Looks like a toilet hanging in space....looks great with wall and floor pieces!
Will be interesting to see what sits/crawls out of it :D

Back with another update.
I've decided to texture what I have before going on to the next section of the project. I've changed the lighting set-up for these renders back to lightworks, using HDRI for reflections only and a lighting set up I call the 'hedgehog' which gives nice even shadows and lighting but renders much quicker.
The question is which tile texture do you prefer??? Terracotta or a more stereotypical 'chessboard' pattern. Both have their merits. I prefer the black and white for it reflections but the terracotta has a warmer look. BTW the back wall is going to be one colour (probably white) with pealing paint, stains and dirt, if that effects your decision. Oh, and the background colour for the image is still in limbo to.
So basically.... the question is.... which one do you prefer 1 or 2 ?
Edit:
Nothing like a nice model rendered in simple greyscale. Good one. Are these polygons or nurbs? Thanks, all done with Polygons. Stevie no like nasty nurbs :D |

For me the decision is easy Number two for the future number two!;) I like the look of the second one. The checkerboard design has been done countless times.
Nice and dingy carpet too. My appetite is deminished thanks to you!
Edit: I just had an epiphany....are those two worn spots on the carpet from feet or knees..........??????? |

Looking good! Given the background info you've given to the scene I'd opt for the black and white. It has more of a 50's ish type feel of an old council house, bedsit or public convenience, especially with that type of cistern. The warmer floor works better for a more 'once an upper-class' older home but my initial feeling was for the former.
Regardless of which you pick I'm sure it'll look stunning given your texturing skills which are already showing through with these two tests. |

Wow great textures. I think blue maybe an unfortunate color choice for the rug. It first looked like water pooling around the bottom of the toilet. But I do like the way the blue pops against the terracotta because of the complementary colors.
The black and white one has more of the feel of a pulic toilet or maybe prison toilet :p but I think each has it's merits. Would depend on what your theme and mood for the image are. |

They both look good depending on the theme.
The brown tiles give it a homey look in which the dinginess is a little out of place, whereas the checkerboard looks good with the dinginess but it makes me wonder why the floor and rug are so gross yet the toilet itself has been cleaned to a reflective shine.
Overall they are beautiful renders though...would you mind sharing the "hedgehog" technique? Is it just a picture of Ron Jeremy as a global environment map? :D |

Ooh, nice! :D
Agree that #1 has a more classic look....but as mentioned...it's very common.
#2 however....mixed feelings....excellent texture work...but brown?
Looks like someone did #2 in a messy way? Maybe a slightly different color?
If you continue the #2 colour scheme for the toilet...yep, no more eating while following this thread ;)
And of course...I can't stop following the thread, since I'm really curious as to where this is leading ! :D
Almost forgot! The rug is excellent !!!
@hemulin:
Aw, polygons are way cooler than nurbs...and much easier to control :D
Hm, Hedgehog...have a feeling that it's a version of light arrays?
A bunch of directional lights (or spotlights) that are positioned as a hemisphere, pointing at the center? |

Aw, polygons are way cooler than nurbs...and much easier to control Yep that goes for me to.

A bunch of directional lights (or spotlights) that are positioned as a hemisphere, pointing at the center? Yep, sounds about right. Nothing very clever but quite effective.;)
Thanks for the input guys. A bit inconclusive though. I think I'll go with the terracotta for now and maybe ask again when more of the scene is textured.

Well it's nice to know I'm sharing this forum with people who really know their sh.... er...stuff!
So the penguin project got flushed? Oh well Steve your dunny project more than compensates.
Re the tile colours - this is probably a bit self evident but the terracotta looks 'warmer' and the B+W tiles look cold. If I was looking for a quiet spot to read the paper I'd go for version two myself!
Also, I'm with you and Shike when it comes to polygons vs NURBS - polygons are fun, specially with SDS whereas Non Uniform Rational B-Splines get on my nurbs ... er... nerves!
Looking forward to see what happens with this project - it's looking (dare I say it?) shit hot at the moment!:D :D :D |

Back again with a quick texture update. Sorry to those with weak stomachs but I've decided to go the grimy route. I'm quite pleased with the results so far.
Any comment and crits are welcome.

Yep, there goes dinner! What's a pity is I've SEEN places like this.....opps...arrgh....(turns head to look again)....looks great...gotta go.....urghhhh.....
Ok I'm back. It looks really really bad in a good way. Is disgusting a good word? Maybe a roach around the base? What could be worse you say? The only thing I can comment on that I think still need improvement (ha) is the width of the seat (not diameter) still looks too small. Maybe a very small digusting object like this is a good thing.......oh no I looked at it again........ |

Reminds me of a dressing room I was once presented with in Budapest! I did get moved after an almighty artistic hissy fit though!
Fantastic texturing work, as usual. Only thing I notice (apart from the seat) is how did you get the mat around the base as it doesn't have a gap at the back! (unless the bog was built around it!)
Really looking forward to seeing where this is going. |

I think the first time I ever saw any of your work Steve was a beautiful model of a Harley (or some kind of touring bike) with chrome everywhere and excellent textures right down to the exhaust smudges on the pipes; and then there was your "Mech", such noble work; ... but this ... this ... this ... "head" (I have a story about why it's called a head on a boat!)
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the second image because of the extra color, and as a finished image I like that there are no walls or background. It makes the toilet the EXTREME focus of the image and has the feeling of a museum piece.
... by the way Steinie, the worn spots COULD be from a very thirsty dog!
... reminds me of the men's room in a very smokey and dark, basement blues club in Savannah. I used to wait until I got home to ... well ... you know.
Great work Steve!

Seeing where you're going with this #2 was definitely the better choice... er uhm maybe I'd better phrase that differently....
:p
Insane textures here  I really like to warmth of the wood tones with the terracotta floor... not that I'd want to sit on it mind you....
@wickedwitch
Maybe the mat has been there as long as the toilet.... :p

Are you modelling this from memory or do you have a photo of a toilet like this that you ocassionally take a glance at for inspiration?

Thanks for the comment Guys,
Are you modelling this from memory or do you have a photo of a toilet like this that you ocassionally take a glance at for inspiration? Nope I just pop upstairs and take a look at mine. I must have a word with the cleaner! ;)
An extra hot curry and 15 pints of Guiness. A-HA the closest guess yet ;)
how did you get the mat around the base as it doesn't have a gap at the back! Velcro?
No updates for a little while as my pooter has gone down on me (Ooh-er) hope to be up and running again soon.
Thanks again

Euuw! This has to be the only thread where disgust can be considered as flattery ;)
You succeeded with the grime-look again ! Excellent textures ! :D
(you should probably check if your cleaner ever enters your bathroom ;) )
Getting worried about what/who you might put on the seat...*shudders* :D |

Holy Crap! What a crappy hole!
Great work Steve! I once lived next door to a bloke who had a loo even more gross than this - he used to take people on little tours but interestingly enough, he was the only person who ever used it! He claimed that made it more hygenic!!!
Actually your last update puts me in mind of a fabulously gross and icky kids book called 'Fungus the Bogeyman'. He was so revolting that you couldn't stop reading about him! Your grotty potty has a similar feel to it. |

Well I'm finally back with an update....
Not much change, buts that's because I had a bit of a fight to get my system up and running again after a recent crash. But now (looks around frantically for some wood to touch) everything is back to normal and work can progress.

You could make the toilet roll slightly dirty or soggy. The tiles, cistern and pipe are too clean but you probably have something in line for these already. How soon is it till we see what's going to be covering the seat? |

Very cool to see an update on this. :-)
Good work on the pipe texture. I like the drips around the seal to the tank. Can't wait to see what you do with the tiles, toilet paper and tank...
