Script Developers Meeting - Tuesday December 11th

Tonight is going to be a little different than our usual meetings. We'll have an interesting new scene as always but that won't be our focus tonight at all, this particular meeting will be focused on one thing primarily:

Working Avatar Vehicles (of all kinds)

Tonight we will explore ways together to overcome the final barriers we have encountered previously in various Avatar Transport efforts in a concerted effort to provide working versions inside shared space tonight.

I would also like to attempt Live Avatar Jousting Matches tonight if things go according to plan.

As always everyone is encouraged to bring with you any questions, ideas, scripts, scripted objects, unscripted 3D objects, or whatever else you may like to share with us all together. There will be ample opportunity provided to all who wish to present anything, and anything you'd like to discuss or share there with us all is most welcome.

Even if you have very little or no understanding of trueSpace Scripting, Shared Space Development, or Immersive 3D Desktop Development, drop by anyway... it's always an interesting and fun experience and each of us, including you, make it so every time.

I hope to see you all there for this one, it will definitely be interesting and fun.

Thanks.

Directions:

Directions for those WITH an existing truePlace password:

Option 1:

Go to the following web page and look for the "Scripting Live!" links for either truePlay or trueSpace then click the one you wish to use.
http://www.caligari.com/birdsofafeather.asp (http://www.caligari.com/birdsofafeather.asp)

Option 2:

Download the scripted objects which I created (in the following forum posts) and click them to be taken there.

For trueSpace 7.51, 7.5, and the TS Demo:

I created a new object for trueSpace7.5x users who are either unfamiliar with setting the Network Server and Portal Settings (the Demo users for instance) or are like me and just get tired of doing it manually when you are in a rush.

Just load this puppy into Workspace or any scene and then click on it, it will automatically (and harmlessly) reset your current Network Server and Portal Settings (which you can do yourself manually anytime if you wish) to match "The Scriptorium" where our Meetings are held, and it will bring up the standard Shared Space "Login" Dialog to connect you right to us.

For truePlay Users:

for truePlay users - go to the following thread and download the scripted scene there then load it in truePlay and click on the green book inside the scene.
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4459 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4459)

Directions for those WITHOUT an existing truePlace password:

(1) Getting a Password and Username to enter truePlaces:

(Our Tuesday Night Meeting is held inside a truePlace Portal (#1212) and you will need both a Password and Username to enter there which is different from your Caligari Customer Password and Username. Also be sure to get your truePlace Password and Username during Caligari business hours well before the meeting begins)
http://cart1.caligari.com/web/trueplaymainreg.aspx (http://cart1.caligari.com/web/trueplaymainreg.aspx)

(2) Instruction Page on Port Address Settings in trueSpace 7.5x:

(Note that the following instructions show you how to set the portal entry point in trueSpace to the truePlace Meetingroom (tpportal 1111) where once you arrive you will find an easel with an image on it which says "click here to enter the Scriptorium," and one you click on that image you will be instantly transported to the actual Script Developers Meeting held in tpportal 1212)
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespac...7&postcount=30 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespac...7&postcount=30)

(3) truePlace "Scripting Live1" Page: (with countdown timer in PST):
(This is the Caligari Countdown Timer and Info Page for our Tuesday Meetings)
http://www.caligari.com/ScriptLive.asp (http://www.caligari.com/ScriptLive.asp)

(4) The "connect to shared space" icon in truSpace7.5x:

The "connect to shared space" icon in trueSpace7.5x looks like two Avatars facing each other (ie: sharing space).

When you are all set and ready to connect you just need to click the appropriate icon in trueSpace and then enter your truePlaces Username and Password into the Dialog Box which will then pop up, then hit the "connect" button on the Dialog Box.

See you there folks!

Unfortunately, where I live I have to use an ISP provider that is a cross between DSL and satellite...I have a dish on top of the highest part of my house pointing to a Radio tower five miles away. I usually get 3 to 4 Mbps download speeds, but last night I was only getting 1 or 883 Kbps.....

Hey Steve...

how would you feel about weekend meetings instead? They would be focused on shared space development, shared space design marketing, and immersive scene development and marketing by CD.

There would be some scripting but only in direct relation to these subjects.

I am considering this for immediate startup.

Thanks Guy, it will be great and very different.

This is an idea that is ready to be implemented now and will be a good thing for all who participate.

I'll keep you posted on related developments this week.

Is this to replace your Tuesday Night Scripting Meetings or in addition to them?
The good news is you can hold them earlier in the day, making them more accessible across the Pond.

In addition Steinie. BTW that beard makes you look like GQ cover material!

This is intended to supplement the Tuesday night meetings. The Tue. night meeting started out as an 'incubator' experiment, coupling scripting with shared space development. We will be doing the Tue. night meetings still; we are all very pleased at the success they've been. The shared space aspect has now grown large enough to stand on its own, just as the scripting has. So it's time to split them up, into their own respective times. Scripting and shared space development are very tightly intertwined and will remain so. The Tuesday night meetings will focus on more elaborate scripting development and techniques, which may then be merged/applied with the shared space developments that occur and are presented at the weekend meetings. This is a Big Thing folks. It is very exciting to be a part of this.

The good news is you can hold them earlier in the day, making them more accessible across the Pond.

What Frootee said!:p

Seriously though, yes, cross-pond accessibility was definitely one of the factors that contributed heavily to me deciding to do this. In the absence of a shared space regularly scheduled meeting originating on the other side of the pond perhaps this will in some way inspire one to emerge and I would very much like to see that happen. I would also like to see one emerge from every other continent too, but that will come in time I guess.

These new meetings will be on Sundays every week, starting this week, They will begin at 12:00PM Pacific Standard Time (Caligari time), and will be pretty "laid back" in their format. They will be more like open discussions and free-form workshops than formal presentations and will be very flexible in their content provided that the content genuinely falls within the subject matter I have described above here.

Everyone will be encouraged at these meetings to consider, discuss, and develop marketable "immersive scene" designs of their own, both individually and in workshop teams, and the overall focus will be to develop genuine income from all this wonderful technology.

It should be interesting, and if all goes well it should also become profitable.

As Jason already pointed out accurately though, these Sunday meetings are more a supplement to the Tuesday Night Scripting meetings than anything else. The Tuesday meetings will continue, it's just that my focus will be more on the Sunday meetings as other Scriptors (who in fact are far more talented in that regard anyway) will be focusing more on developing the Tuesday meetings to their full potential as well. The two are very interconnected by nature though, so they will no doubt each contribute to the success of the other in the months ahead.

There are just lots of different ways to approach all this "development" work. I see this as one particular collaborative aspect of it all which we could all certainly help each other with a great deal in the coming year. Like a few other folks here I have quite a bit of marketing experience which I'd like to develop in relation to all this and share with others who are similarly interested in ways to profit from trueSpace and all this new "immersive design" technology.

I also intend as this gets going to use it in an interesting new way for both the Caligari Community and Caligari by having volunteer "outreach focus groups" determine a specific market to introduce this technology to, design a portal scene tailored to that specific market, and then invite people worldwide within that specific market to attend a special event hosted temporarily on a Caligari Server where that special portal scene resides.

Such an outreach would serve at least three excellent purposes at once:

1) It would provide the Designers working experience in the field (and could certainly lead directly to related employment and business for those Designers)

2) It would provide entirely new (and perhaps very significant) new market exposure for the inherent technology itself (and hence new trueServe and trueSpace sales prospects)

3) It would provide the Community here with a clear avenue by which any one of us could find and develop new ways to benefit financially from all our trueSpace work, and there's nothing better than to get paid well for doing the work you love the most.

Like anything else we try in shared space though, it's an experiment, so we'll just have to see where it goes over time. I feel the time has arrived for such an experiment now, and hopefully the outcome will be a big success for us all if I'm right about that. We'll see!:p

Thanks for asking, I should probably have announced this in greater detail earlier. I probably will later today or tomorrow here though.

Congrats on the Gold Ambassador award btw!

Um, Is this the place where I pick up a job application? :D

Yes, this is a good move Mark. Sunday afternoon immersive scene development, coupled with Tuesday night script class. We learn scripting on Tuesday nights and apply the knowledge to shared space worlds on Sundays.

Now we need to work on scripting that virtual cash... :D

"application?"

Dude... that is "so old school!"

Nah.... we won't be applying for any jobs with all this... we'll be designing our own jobs with all this.:D

When this technology takes off worldwide in 2008 like a rocket, and you can be very sure that it will... guess who businesses worldwide will be looking toward to have them design custom interconnected immersive portal scenes as "worlds" which they can then immediately utilize in their own markets?

You bet... it will be those few of us with the foresight to get hands on experience in it all now because that direct experience will definitely be in very high demand very soon, and that demand will be global.

Great times these... but even better times are coming toward us all now very fast!
