Sunday January 6th - Developers Outreach
Complete links and directions to the meetings along with a general description of what the Developers Outreach is all about may be found in the post following this one.
About this upcoming January 6th Sunday meeting:
Hi everyone,
This coming Sunday we will be having our fourth "Developers Outreach" weekly Sunday meeting and workshop, our first one in this very promising new year.
For those of us here in the Caligari Community 2008 holds far greater genuine promise for each of us than any year before it. We stand together in 2008 like soldiers arrayed for victory, empowered with tremendous and growing capabilities. The future is ours for the taking, and those of us joining together in the Developers Outreach workshops have chosen resolutely to seize it immediately together.
We are now pressing forward together by carefully defining and seizing new business opportunities worldwide, opportunities for us each to derive significant financial reward through the utilization of Caligari Immersive Technologies, capabilities we alone posess. Every single success which we achieve together in this regard in the months ahead will not only benefit us directly, it will also immediately provide Caligari with entirely new and very lucrative global income channels, which in turn will no doubt benefit this Community substantially in many important ways.
Caligari has already invested many years in providing us each with a genuinely bright future, culminating now in products so very powerful that we can each now readily market them ourselves in tandem with our own immersive and interactive 3D Design skills worldwide. Now, in 2008 we have chosen to genuinely provide Caligari with a tremendous return on their ongoing investment in each of us, by together propelling Caligari immersive technologies in tandem with our own immersive designs to the very forefront of Virtual World Server Sales worldwide. 2008 will indeed be the year "everyone" takes notice of us, we'll see to that together.;)
This upcoming Sunday Developers Outreach workshop is now our fourth since I started this new concept and format. In the first three meetings we had tremendously exciting collaborative discussions together about all these things and the collective enthusiasm and resolve among us there to pursue it all together at last was formidable and contageous!
With over 25 years of direct executive-level business-to-business Marketing Consultancy experience behind me, however, in the first two of our meetings my own views on the immediate marketability and genuinely lucrative potential of many of these proposed projects met very naturally with a fairly high degree of skepticism among many there with less direct marketing experience, particularly in direct relation to the willingness of real world markets to invest such considerable sums in any "virtual world" endeavors.
In our third meeting, however, all that natural skepticism vanished completely, when at last I had the opportunity to have you each directly meet and openly discuss these matters in detail together with a very real investors representative and negotiator working directly with the European Commission. As he made clear to everyone present, within the framework of the eContent Plus Programme, in which the EC is now investing more than 350 Million in Cultural Content.... the genuine preparedness, willingness, and financial readiness to invest significantly in virtual technologies such as Caligari Immersive Technologies is indeed very real, definite, and immediate... provided that we succeed together in truly providing them with a genuinely sound virtual venue to meet their own very specific needs and objectives.
While this is indeed a very promising "Target-Market" for us it is vital to remember that this is only one of an infinite number of very real, tremendous, lucrative, and immediate global opportunities we can approach together in 2008 and beyond through this new Development Team Workshop approach. We will definitely pursue this one immediately together starting this Sunday, and we will also be choosing and pursuing four additional markets this Sunday for simultaneous development along with this one. If all goes according to plan it is also my intention to have us pursue 5 entirely new markets together simultaneously every month, and to add more markets per month to those 5 as we eventually grow in participants together throughout 2008 as well.
Within the first half of this January 6th Meeting it is my intention to finalize our initial market choices down to 5 total for immediate development. We have already chosen 2 of those five together as immediate "Target-Market" certainties. Once that is achieved we will immediately move on to the next level of focused Team formation and focused Design in relation to each this Sunday, and on Sunday our Teams will begin that design development process on all five projects simultaneously.
It was necessary in this one instance here for me to openly disclose a specific Target-Market which we have chosen to approach together in order to clearly demonstrate to those who may be skeptical of our endeavors here the genuine seriousness and realistic objectives of our collective intent here, but this will be the exception to the rule here from now on as we press together in the months ahead to achieve our objectives in many different marketing directions, with this serving as a vivid example of only one.
In many cases approaching specific new markets can be a somewhat sensitive topic in general, so I would like to ask eveyone participating in these Sunday Developers Outreach meetings and workshops to please refrain as much as possible from openly discussing specific Target-Markets here in the forums, at least until those of us in a given Market-Targeted Team have an opportunity to decide that the time may be right to do so. The Target-Market which I mentioned above was a "one time exception" to what I trust we can maintain as a rule together here, but that specific market too has been described already here in enough detail to convey its practical nature, so I would like to please keep any additional discussion of that specific market within the meetings themselves from now on as well, and I thank you all in advance for your discretion in this regard. We will be all about business together here for sure, but the specifics of our business together for the sake of Caligari, our investors, and ourselves, will often remain our business alone.
2007 was a tremendous year for us all here in the Caligari Community and 2008 is already showing very clear signs of being exponentially better for us all than last year was. Hopefully this new initiative here may in time prove to be something very advantageous for each of us, and toward that end let's give it a go together and see where we can take it in 2008.
See you all again on Sunday!

About all Developers Outreach meetings:
"Developers Outreach" is an extremely active new "Community workshop," focusing very specifically on the following things:
1) 3D Immersive Scene Design and Marketing
Developing our individual skills together (both individually and in focused voluntary teams) in the specific direction of designing immersive scenes for direct personal income. In this part of the workshop we will be examining and developing 3D Immersive Scenes for actual sale, lease, and licensing, worldwide.
There are numerous ways to secure an income through 3D Immersive Scene Design both offline and online (shared space portal packages, shared space server packages, Immersive truePlay CD's, etcetera) and we will be discussing them all together. Beyond that, in each case we will also actually be "going for it," both individually and in teams, the objective at these workshops being actual income rather than passive education.
How long it takes us each to begin securing real income from these workshops will of course be in direct relation to how much time and focus we each invest in these efforts. You alone will be determining in each case how to approach specific markets, although you will have a lot of help in that regard. So you could market inexpensive CD's in your area, or take a more profitable approach and design either portal scenes to license or server packages to market worldwide, the choice is entirely yours. One thing is certain though, there are ways to make a very good income with 3D Immersive Scene Design, and some of them could be genuinely lucrative.
2) Outreach Event Design and Implementation
In addition to identifying and approaching specific markets for income with our individual designs, we will also be "testing the waters" by designing scenes together which will be specifically targeted in their design to attract entirely new markets to shared space and trueSpace investment.
This will entail identifying markets which we decide would be "fun to approach," and designing both Introductory Imersive truePlay CD's and Temporary Portal Scenes together where we will hold occasional events designed to impress them with the potentials of shared space, and invite them to these events directly through the dissemination of Immersive CD's and/or downloadable Immersive truePlay Scenes.
This approach could of course lead to related income in several ways, but the primary distinction between these "outreach" approaches and the "marketing" approaches discussed above will be that these "outreach" approaches will just be more of "a fun thing to try together," more of a "shot in the dark" than a meticulously designed and focused business approach.
3) Shared Space Development Workshop
We all benefit from advancements in shared space, especially those of us with an eye toward profiting from it directly. In the course of the months ahead we will be encountering entirely new ways together to develop shared space and we will be sharing them openly as always.
The genuinely tremendous talent and innovation of the Caligari Community will always be introducing new and more wonderful capabilities and activities to shared space settings in the years ahead.
In the Shared Space Development Workshop we will be constantly watching for and discussing together new ways in which we may adopt and adapt new scripting developments for shared space application and innovation. There will be no focus here on income at all, rather this particular aspect of the Sunday meetings will be focused on how we can immediately utilize new script developments in shared spaces for the benefit of everyone.
Directions to the Developers Outreach meetings:
These meetings are held weekly on Sundays starting at 12:00PM PST (on the Caligari Clock: http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp (http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp) ) but if you can't make it at the start time drop in anytime afterward, they are always very interesting meetings with very lively open discussions.
Initially we will utilize the Scriptorium Portal in truePlace for these meetings, (tpportal.caligari.com / portal 1212) but that will hopefully change very soon as we get underway together in this.
I would like to secure a dedicated portal for this effort on the truePlace server to enable us to work in several development teams on simultaneous projects in the coming year all week long in addition to our weekly meeting being held on the same portal on Sundays. Additionally, having a dedicated portal for these workshops would enable us to readily use it for numerous Temporary Marketing Outreach Events throughout 2008, where we intend to invite new markets to come experience shared space for the very first time through truePlay, with an eye toward their investment.
In the unlikely event of a server crash during any of our meetings we have designated the trueSpace server (tsportal.caligari.com) Meetingroom (portal 1111) as an alternate but since this alternate server is a trueSpace-only server, folks using truePlay to access the meeting in the event of a server crash will not be capable of logging in there with truePlay, they must use the trueSpace7.5Demo or trueSpace7.xx directly.
It is recommended to come to these meetings with XP rather than Vista due to the current (and no doubt temporary) issues with Vista audio in shared spaces, and it is also recommended to come with either trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo rather than truePlay in case of a server crash in which event truePlay will be unable to access our trueSpace-only backup server portal where we would immediately re-convene our meeting.
truePlay Users Only:
If you do come with truePlay1.3 you can access the Scriptorium portal in truePlace by going to post #4 in the following thread and downloading the scene I have provided there which follows the images in that post. That scene can then be unzipped and loaded into truePlay1.3 via "file" and "load" and once loaded you may enter it in First Person Navigation and simply click on the Green Book in that scene which will open a new truePlay window and take you right to the Scriptorium. http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4459 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4459)
trueSpace Users Only:
If you are using either trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo, you can load the RsScn file I have provided in this post here instead... the easel on the left when clicked will harmlessly reset your trueSpace Network destination to the Scriptorium Server and Portal (the primary location for our meeting today), and the easel on the right will harmlessly reset your trueSpace Network destination to the TrueSpace-only Server's Meetingroom portal (the secondary location we will use as a backup room in case of a server crash at the Scriptorium Server).
In both cases a new Login dialog window will pop up where you enter your username and password as always and hit the "Login" button to join us.
Of course if you are already familiar with how to reset your Network destinations manually you can simply do that instead... this is just the "lazy man's approach" to get there... your choice.:p
Manual Network Settings:
Scriptorium Address = tpportal.caligari.com / port# 1212
BackupServer Address = tsportal.caligari.com / port# 1111
Lazy Man's Approach:

Sounds awesome Mark. Will we be using "Voice" during this meeting? I just need to know which system to use before I log into shared space. Thanks for all your hard work on this....

Thanks Steve,
Yeah I recommend that everyone come with XP for now so the opportunity to conduct rapid voice discussions is at least an option for everyone else, whether I use voice or not for the majority of my own input.
The thing is, with me, since I have to serve as the coordinator and director in all this, I have to put the majority of whatever I have to say into text chat rather than voice for the benefit of those present who don't have headsets as well as those with any clientside audio probs or Vista. I also have an issue with my mic sometimes being intermittent which is definitely a clientside issue on my own system.
So it's always best to have the option to engage in rapid collaborative verbal discussions as well as simultaneous chat discussions at these particular meetings since we do tend to cover so much ground so rapidly together.
I was re-reading what I wrote above in that first post and it also occured to me that some folks might consider 5 simultaneous projects per month to be a lot to take on. It really isn't at all though because when you really think about the process of creating interactive immersive scenes, many of the scenes used for different purposes do in fact share many commonalities between them, making it very easy to create scripted interactive features in one scene which can be added to another in minutes rather than days, and the same goes for many 3d objects common to various types of scenes. Often things won't need to be created from scratch at all, rather they will simply need to be very easily and rapidly modified to adapt them to another project being simultaneously conducted by the Teams.
People used to wonder why I used to build so many projects simultaneously when I first got hold of trueSpace7.51, and the simple reason was that it's very easy to do when many of the components of a typical scene are in fact "typical" and can be instantly added to another or modified and adapted to a different use in another very rapidly.
Basically, once we all decide on the 5 target-markets this Sunday based on market practicality and development cycle to market, that examination of each will also cause us to focus deeply on each in terms of design requirements inherent to that development cycle of each. Once we do that together it will become more clear to everyone what choices of "Team Roles" in relation to each will be needed in that development and everyone can choose where they would like to contribute their (largely part time) efforts that month accordingly.
Some of us will focus more on certain projects than others of course and of course each of us has additional projects and real-life responsibilities which will keep us from full-time focus on any one particular project... that's a given. Nevertheless, in Teams the work will actually be very easy in some projects and many project elements can be easily and rapidly adapted to another, allowing us more time per month to focus on those particular projects which require more attention from us all.
I'm confident that together the development cycles in general will go pretty rapidly even in the beginning, and every month it should naturally become a bit easier and faster all by itself.
Each month I'm sure at least one of our monthly projects will be "generic" too, appealing simultaneously to a great many potential markets whos needs and investment objectives are largely the same. Those will be the most fun to do together I suspect, and when completed can each be marketed very easily and rapidly all year long whenever we choose to do so.
This should all be fun actually, even the sale closing aspects of each, which in fact I truly enjoy the most of all. Each of us has strengths and weaknesses to bring to the table in all this but at the end of the day it is how well we work together on it all and how much fun we all have doing so that really counts... because nothing is more contageous than sincere enthusiasm shared by a Team on a Project, and when potential Project Investors encounter that they too find it contageous and refreshing, assuming their needs and objectives have been addressed by that Project, but we'll always see carefully to that, since that is the very basis of all our Project choices in the first place.;)
Great times ahead.:D

aright folks! As Mark pointed out this is the Sunday where we will select our 5 projects. So be putting your thinking caps on and seriously consider which projects you'd like to work on, and also, what type of role(s) you want to perform: scriptor, modeller, texture artist, animator, etc.
Last week we had a great turnout. Projects were discussed, issues were debated and resolved, which is important in any team discussion. Let's continue this trend.
This is the first meeting of the year. 2008 feels strong so far! If you are curious what this is all about feel free to come on Sunday! There's pleny of room!
Mark has a good point about object reuse. Objects and scripts which are developed can be reused and modified for other applications. This will shorten the development cycle dramatically. ALso, with the number of people we have in the meetings, and the level of collaboration we've seen, we'll do quite well. There is a high level of teamwork spirit here too.
This is a very good opportunity for us, as a community, to work together, and develop (and sell) a truly marketable product.
Lookin forward to seeing you there!

I do appreciate this community, you all are great at this stuff. But I think what sets this 3D community apart from the others is that you all are willing to help and share and what not. As a Noob, man I feel right at home. One of these days I will shock this community...lol..I will render something...lol. Thanks for all your help, you Guys and Gals are keen, great, swell, awesome, you'all just ROCK. |

Well come on Sunday Scala! The fastest way to learn is to get in there and dig in and ask questions, and work on a team, or several teams.
See you there!

Yeah this Community does rock and we're definitely on the move now too!!!

The funny thing about building immersive interactive scenes together like this is that it doesn't feel like work at all... it's actually pretty easy and it's always fun to do!
Sure, we can and will take on very complex projects too, but we will always be doing fun ones every month simultaneously too as a rule in all this, and the more of us working on them all the merrier. There are so very many markets worldwide and so very many ways to attact them to all this that there will always be plenty of room in all this for everyone to find Team Roles they really enjoy and contribute to.
I just can't wait to see how many of us here will be rocking with all this once Caligari rolls out their next few products and versions!:)

Sure will be a very fun year indeed!

Just a quick note folks,
We will also have an interactive demonstration Sunday of a new tool which we will be able to immediately use now in our designs for interactive instructional settings both online and offline which has a direct bearing on several of the marketing choices we have already discussed.
This will be a very exciting meeting Sunday which you really shouldn't miss.
The turnout at each of our previous Sunday meetings has been very large, enthusiastic, dynamic, and creative, with great collaborative discussions being the rule rather than the exception. There has also been a steady increase in the number of people participating in these Sunday meetings that I'm very sure will be growing even more rapidly than it already has.
If you have been to one of our Sunday meetings before you know this is true, but for this particular Sunday meeting I am requesting that everyone who has been there before please be sure to attend this specific meeting... we are going places very rapidly now together and your participation will be vital to us all as we move forward in January.
If you have never been to one of these Sunday meetings before you too should definitely attend this next one on the 6th. These meetings are extremely exciting and informative so you will definitely be glad you did.
Thanks everyone... see you all there.

Like Mark hinted at, I have a simple little scene that demonstrates how we can incorporate multiple forms of media (html, flash, video, audio, etc.) along with our interactive 3d scenes without leaving the truePlay environment. It's a simple example but the concept works pretty good. It's very likely that many markets out there will find this ability very useful. ;)
I just discovered that the scene isn't designed well for shared space and I don't know that I can redesign it in time. So I will post a link to the scene for download at the meeting so everyone can open it and try it out with truePlay locally. That will probably be better anyway since that will avoid people having to wait in line to mess around with it.
It should be a fun meeting. See you guys there. :) |

By the way Matthew... remember that powerpoint presentation you did months ago in the Meetingroom at one of our early Scriptors meetings? If you can find those files we could examine the use of that method as well tomorrow. The more methods for all this the better I think.
It also occured to me that we could have the summoned panel from the truePlay scene you are demonstrating tomorrow perform a different kind of function as well, we could run external programs from those buttons very easily too, which in the case of a demonstration CD could be bundled with the scene file for use as well.
I am also going to see if I can make and script a special three sided informational panel which hides in the wall behind an object of interest in a scene and is activated, animated, timed, and deactivated based on proximity and/or a 3d button in the scene. I doubt I'll have that ready by this Sunday though but it shouldn't be too hard to do now at all.
Great stuff, thanks!

Just a headsup folks.
I had a sneak preview of what Dele is talking about. man is it Cool! I have not had a chance to look at the script code yet but heck, if I'm excited about it, students will be HYPED!
Every one of these meetings is really a blast. Never a dull moment. I've never seen such collaboration since I've been on these forums; items developed (plugins, etc.) have always been solo projects. While those efforts have generated some side-income for the plugin makers, the projects discussed here in the Sunday meetings have Huge Potential. With teamwork, we can do anything with truespace. It takes effort, and the more team members the better off we are. This seems like a major undertaking, and let's face it, it is. But we can do it together, if we pull together as a team.

Hahahaha!!!:p
truth be told I do get about 3 and 1/2 hours of sleep every once in a while, usually after about 16 hours of relatively non-stop computer activities, and every once in a long while I really crash.... comatose... 16 hours straight of "Don't wake me, I don't care if the house is burning down."

Yeah, Matthew's coding there really is very versatile, there's a lot of very different ways it can be utilized. I've been thinking about it over the last two tall cups of coffee this morning in fact.
It occurs to me that one very nice variation on it for instance would be to have many objects of interest spaced evenly along both sides of a long walkway where the lighting is adequate but subdued, perhaps by the shadow of an overhead structure or lattice, and then as one came into immediate proximity with any given object along the walkway an overhead lamp directly above the object would gradually increase in illumination (triggered by avatar proximity) until you reached the object, at which point a (second proximity triggered) voice heard only by that closest avatar (clientside effect - very easy) would speak a brief statement about that particular object (I'm thinking here of the "talking rings" voice in the movie "The Time Machine"), and just as in the case of all the other objects along the walkway, if the visitor desires additional information about that specific object in the way of dedicated web pages, pdf files or videos they could immediately examine while standing before the object they need only to click the object to summon a panel which provides that on the spot.
Lots of ways to use this, that one there would be very easy to do and the effect would be kind of elegant I think.:)

You're so right! I constantly forget to do that in the chat panel after I have the audio set in the properties dialog! Hahaha!:o
It's always fun when I come into a room full of people all charged up and enthusiastic and start a longwinded explanation of the cool things we're going to do together that day... only to find in the end that no one besides me heard a word of it because I forgot to hit the "Voice" button before I started to talk! LOL!:p
And then there's those times when I hit the "Voice" button and wondered for a while why no one was speaking when so many people also had Voice on, only to discover after 10 minutes or so that I had forgotten to un-mute the audio properties in Windows! Hahaha!:p
Yep.... I'll pay attention to those today for sure! Thanks for the reminder!;) |

Thanks Scala3D. It is a pretty simple concept example though. It could be expanded to be much more accurate and educational. The concept should be usable though. I posted the scene in the scriptorium if anyone else is interested in checking it out.

Mark thanks for being the moderator, I know that is not an easy task.....lol, not with me around anyway. Poor Mark, I give him such a hard time at these meetings. :p I hope that I don't drive you too crazy Mark. I'm totally on board, I just like digging in the details. ;)
Edit: Oh, and that car was awesome trueBlue! Fantastic work! :D  |

Thanks guys, it was a great meeting for sure!
All 5 markets are determined and already underway, many details were clarified, we had a new member show up (welcome ghost--scout and you are always welcome at our meetings as is everyone here in the Community), and we also had some great demonstrations for sure, in fact I'm still seeing one live here and it is 5:17 minutes later!:p
Great people, great discussions, and a great future we share together here!:)
Thanks everyone, we're definitely on a roll here together now!

Yes, sorry TrueBlue I did not know that you designed that car awesome work. Speaking of missing details, well we now have a TeamSpeak server. I installed the server application on my system, then I installed the Client side application (All free). Now I need a volunteer that has a working Microphone and headset. I believe this will help during these meetings, plus once we break up into teams, we can create different team voice channels on this TeamSpeak server, so we all won't be talking over each other. Shoot me an IM if you would like to help me test this idea. I will than set you up a login name and password. Below is where you can download the Teamspeak client program. For example I used "Scala3D" as my nickname that will showup in the teamspeak program when I login. I also used "Scala3D" as the LogInName so they can be the same name. Maybe I can have this working by our next meeting.....
TeamSpeak Client software download:

Download the "TeamSpeak 2 Client" version 2.0.32.60
and the "TeamSpeak 2 Client (Updated Executable) version 2.0.33.7 |

yes, these meetings are fun and productive.
A lot of discussion occurs; sometimes there's multiple discussions at once.
Since these meetings are evolving rapidly, I would recommend posting a meeting agenda in advance, so we're all on the same page when we arrive. Any new issues/concerns/ideas could then be 'earmarked' (someone makes a note of it) for discussion when we have covered our agenda, or, add that item to a future meeting's agenda. That would make it easier for us to 'stay on topic'.
Very good progress indeed. I am glad the 5 initial projects have been chosen. That is a project milestone, folks.
