It's not dead yet, Jim.... but it's getting close. My main windows harddrive is on it's way out (that clanking sound is never a good sign...), so looks like I will have the joy of trying to back up and restore almost 1TB of data including my Vista x64 partition while I'm at it... :(
I can still check in with my laptop, but most of my time over the next several days is likely going to be spent getting this system back up and running.

Damn - no, the clanking noise is never good... And that's a lot of data, makes my measely pc sound tiny!
Hope you're back up and running soon - I was expecting to see you in the new SMC...
And congrats on the mentor thing too, well deserved. You've always been very supportive. |

Jack :(
There were some sales on some 500 gb HD the other day here. They had superb backup software as they made a clone of your hard drive. Maybe something will pop up around your area. :)
Best of luck - hopefully you can win the situation! |

Ouch, sorry to hear that Jack. PC failure is never a nice experience but at least you have some warning to backup your stuff...:D |

Thanks guys!
Fortunately it's the 320GB HD going down, but I had to clear off one of my 500 GB HD to hold the data from the 320GB... lol so it's still a mess really. Anycase, I was able to get everything backed up and it looks like I've figured out how to make a 64-bit WinPE boot disk so I think I'm going to be ok. So should just be a matter of re-installing everything then copying the data back over... (And probably calling Microsoft to re-activate Vista...*sigh*)
I'm going to test the WinPE disk now. If that works, then that's one of the major problems solved... if it doesn't work......... |

I just installed a 1TB fire wire drive some weeks back. Between reformatting and copying some 500 gigs of data that took a couple of days. The new drive is filling up fast... But with Windows machines it seems anything to do with HD's is is slow and nerve wrenching.
Good Luck.

Sorry to hear that Jack. Glad you saved everything.
So spooky - since I posted the HD WIP yesterday that's the second HD that's gone down ...

Yay! Looks like Vista and XP both survived intact. Damage report was only 2 bad sectors. So I think I've recovered mostly everything.
Vista Backup and Restore doesn't work BTW. It'll only do a full system restore to the same harddrive backed up from. Not real useful. I'm really pissed about that since the new backup features where one of the reasons I shelled out the extra money for Vista Ultimate.
Ended up using this software:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
It did a really nice job of the partition copy and resize, but didn't reset the drive letters for me. :( So after some Vista registry hacking looks like I'm back in business. :D
Now that I've got it all working again, I'm going to take the opportunity to install 4GB more ram and pro audio recording card... guess I'm just asking for trouble now! |

Phew... and breathe.
Yeah that's the one I use - Acronis Trueimage but v10. It's pretty good - but I can't say I've had to use it to restore anything yet... touch wood. And I'm avoiding Vista for as long as possible... :p only had bad experiences with it so far.

:D
The sad thing is the 4 Gig cost half what I paid for the 2GB I initially put in it... and it'll clock twice as fast too... so now I have to decide 6GB of RAM or 4GB RAM running at 1:1 bus speed... ;)
I'm leaning towards using the 6GB so I can actually take advantage of the 64 bit OS.
Thanks Blakeo. From the forums that I found, it looks like Acronis is what a lot of people went to as soon as they found out MS Backup and Restore didn't work. Looks like with good reason too. :) |
