Just for fun, I was curious how many tS users are working in one side or the other (model or workspace) or indeed how many are using a bit of both now that tS7 has been out a while and updated dramatically in tS7.51.

I have my own working methods and I have no bias here...just curious.

I took the multiple choice option out so please choose the 'best fit' response. Thanks for taking the time to look...and vote?

P.S I will understand if tS7.1 users don't venture into workspace much...

I try to do most of my stuff in workspace, sometimes there is a feature I need in model but I get by pretty good just using workspace. The most time I spend in model is when I'm playing with dribble.

Although my Desktop runs 6.6 and 7.5 fine, 6.6 runs faster on my laptop, and recently has been getting more use. To tell the truth, the interface (6.6 - model side) which I had found so hard to learn for so many years has 'grown' on me to such an extent that I greatly miss having, for example, the PE tools pop up 'next to me' in WS. (I'm always behind....:))

I work mainly in Model and only venture into Workspace if I need to use some of the new tools that Model doesn't have. I would like to work in Workspace a lot more then I do, but I've been with TrueSpace since version 1 and I'm so use to the Model environment it's hard to move away from it.

Mmm, interesting results so far with a 50/50 split between workspace and model based preferences....I wonder if that will change over the next 7 days.

I think I'm closer to 50/50 Workspace/Modelside than the voting options allow. Modelside for boolean and some polygon work - Workspace for most of the polygon stuff.

Edit: For some reason I thought this was speifically in regard to modelling but on re-looking at this thread I realise it isn't. Now I can vote.

I primarily use the model side, but love some of the new features of the workspace side. I also find the workspace to be more forgiving especially concerning undos since they have been fixed. Then I find myself needing a tool from the modeller which sometimes destrys the editability of the model in the workspace and vise versa. But I'm learning.

Uhm, you didn't offer an option for about half and half... which is closer to what I'm doing at the moment..

I have a slight preference for model side, because it's a bit more similar to something i've done before.. However, I also find aspects of the workspace very useful and appealing... :)

I love the potential power of the new animation tools but the limited output options (ie no rendering without VRay) have prevented me from getting stuck in. However the tools for boning and setting up joints are great as is the whole new animation editing setup. I'd like to use it more.

I definitely spend most of my time in Modelside - stil it has improved since 7 and 7.1 - back then I use to use 6.6 all the time.

Have you tried Render to File in Workspace?

I'm talking raytrace rendering your talking realtime-display capture. The only option for raytracing at this stage from within Workspace as I understand it is to buy VRay. What your suggesting works but isn't what I want to do.

I actually model in the Model side - more options and use the workspace to texture for v-ray or real time.

I use workspace as much as possible now in an effort to learn the new ways of doing things. But I miss the way lights work the model side... and booleans are sometimes essential. And since I just got dribble I'll be over there a bit more for a while :)

I can't take the poll without the 50/50 option, but in my opinion model is still the most usable.

Most all my work is in workspace now except for import/export and booleans.

I actually prefer to stay in workspace since much of what I do is in scripts and doesn't really translate to use in the model side as well.

Like the lights setup in model side though

possibly because it's a poll for ts7 users

But maybe i AM a TS 7 user that went back to TS 6.6 for work and just touches TS 7 when there is no other way around. Because TS 7 bugs me too much? Take a look in the bugs section and you will notice what i mean ;)

It is not for me to tell you how to vote but model side IS effectively tS6.6 with a makeover and HDRI amongst others. On that basis (if you have tS7 and went back to tS6.6) would your vote not be Model side only?

Mmmm, interesting how one extra vote now puts the majority use with workspace. Still a few days left to vote on this one. No real outcome from it beyond curiosity but perhaps a useful snapshot of usage for Caligari to use??

It looks evenly split in opinion. With 50% users who mostly use Modeler and 50% would rather use the workSpace side. I don't know what all this means other then we have options.

Heh, i wish it would, but it is not. In this many ways that TS 7.5, be it modeler or workspace, is nearly useless for me. I just wanted to state that i miss the "i still use TS 6.6" poll. I am a TS 7.5 user that uses TS 6.6 most of the times where even possible :)

Looks like 19/18 leaning towards more of model side usage at the moment. It means nothing other than I am not in a minority in being happy that we still have the model side. There are those who say scrap the model side; workspace is where it is at. This poll simply says, 'please don't do that; a lot of us still rely on it'.

Nothing more, nothing less...but it is not over yet anyway...:D

I use model for speed and productivity due to familiarity with it. No other reason. When I have time or realtime walkthroughs etc. I use workspace.

Please do not think I am bashing it, quite the contrary. I want the power of workspace but it is missing a few tools and workflow from the model side. Once all the good stuff is ported over I can see myself moving over but for now, with my limited free time, I have to get in and get out with what I can. Model is the only way to do that...for now...:D

Think of a mechanic who has to fix a car.

He has a top of the range computer that can diagnose the problems and tune it up better than ever, and it only takes 30 mins.

He also has a good old fashioned wrench.

Turns out he only has 10 mins available to do the job....same thing here with me...:D

I do still use 6.6 for personal use, but model side 6.6 is faster(drawing) than native 6.6(on my machine anyway). For tuts and such I try to use 7.5(workspace is 7.5 and vice versa/reciprocate IMO) as much as possible. That does not make it more useful(to me).

A fascinating thread - I missed the poll but even had I been in time I'm not sure how I could have voted. I'm not sure that too much can be taken from this poll as the real question might not be which side of tS7.x do you use. A better question might be "what do you use tS 7 for?

Currently I have several different projects on the go at the same time - one involves realtime immersive environments utilising DX9 shaders which require the LE for material editing purposes and due to my desire to reduce CPU overheads I disable the bridge and work almost solely in workspace.

A second project involving the construction of architectural models intended for raytraced scenes utilizes the model side - (incidentally the model side of tS 7 - which is essentially tS 6.6 - is both faster and much more stable than tS 6.6 in my experience. Thus I would not use tS 6.6 at all given the model side of tS 7 is superior).

Another project involves making low res characters - I model these mostly in model side, transfer across he bridge for rigging purposes and will eventually transfer back posed versions of these characters for use in the LW renderer.

Finally, I started building a new rocketship tonight - I'll probably build it predominantly in model side for two reasons; one, I'm more fluid with the greater versatility of model side PE tools and two, the ability to utilise layers to hide and unhide model components is so ingrained into my workflow that the abscence of this facility in workspace is a real hindrance - on the other hand I like the way the tool icons behave in workspace and the selection tools are better.

Rating the two sides from the perspective of modelling only I'd say the mix is something like 70/30 model side to workplace but this is heavily affected by the way I like to texture as I go.

The only thing I can say for sure is that I like them both equally but for different reasons.
