Hey guys, Caligari sent me an email with a pretty sweet offer to upgrade to 7.5 from 6.6, but I need to know a few things about 7.5

1. Can you animate tank tracks around the road wheels without a plugin?

This is something that most 3D packages do -even Blender, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it with TS6.6 without a plugin.

2. How does pyrocluster work with 7.5?

I don't have time to play with the demo because I'm studying for the last Cert. I need to qualify for Microsoft's MCSA.

Animating tracks? i haven't tried it but there are objects in the libraries that have say a plane where the propeller goes around as you move it, i suppose the same thing would work for tracks i.e. the tracks move as the tank does (assuming it's a tank)

as far as pyrocluster goes, it works fine in model side (which is really just 6.6) so you can build your scene then move it to the model side for rendering and add any pyrocluster effects there. By the way though, it only works with the lightworks render not dribble or vray.

The truth is that 7.5 is a very different creature from 6.6. Its a transition phase for trueSpace as it evolves. The new animation capabilities already there and the announced morph target system for 7.6 will make it a far more powerful tool for animators despite the current limitations of outputing from the workspace side - you either purchase VRay or you use realtime display capture.

6.6 is old school, 7.5 is new school with scripting and all new methods of working it also currently has 6.6 as a bolt-on which allows you to dip into the new stuff a bit at a time rather than headfirst.

I updated to 7.5 because its my game plan to try and maintain the updates. I've learnt some of the new tools. With every improvement and release I find I'm spending more time on the workspace side. Eventually I'll either buy VRay or other options will become available for rendering. (Dribble for Workspace?)

What's your game plan? What do you want to get out of the software? What does the software need to do for you? Can you afford it at this point in time?

1. Can you animate tank tracks around the road wheels without a plugin?

tS7.51 has Procedural Animation which can do some sophisticated things. Since you didn't describe what methods that were done to animate the tank tracks, I'm unsure the same method can be done in tS7.51. With that said, the procedural animation series, shows a laser gun tracking an orbiting space ship, then firing the laser while the gun on wheels is moving across the asteroid. At the same time energy particle collectors are storing energy and transferring it to the guns. Rotation, tracking, movement, timing, resizing, shader change and etc. can all be done procedurally.

This is something that most 3D packages do -even Blender, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it with TS6.6 without a plugin.

re: Pyrocluster:

This guy said it worked in tS4.3. I don't know if it works beyond that level.

Roman said that improved Particles will be part of the tS7.6 package. He didn't specify what, but didn't mention particle flow.

Hey James.

Could you post the link where Roman mentioned particles? That is most interesting!

I can't, just something Roman said in passing at the Tuesday Scriptor meeting. I might have even read him incorrectly. But he did mention particles and flow in the same sentence. :D

Ouch....

if there's one thing which will keep Roman from attending our informal gatherings on Tuesday nights it will be mis-quoting him here in the forums, quoting him accurately is bad enough, c'mon! These are just relaxed get togethers, not formal press conferences! LOL!

The context in which Roman mentioned particles was one of the future of trueSpace8 and beyond combined with shared space development. He wasn't saying that we would have particles at any specific time or version at all, just that it was certainly on his mind for the future.

Of course Roman wants such things in time, and when you really think about it he probably wants such things a lot more than any one of us do. Cut him some slack here though, particles are a massively complex thing to introduce into the unique physics environment of trueSpace and when you look around here in these forums are not anywhere near being at the top of the Customer demands list at all. Caligari will get there as soon as higher Community priorities have been addressed, of that you can be sure.

Please though, let's not all start quoting him from our Tuesday night meetings where maybe, just maybe, he may be able to talk with us without fears of being quoted here or mis-quoted here. Thanks guys.;)

Got another question? If I upgrade to 7.5 from 6.6, will I get a free point upgrade to 7.6?

At the moment there is no information announced on the next release of tS, so no-one can say at present. It is Caligari policy not to discuss releases until they are imminent :)

HTH!

yeah i remember what happened last time, the slightest hint that the release was on the horizon started a feeding frenzy, keeping it quiet till it's right upon us is a good plan.

I can't keep Roman from coming to those meetings.

But I can keep me from coming to them.

We must all have our priorities after all.

I apologize if that message appears to be aimed at you James, that wasn't my intent at all. I enjoy your participation with us in shared space a lot and I'm very sorry that I wasn't more careful in my message so as to avoid the appearance of pointing a finger at any one person, especially you.

I hope you will reconsider and just chalk it up to another case of me being inconsiderate with one of my knee-jerk reactions, which in fact is exactly what occured.

What I did say remains true in my judgement, but my saying it without due consideration as to how my statements could be perceived as an apparent rebuke in this case is something I regret, especially if it results in you taking it personally. I do in fact value your input and participation. I am sorry.
