I remember a while ago Shrike mentioned having Darktree (the full program not the simiont), how does it work with 7.5?
I seem to remember them saying some features didn't tranfer to truespace and i was wondering if thats changed in 7.5.
I think somethign was said about Reflectance shaders not tranfering to VRAy, has that changed now that we have mapped reflectance shaders in vray? |

No problem in LW using Simbionts and I have used a few in Vray but they lose certain features; reflectivity I think. |

Yeah it was vray i was thinking of to be honest, i know the image map in the colour channel works but was wondering if the full Darktree program was worth the money for use with truespace, esspecially if we lose the bridge and the model side in the near future (or ever) |

I've always gotten the feeling that when switching from Model to Workspace or just switching from lightworks to vray that the color texture map is generated....nothing else?
(And if your object doesn't have good UVmapping, the texture will look rather crappy)
For it to work completely, I think that Darkling Simulations would have to make a native Workspace simbiont, compatible with both lightworks and vray.
However, you can use darktree to generate maps for texture/bump/specularity/reflectivity and so on by exporting a uv-mapped object from truespace using the luuv OBJ exporter, and then importing it into darktree. Perfect to generate seamless textures on a complex object.
(this of course opens the question... will luuv work when bridge is removed...or will caligari add obj-export that supports uv-mapping..?)
I showed some of the exporting functionality in this thread:

Thanks shrike, being able to export all the maps looks good and is kind of what i wanted to know, if they could be exported and used in VRay.
Whats your advice then? Wait for 7.6 and see what happens? |

Well I have Darktree and the reason is I got the special offer which
all those get who have payed for Symbiont and that are all those who
have purchased it with the Ray pak ! It was just over 100 $
some months ago ! When I asked Thomas about a full compatability
of Symbionts with VRay his answer was that its a question to pose to
the people who make Symbiont and Darktree ... Darkling !
So I asked them about it and got the answer that some of these
questions will not be addressed before the new version will come out !
That would be Version 3 if you ask me ! Symbiont and Dt work well
with both Symiont and TS 7.5 LW ! Plus Darktree saves out in maps
and therefore can be used with every software ... just not through
a Symbiont.... !A symbiont has to be compatible.
I dont think with 7.6 and Vray there will be a change !
If you are one like me who wants it as an option for symbiont 3.0
and Darktree 3.0 you will have to voice your request like I did
at Darkling ! The more we are the greater the possibility we will get it.
if maps are enough ..... Raypak and a low price on Darktree is a good
option even as a start if you want to update to Darktree 3!

That could take some time... first 7.6 would have to be released, then, as Rayman said, we would have to see if Darkling follows...
However, let's say we get a worst case scenario (just examples since I have no clue or inside info about 7.6 or the next simbionts):
Assume 7.6 can't export UV-mapped OBJ files and doesn't support Luuv any more. (ah, the horror! ;))
Darkling forgets about trueSpace (really hope they don't)
If 7.6 can export UV-mapped stuff to 7.5, you might use 7.5 in a parallell installation just for the OBJ export.
If 7.6 can't transfer UV-mapped stuff to 7.5, you could still use darktree just to create fractal noice maps for use in your favorite pain program (photoshop, paintshop pro, gimp...)
So, basically I see a couple of possible scenarios with Darktree/Simbiont when the bridge is removed:
1. New Simbiont is released with Workspace support for lightworks.
2. New Simbiont is released with Workspace support for lightworks AND vray.
3. No Simbiont support for Workspace, but UVmapped OBJ-files can be exported to darktree to generate seamless maps.
4. None of the above. Darktree can only be used to generate maps.
So, to buy or not to buy... it kinda depends on if any of the four examples above would make you feel like you wasted money....then it might be best to wait awhile.
Personally, I really hope #2 will come true, because procedural shaders are superior to textures when it comes to "amount of detail" / "memory consumption".
Or perhaps 64bit support will give us the option to use 10000x10000 textures on our objects... would like that too! :D |
