The 2008 Lurkers Invitational
Hi folks...
I would like to take a moment here as we all approach the new year together to invite all the "Lurkers" at the forum here to finally come forth and join us all directly as new Registered Forum Members in usshering in what will soon become this Community's very best year ever.:)
A "Lurker," for those of you unfamiliar with the term, is a person who (just like nearly every one of us Registered Forum Members here once did) comes to these forums occasionally and perhaps frequently before ever Registering here as a Forum Member to post and reply to messages.
I was a "Lurker" here myself for several years before I took the plunge in February of 2007 by becoming a Registered Forum Member here, I only wish now that I had done that several years earlier. Many of us if not most of us here had similar frequent visits to the forums before Registering at last as Members to post and reply here.
I often hear it said in shared space meetings when I run into folks there for the first time that they "have been lurking at the forums here for a long time" and usually it's because they didn't think the quality of their work was adequate to show to other folks here. Every single one of us here has similar reservations about our own work to some extent... it's actually extremely common, a lot of the talent here makes me cringe when I see my own stuff too, but so what? You're already planning to take the plunge here to join us some day anyway, aren't you? Why be like me and regret not having done it much sooner?
The real fact of the matter is that this particular unique Community here is all about far more than modeling skills, animation skills (and I have none of those still by the way!), trueSpace versions, or any of that... it's all about sharing here... learning together here... developing each other's skills here. In that sense this forum stands entirely in it's own class... there isn't another really like it anywhere on Earth.
If you are a "Lurker" here, why not make January 2008 the month in which you finally end your Lurking days here and join us as a Registered Forum Member here so we can all really get to know you and you can really get to know us?
While you're at it too, grab a ~free~ copy of truePlay and come join us in multi-user online scenes and events too! Invite your friends too, they don't have to be Caligari Customers to download truePlay and join you there, so why not try it out and then take them all for a cool online tour together in truePlaces... they are open 7 days a week and 24 hours a day so go for it!
I have yet to meet a "Former Lurker" here who wasn't very glad they made the decision at last to Register here at the Caligari Community Forums and post at long last, but I have met many who said they wish they had done so long ago, and I wish I had too.
Take the plunge... join us in January... the more the merrier and most of us here couldn't care less what your current skill levels are really, although most of us here are always ready to help you improve them anytime you wish.
Let's have a great time together at last this January, what do you say?
You'll be very glad you decided to so just go for it... it's free, painless, and it only gets better here every day.:)

Great Invitation. Cheers!
I have been registered for some time and I do check the posts often. I await Ts 7.6 with baited breath. I've no real skill in 7.5 yet as I am always trying to find the time to dig my teeth into it. I'll post my first attempt when I can find the file. I just suffered a WinXp crash and I have just finished re-installing all the core stuff.
Thanks for the invitation. I was going to wait until I got some skill in Ts before I tried Trueplay.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Welcome. I actually started coming here and actually posting about a year and a half ago. Posting my attempts in the "work in progress" forum has allowed me to really shoot up in my performance. You get lots of helpful advice on improving your skills.
Doesn't matter if your attempt is "good enough" since people will help you with composition, texturing and lighting. |

Hi TigreStripe!
That's a great Avatar you've got there by the way, well done!
Sorry to hear about the crash, I shudder to think of having to face that myself.
I'm really happy if my thread here inspired you to become more involved here in the forums, the more you post here the more you tend to get out of these forums, it's kind of "a rule of thumb!"
On waiting to use truePlay I'll bet you're not alone on that at all. TruePlay really is great though and requires no trueSpace experience at all. Most people don't realize that you don't even have to be a Caligari Customer at all to download it and use it and it's completely free! So by all means download it and try it out, it's a lot of fun and a very practical place to meet friends and family and associates from all over the world live, or even to hold your own meetings and tours, so be sure to send them all an e-mail about it with a download link so they can meet you there anytime!
The weekly scheduled events held there are always interesting too and are usually a lot of fun as well. Of course you can also have your own events there anytime too, or just have get-togethers with anyone you wish anytime there, even if they live on the other side of the globe!
Thanks for posting here and letting me know that this thread did serve a good purpose, I suspected it would but there's nothing better than a great confirmation of it to make my day.:)
Hope to see you soon in shared space!

Yeah, I guess a lot of folks tend to expect this forum to be like others out there in terms of non-constructive criticism, that tends to be the typical case in many other forums but not here for sure.
It's always great when someone puts that fear of rejection behind them and becomes active here with us all, hopefully this thread may inspire others to take that plunge too.

Thanks about the Avatar. It's one of two I have. One is a family crest, more or less, that's been a WIP for <cough> 10 years. This one is just a forum avatar.
I will try Trueplay. Once everything is reinstalled. as it turns out it was a blessing. I needed to clean Windows out and it was a good excuse to pick up another drive. :)
I'm still dead new to 3d modeling and my 2d skills are somewhat basic as it applies to drawing art. I started doing it mostly as I'm into sci-fi, spacecraft to be precise.
The stuff I've seen both here and on Sci-Fi meshes give me the shudders. I'll probably never get anywhere near that good but if I can hit a quarter of the skill I've seen I figure I would have done well.
Thanks again!
Ts
PS. I'll try and track down the first model I did and post it in the gallery. |

My pleasure guy, glad to see you getting more involved here!
I'll probably be bumping into you in truePlaces soon online once you start exploring with truePlay and that will be great!
When you want to talk sci-fi ship building with me sometime I can show you some very rapid and cool methods too, just let me know. Here's one I made recently and rendered in Vray so you have an idea of the style my methods enable:

We are actually working on making that model an avatar transport for Saturday the 5th of January at the Animators Meeting in shared space too, so if you think you're ready to go for an actual online flight in this we may just be able to arrange that for you now too!:D
Welcome to our world!:)

This coming week when you and I get together to work on animated avatar transports Froo wants to help us out with that too so between the three of us this should be a lot of fun to tackle together!:D
Come Saturday the 5th I think we can get some cool stuff ready to ride for sure and it will be great to see folks delve into animation with you even more once they see that it now empowers them to create avatar rides in their scenes and portals which actually work great!:)
One amazing year ahead for us for sure!

LOL!!!
We're gonna make that sucker zip around with Avatars in it alright, it's happenin'!!!
By the way, next time those Smithsonian folks call you please tell them they still have to wait a bit longer for my skull, but when they do get it they may have to do a little reconstruction work on it, after all, it did go through the 60's!!!:p

Hey Mark
I didn't realize Saturday the 5th was my niece's birthday party. Unfortunately I won't be able to hold the animator's club meeting :( Do you want to host it for me for this one time. Sorry, can't miss the little girl's second birthday party. I can meet up with you and froo before hand to plan. Maybe it is a lame excuse to miss out because my own birthday, but not the baby's :p |

YIKES!!!

I'm about ~THE~ least qualified person here to hold an Animators meeting!!!:o
Maybe Froo could take the ball and run with it though, animation is one of his favorite things for sure and he knows a heck of a lot more about it than I do!!!
Hopefully Froo can step in on this one and save the day - let's bug him!!!:D

No sweat... that happens when the server crashes or is doing a backup. Either way it will get taken care of pretty quick, try again in an hour or two and it will probably be fine by then.
If it isn't we'll hold the Sunday meeting in the trueSpace Server at the following address but it won't be accessible using truePlay, you can still get there with trueSpace or the trueSpace demo though.
The trueSpace Server network address is this: tsportal.caligari.com
and the portal number is 1111 |

Excellent!
If you have any difficulties just let me know in the Sunday the 30th thread.
If we use the truePlaces Server it will be in the Scriptorium at tpportal.caligari.com and the portal number is 1212, but if that server is still down on Sunday we will just meet on the other trueSpace-only Server which is at tsportal.caligari.com and the portal number there is 1111, it is the "Meetingroom" there on that server.
I'll post directions in the Sunday thread tomorrow before the meeting on setting the Network destinations in trueSpace just in case it is needed.
If both servers are down on Sunday I'll just hold the meeting every day throughout the week instead once the servers are up again.:D

Great! Thanks for the updated report!:)
Still, to be on the safe side I'll post the backup server info here tomorrow in the Sunday meeting thread here. You never know, but that way we'll be prepared in case it happens again.;)
See you Sunday... it's gonna be a very good meeting for sure!:)

Hmmm, I must be in a time warp. The meetings are the second and fourth saturdays of the month. Didn't we just have one last week? Holiday Confusion. I guess we'll wait until Saturday the 12th. Sorry folks. We'll get back on schedule. I don't want to confuse people looking for the meetings coming from the birds of a feather page. Froo, I'll still appreciate your help with the topic. |
