I thought the same thing about caligari getting in relations with this guy when I saw he was in talks with daz. I hope he does not sell it to daz is all. It is a great standalone app but it woud be awesomely cool as a ts plugin. Maybe when ts releases an sdk we can talk him into it. |

Behzad pm'd me a link to 3d brush late last night. I had seen you guys talking about it but hadn't checked it out yet. I didn't realize there was a deal going on. This is one of the few times I had the money when a deal was going on so I swiped it up right in time. :)
I like sculpting in silo, but this looks great for detailing and painting. I really like how you can work with layers and it integrates nicely with Photoshop. I also like the ability to make an ambient occlusion map. Actually I just tried it and the OC map translates into a layer into Photoshop for blending. Very cool. Baking OC into the texture should help make real time tS scenes look better. Still not as good as baking GI into the whole scene, but I would think it should help things look better on a per object basis anyway.
I'll have to to do some tests now to see how I can get things to look in tS. :) |

Hi Behzad - nice to see you back. I've only just seen this thread and I'm not sure how unbiased any comments I might make are given that I'm a HUGE fan of tS.
What I can say is that a lot really depends on what you want to do. With tS 7.5 there is so much that is available to the user that it's almost like a whole range of apps bundled into one.
Spacekdet and others are not so keen on the bridge - personally I love it. I can turn it on and off as needed, wander across to tS 6.6 to use old tried and trusted tools and then wander back to the workspace to play with the new character animation/bones and the great new DX9 real time possibilities. I might be the only one but I hope the bridge stays around for a while yet.
I still do a lot of my modelling on the model (tS 6.6) side because I prefer many of the modelling conventions (mainly I often over-build a mesh and then remove the geometry I don't want and the workspace methods of dealing with deleting specific vertices or edges don't suit my modelling style in that regard). Having said that the workspace modelling tools are great - they just utilise slightly different (and in many cases, way better) modelling conventions.
The customiseability alone makes tS 7.5 worth a good look IMO. I have created a selection of different layouts for different purposes and can access them with a single click - sheer bloody brilliance IMO!.
Currently I'm almost finished building a model of a 1937 London Double decker bus - this is being done entirely in model side using LW shaders and a custom designed screen layout.
I'm also building several 3d immersive environments for use in first person mode - this uses both model side and workspace modelling tools and the workspace realtime renderer. This also is a project with it's own dedicated layout.
Finally I'm slowly getting into animation for which I have yet another purpose built interface.
I don't know of any app, anywhere, at any price that offers that degree of flexibility.
A last word on the Link Editor - I was not too keen on this at first, thinking "I'm an artist not a programmer". However I now see the LE as something like a swimming pool with a shallow end and a deep end - I've no need (at this stage anyway) to venture into the deep end of scripting and so on (though I've dog-paddled around on the surface). On the other hand I'm becoming quite proficient at splashing around in the shallow end - using the LE to control lights and textures is really not any harder (though perhaps initially a bit less intuitive) than doing it via any other type of interface. Once you learn the basics you can do so much with it that I soon lost any fear of or resistance too the LE.
This has been a long answer to your simple question "Should i get back to using TS?". Here's a short answer: Hell YES!
In the interests of fairness I should add a negative observation - the one thing that constantly acts to interrupt my work flow is the lack of an effective index to the manual. Given the design concept behind the manual I can see why an index is impractical but I'm basically old-fashioned and grew up learning to use the index in any reference material.
Hope this helps, and I hope you'll stick around. |

Counter point from Steinie. Behzad stated his last version was "6" so the Model side will have nothing new. Most of the tools have not been rewritten for workSpace yet. He would have to purchase VRay if his goal was to only use the new side and turn off the bridge as DX9 is his only other option. So if you look at the New TS vs having ts6 I would suggest waiting until it is truly done.
Remember things in ts6 made him move to another program to begin with. He'll just be frustrated if he started using this version now. Case in point Spacekdet or Tiles.
I agree the new trueSpace is fantastic if you can visualize it's future. Currently it is a WIP. For a new user it would be a no brainer must buy. They would be in a candy store. |

I can see why you might say that Bob but I just want to repeat - it depends what you want to use it for.
Currently I get way more use from the workspace side than I do the model side - though that can change depending on my desired outcome.
I do not have Vray nor do I particularly have a great need for it (at this stage anyway). V-ray is a long way down on my list of desired software, particularly as it still lacks layered materials.
I can fulfill the vast majority of my ray-tracing needs using the legacy tools and on the workspace side I find the dx9 shaders to be perfectly fulfilling to use.
I'm not too concerned about the future of trueSpace - I'm using tS7.5 now and finding it to be great.
I really don't understand the perspective that says the bridge is a bad thing or that it's preferable to use either the model/6.6 side or the workspace side. We have full control over when and how we use the bridge and I can only see that as a great advantage and an incredibly useful feature rather than a drawback or an indicator that something is missing.
Admittedly I'm approaching trueSpace with the attitude of 'how can I best use this as it is' rather than 'how can trueSpace be better'. At the end of the day the two most favourite ways I have to spend time are eating my wifes superb food and working with trueSpace (as it is rather than how it could or should be). |

Thank you guys, the reason I moved on was there was a big haul before TS7 came out and I am sure you remember how everyone was waiting with anticipation. During that time many users like myself left and found other softwares.
The 3d market has grown over the past years as you know and much affordable too. I do not want to name any softwares because that is not my intention here.
I think at this time I will sit back and see what will happen to TS and watch you guys make amazing art. I will stick to learning my new software that I have invested, who knows what is next. For me I like to invest in learning something that will have the support. I was disappointed in caligari during the dry spell that happened until ts7 was released by that time i was gone, kinda hard for me to start all over again, I guess.
I still like ts because it was the first software the introduced me to 3d and its ease of use. |
