I have been doing the tutorials trying to get up to speed on TS 7.51. TrueSpace has so much functionality, doing all the tutorials will take some time. I am changing my focus to work on your tutorials, learning how to do this stuff in my sleep. I have a new idea on how to tie the "Data Management or Server Room" side and the customer application side i.e. (Image server, Web services, GIS Applications, and EarthWhere). Once I learn to do this stuff similar to yours I will create a generic "Proof of concept". Then let you take a look at it to see if it makes sense. Than if you like, we can work on it together. What ever your schedule will allow. One Question, to get this TruePlay scene to work, to I still need to get that "Object trigger" that TrueBlue developed? I still what to do your tutorials that you developed way back in September. Thanks again for the vision and the willingness to help those with blinders on....lol.....me..... |

Hey Mark
Just had a chance to test your scene. Very cool. When I clicked the scriptorium book it opened another instance of trueplay to go to the scriptorium. Is it supposed to open another trueplay or stay in the same one? |

Excellent!:)
On the trigger that trueBlue (and Asem) developed I think you are referring to that scene loading trigger which opens one scene from right within another, and if so no, it's not needed for this particular scene, however it is a very important trigger to have and understand in offline scene development design work, so I do highly recommend getting it and trying it out a few times when you can.
For some shared space clients you are designing scenes for in the future it may prove to be an absolutely vital feature to enable them to have very highly complex scripted scenes which are connected and conveniently traverseable in order to overcome any inherent scripted scene size limitations on cpu demand which may otherwise arise within a single scene. That way instead of them having one very nice but absolutely enormous and cpu-demanding active scripted scene, they could have several less demanding scenes and simply walk between them in FPN mode as the need arises.
On our working together, anytime, just drop me a PM on it.:)

Hi Dennis,
Back in Post #3 here I mentioned that toward the end, it is expected.
Yep, it's kind of funny really... I hunted all over for days looking for a specific script command to limit the net opening to the existing instance of truePlay with no success. I know the command exists, but the one currently utilized in truePlay's default scene is not the one needed for this as it calls the hardwired path inside the C++ code of truePlay where the existing server address and port combo has been changed and no longer works.
In the process of building and testing the scene here, however, it dawned on me that it may be better to open a new instance of truePlay for net connections anyway and leave the other (first) instance of truePlay open. I came to that conclusion only after spending over an hour in that scene in FPN mode, where it ocurred to me that people will need to invest quite a bit of time in there at first in order to add and script objects to "fill up the house" so to speak and rearrange them while doing so.
Consequently they can leave the development work going and hop into truePlaces at will without having to stop and go through the file save routine if they like, or if they wish to have the first instance closed can simply exit it once the second opens. A changed scene may not throw a "This scene has changed, save it first?" Alert Dialog with the use of a scripted event which has not been error-trapped in C++ such as directly opening the net view within a changed scene otherwise, so they could lose all their current changes if I did it that way.
I still want that command though.;)

Just a "heads up" folks...
I had a report from a Vista user here that some of the scripts used in these immersive desktop scenes are incompatable with default Vista settings which prevent the running of the windows com object common in XP.
XP has no problem with these scripts but if you are running Vista all bets are off, I don't have it so I cannot explain to you how to get Vista to work with it although I do know that it is possible but complex after researching it a tad on Google.
If you have Vista issues I can't help you, sorry. It will just throw javascript errors and fail to work.

Sometime over the next week I'll be adding some new scripted objects to this thread which can be dropped into your offline scenes and will give you additional new offline capabilities.
The first is a modification of the Scene Loading scripted trigger made a while back by trueBlue and Asem. This one doesn't use a proximity trigger at all, it can be invisible and fired in a scene by hitting a keyboard key while in FPN mode at which point it will load a new scene around you while you are still in FPN, any scene which you designate beforehand. You can also of course place another one in your target scene and use the keyboard again in FPN at anytime to toggle between the two scenes, or have a series of scenes connected in a loop. This is already created and tested, I am just making the interface more newbie friendly at the moment.:p
The second scripted object will play ambient background sounds in a loop when a keypress is made in FPN mode, so you can have a waterfall, ocean waves, crickets, or whatever sound you enjoy playing softly in the background while you explore and enhance your own offline interconnected scripted scene worlds.:)

OK, here's the first of the two items I said I would pop into this thread soon.
This is called the "Pass Key."
The Pass Key enables you to very easily connect your offline scenes together for use in FPN (First Person Navigation) mode with either truePlay or trueSpace7.5+.
With this tiny little scripted object, while you are inside a scene in FPN mode you can just hit the "p" key on your keyboard and another scene which you designated beforehand will be suddenly loaded around you as you walk through your first scene.
If you give that some serious thought for a minute, this means that you can very easily develop deeply immersive 3D Desktop Worlds of interconnected scenes by simply placing this object inside your scenes, giving it a Target Scene to load when you hit the "p" key, save all your scenes to disk (or better yet to CD or DVD so your friends can experience them with the free truePlay program) and start exploring (and enhancing) your scenes to work together with each other, offering you a completely new perspective on your scenes and helping you develop your own style in interactive immersive multi-scene "Virtual World Design.":)
Below you will find a screenshot (sorry Norm, this one is 1024x768 in order for the entire LE and Stack Panels with their instructions to be seen) followed by the actual RsObj format scripted object, which is powerful but very small.
Enjoy, the other new scripted object will be along here in a few days once I enhance it a bit more.;)

Sorry guy, but look at the bright side... at least with XP you'll have an O.S. which the entire world supports, which unfortunately is not the case with Vista. I know 6 people who installed it and then uninstalled it in favor of XP Pro, so you are definitely not alone in that decision.
According to several Googled messages pertaining directly to the specifics of this scripting method in a Vista environment it could be done with Vista but would require you to undergo a great deal of system tweaking to unset Vista defaults, and some of those pertain to security now with Vista since it is such a different animal altogether, so I wouldn't recommend trying it at all.
Wish I had an easy solution for you but their just isn't one.

OK folks,
after rolling out my new "Pass Key" scripted object / offline world building method a couple of posts back in this thread, I caught a very nasty viral cold that threw me out of commission for a couple of days. I do plan though to follow through on what I had said before that post and design another new object to place here soon.
This second scripted object will play ambient background sounds in a loop when a keypress is made in FPN mode, so you can have a waterfall, ocean waves, crickets, or whatever sound you enjoy playing softly in the background while you explore and enhance your own offline interconnected scripted scene worlds.
I ran into something as I started working on this which I hadn't anticipated previously, that the existing audio scripts and audio access methods inside trueSpace7.51 are very primitive and desperately need a lot of basic functionality added let alone enhancements to them. The problem with it all, as is the problem with a lot of scripting in trueSpace, is that the methods to utilize the Windows API from trueSpace script have never been exposed by the Developers, so even basic things like having volume control, balance, and equalizers is something that will be an absolute bear to develop. Nevertheless, I have figured out a way to tap into ActiveX to pull it all off, but it won't be days in development, it will very likely be months.
I was walking around inside the scene I loaded to this thread a few posts back, and I had loaded a scripted object containing a wav-format music file 10 times it's equivalent mp3-format original... it weighed in at 55 MEG!!!
So there I was... walking around in that scene listening to Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion," and thinking to myself how great it was to hear in that place and how silly it is that I am stuck with "wav" format music files in trueSpace instead of mp3 format like the rest of the known world uses.
I won't rest until I overcome that. I will find a way to bring mp3 inside trueSpace and truePlay through ActiveX. Beyond that, I want to overcome the inability to place videos and animated avi's and animated gif's on plane surfaces inside our scenes as well, and that too can be done with ActiveX, although it is massively harder to do it that way than it would be with direct Win API access from TS Script. Nevertheless, I will find or make a way.

TrueBlue this is the error I get :a javascript error message: "ERROR EVENT source object: LaughTarget Error: Microsoft VBscript runtime error Description: ActixeX component can't create object Error code: 0x800a01ad -(null) Line 19, Char:1 Script text: objShell.Run "caligari.trueplay://tpportal.caligari.com/1212".
I thought I had turnoff all of Vista's administrative functions. I can use either TruePlay or TureSpace 7.5 to connect to ports tpportal.caligari.com/1212. Could it be that I need to up date my DirectX drivers. The last time I up dated them was in October? Wait a minute, do I need to install the "Wscripts" program for Vista? Thanks for your help. I am sure this problem that I am having is operator error...lol.

I will Bob, and I agree.
We used to have animated textures in trueSpace so in my opinion we still should, but our needs along those lines have become much more pronounced now that realtime viewing has become a much larger part of our life since trueSpace7.0.
When we all soon have an opportunity to rent Personal Shared Space Portals from Caligari as has often been mentioned over the last year in this forum, we will each need good audio and animation capabilities in our own online scenes as well. I can almost hear the shouts for it already.
So here's the state of things at the moment:
In Microsoft JScript (their version of Javascript which is also recognized by trueSpace7.51) there are several calls which may enable trueSpace Scriptors to access existing animation components within common Windows dll and ocx files via a couple of methods Microsoft created specifically for that purpose.
Two of these methods are the "new ActiveXObject()" method and the "getActiveXObject()" both of which may be utilized within trueSpace7.51 under certain circumstances provided that the Scriptor has a firm understanding of the specific global constants used by each object called from the script. These constants are visible in the Microsoft Visual Basic Object Browser, and in some cases are also very well documented on the internet.
Essentially the use of a script call similar to the following
var someObject = new ActiveXObject('NewOrExistingProgram.ID')
provides a trueSpace7.51 Scriptor with a JScript wrapper object to access an ActiveX or Com Object from within JScript code. Once successfully accessed, any of the thousands of highly developed and advanced MSWindows ActiveX Objects and their sub-components already present inside the Windows operating system directories become an extremely handy and extremely versatile toolset from which a trueSpace Scriptor may draw "parts" and "methods" at will and combine them at will through Jscript in trueSpace to perform functions which are not yet native to trueSpace.
This whole genre of related processes is commonly referred to as "OLE Automation."
It would be much better (and much faster) to use native Windows API calls and handling from within trueSpace script rather than OLE Automation, but unfortunately the existing methods for doing so have not yet been disclosed by Caligari, forcing Scriptors in the meantime to either go in the direction of OLE Automation to accomplish non-native tasks or to purchase and utilize various Microsoft VisualBasic tools to create our own external dll's which can then be accessed by JScript from trueSpace, thus "re-inventing the wheel" at a time when thousands of elegant and highly useful "wheels" already exist in the Windows O.S. just waiting for us to easily access and utilize with modular JScripted API code components inside trueSpace.
There are already existing primitive audio components in trueSpace JScripted objects which can handle "wav" format music, but the more widely used "mp3" format has 10 times better compression with no loss of quality compared to "wav" format and so is the ideal medium to convey audio and music in shared space settings online.
When it comes to having non-trueSpace native animation and video displayed in realtime on a 3D Plane Surface inside trueSpace though, such as MP3 Video, AVI and GIF formats, in the absence of a Caligari developed method, Scriptors will have to utilize the methods made available to us through Direct3D combined with OLE Automation, which is very difficult but definitely do-able. That will take me months to accomplish on my own, but if I have to go it alone I will nevertheless try very hard to do it.
In my opinion it is in the best interests of Caligari to provide a trueSpace-native C++ method to accomplish mp3 audio and some form(s) of realtime video or animated surfaces in shared space, because potential business investors in shared space hosting packages will certainly require it and in some cases may demand it before investing. Since I am one of them, I will do my best to make it happen.
I'll keep everyone posted on any related progress pertaining to TS7.51 and truePlay1.3 in all this, I know lots of folks here want this all as badly as I do.

Thanks trueBlue, the only Vista report on it prior to yours here was from Steve (Scala3D) who was unable to get them to work with his Vista setup.
Please feel free to use this thread in response to Steve in order to help him through the difficulties he is having in this regard, it's really not off-topic at all since this thread is one of the places where these scripts are located. There may be others in the future reading this thread who have similar difficulties as Steve with their own Vista setups and these particular scripts, so you would be doing them all a service if you guys can arrive at a working solution here to Steve's current inability to run these scripts on Vista.
I just wish I had a Vista machine too so I could help you all with it.
Thanks,

Hopefully trueBlue can help you with all this since he has Vista and no related issues with these scripts.
As for installing anything, NO.... the scripts call existing Windows components, and they already exist in Vista just as they do in XP. There are numerous settings in XP, Vista, and Internet Explorer (especially IE7) which may prevent these particular scripts from operating, although in most cases with XP anyway they will run just fine. I have no knowledge of Vista though, so you will need help from someone who has it for sure.

I am afraid I can not offer any advise for you in this matter. I have not done anything out of the ordinary. I do run Vista as an Administrator. You might check the UAC and any associated help files witthin Vista. Sorry |
