Here's a sample pack I downloaded a while ago:

http://www.3dfrog.com/forums/hdr_Pack_1.zip

They were free. I don't know the usage limitations. I should have checked. If I can remember where I got them I'll find out.

And here is a program for editing your hdri images free version 1 for non commercial use:

One can make their own HDR files in Photoshop as far as I know. It does have a method for blending images and exports in the HDR format.

I'm sure there are other programs out there as well.

Lot of the HDR files I've seen are just hue and saturation adjustments to one extreme or the other.

Hey james, I have photoshop cs2. I don't see hdr option in save as or export. But after d3d format option there are parentheses with a bunch of file formats listed, one is hdr. But There is no option to make it hdr when I save it. Is there some trick to it? Thanks for pointing this out. If I can figure it out I can experiment with hdr files.

You don't really need a 'good' digital camera, any of the better brands will do.

HP, Olympus, Nikon, etc ad infinitum...

and better yet, get one that has been returned for repair or for whatever reason. One can finally some really sweet deals.

I picked up an $350.00 Olympus digital camera for $98.00 because the person who bought the camera used it for a vacation then made up some story how it was defective and brought it back to the store.

Their loss, my gain...the digital camera works perfectly.

Oh, one doesn't really need a digital camera for HDRI images.

You can manipulate tone, hue, saturation, channels etc to simulate multiple versions of the same image.

Just plink around until you get what you want to use , blend it and export as a HDR file.

You should try to get a camera that shoots in a Raw file format. Than you can do as James suggests and get True 32 bit HDR files by combining pictures shot (or adjusted to different EV exposures in PS) at different exposure values.

I use both methods pretty effectively in PhotoShop.

Rich

(PS CS2 has the ability to stitch together multiple pictures into a single panorama. This works well for skys and back drops in your scenes.)

Vue easel exports Pict, BMP, and Jpeg. Can any of these file formats be used to make an hdr image in photoshop? I am not much of a photographer and would have an easier time using computer generated images. Vue xstream looks like it can do anything but I can't afford it. I been thinking about getting easel in the near future anyway, this might be another reason to get it.

have I hijacked this thread? trying to stay on topic, sorry if I did.

The problem with those formats is they are all 8 bits. Yes there is software that will convert any of those into a 32 bit format... what you get is a 8 bit image in a 32 bit format, the upper 24 bits will be empty. Now if it exports in 16 bit or higher formats you will at least be getting a 16 bit image in a 32 bit format.

Make sense?

Started experimenting with HDRI in Dribble, and thus began a small quest for free HDRI images.

Here are a few I wanted to share with you guys:

Thanks Frank,

Especially the Belgian site is very instructive because you can immediately see the effects of the different images on the various shaders.
