Your right Splinters, for $75 I'll get "Dynamic" hair. Not a bad plug in...
Now, now steinie. You know what I meant. I spent all morning playing with hair (on pepe) and having great fun. I would pay £38 for that alone. That I have a dozen other great features to uncover for free is amazing!!
Oh, did you see the SSS demo on youtube....SOLD!

Yup, a nice addition to the 3D arsenal, no more no less. Gives me some new features to play with while I wait for tS7.6/tS8. I may still end up doing all my work in tS but it is a nice toy nonetheless and, given that the future of tS is undecided, it never hurts to learn another package...providing you have the time...;) |

Hey did anyone mention the letter that got published in Issue 102 April 2008 from Paul Boland?
It is on page 8 where he writes about the 100 Greatest 3D Movies Issue 100 being a Farce.:) |

Well hopefully this post won't be deleted since I am a TrueSpace LOVER since the Amiga days...but a deal is a deal....
I upgraded to Carrara 6 Pro for only 75 bucks too. It is not real time rendering so doesn't compete with TS, TS doesn't have Dynamic Hair so they don't compete, I'll use it like Vue and TS and come out with a training DVD!:)
The deal ends March 31st and you need the 3D World Issue 100 to upgrade. Check your bookstores.
Now where is TS 7.6 I have a TAX return that needs to be used... |

The biggest disadvantage to Carrara is the slow render. On a good note if you have another computer, it comes with a free node render.
I downloaded the app and did some test renders using the sample scenes and actually thought it did pretty well. Need to port some scenes across to each program, tS & carrara, to do a real comparison but my gut reaction was that carrara seemed faster than tS LW. I could be wrong though.
I liked the fact that an animation I rendered as a jpg sequence could be played right there in the carrara render window. In tS I have to do an assembly in another program. But then the tS's realtime playback of animation (in both modelside and workspace) seems better.
Clearly it doesn't have all the features of tS and vice verse - but that's why we have more than one program! |

Naughty I know but this is my head done in Carrara with a simple SSS shader and hair. One spotlight and soft shadows. Rough but for a few hours work with a new program...not bad.
I am going to try the same in tS now, see what it looks like. This rendered in a few seconds by the way. |

No, not gay...just experimenting. Two things make me happy here; the SSS effect on the ear as I requested in another thread and the hair. The style and colour are awful but it looks realistic and I had access to clumping, and advanced brushes as well as dynamic hair. Couldn't get a similar result in tS I am afraid...:o |

You can make skull caps for each head model - in fact it's probably easier to work with hair/fur that way. Best way imo is to use a copy selected polygons and paste them and instant skull cap. Save a few of those up with different styles and colors and you are in fashion city. :D |

While you Paul are trying out sss and hair I´m fully exploring
trees and water...I just imported trees into Vue and textured them there
and they look very good !
I see it as another piece of tools that work together nicely with
Truespace.
Truespaces link editor is incomparable to anything out there ....
its just that companies cant build everything all at once.
Truespace bones are nice too ...:)
Nice thing with Carrara is that most things can be exported....
so we can import into Truespace ....

One tree from the tree generator instance brushed in Vue......
Tree generator has many options and is a good way
to get trees into Truespace at low cost.;)
this is only one tree out of imagination.... |

As long as you just want Carrara 5 Pro, you should be Ok though. Steinie (I think) is referring to the decent upgrade price for version 6.
To be honest, it is only the hair and SSS etc. in version 6 that has peaked my interest even though there are many other features. tS remains a better program IMHO than Carrara 5. |

Yeah, I get that! Sensible is for people with no imagination right? You could pick a random number and just open it to that page!;) |

yeah, kind of been doing that.
Just subscribed too. with the exchange rate and the fact it was only 51 GBP, it worked out at a mere 65 euro...that's 1/2 the price of buying it in the shops. |
