Sunday January 20th - Developers Outreach
Please note that we have just changed to a new dedicated portal which Caligari has provided for our Developers Outreach use only and we will no longer be meeting in the Scriptorium portal which we used to use. (Except on Tuesday nights)
Complete links and directions to the meetings along with a general description of what the Developers Outreach is all about may be found in the post following this one at:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=57944&postcount=2 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=57944&postcount=2)
About this upcoming January 20th Sunday meeting:
Hi everyone,
This coming Sunday we will be having our sixth "Developers Outreach" weekly Sunday meeting and workshop together.
Roman has been invited to this coming meeting and plans to be there this Sunday, he is very pleased with what the Community has accomplished here in pulling together for this effort and would like to express that in person to you each, so please be sure to set everything else aside Sunday to attend this particular meeting, I'm sure it will be a very great day for us all.:)
Our scheduled agenda items for this coming Sunday are the following:
1) Developers Outreach discussion with Roman.
Whenever Roman arrives he will of course have our undivided attention to discuss whatever he wishes with us. This will be the very first opportunity he has had in his schedule to do this and I know he is looking forward to it.:)
I have been keeping Roman informed as to our progress and objectives all along in this and of course he agrees it is all a very nice development for both Caligari and our Community here. We already have several extremely exciting projects and objectives to share with him in greater detail now as well, so this should be a very lively and enthusiastic discussion in general.:)
2) Portal Prototype evaluation and enhancement.
We will be examining several brand new portal prototypes and scripted objects directly related to our current "priority project." At least 4 or 5 of my own and of course everyone is encouraged to bring their own as well.
These will be "proof of concept" prototypes subject to constructive critique, alteration, enhancement, or rejection as we move on together toward creating a definitive portal design set for that initial priority project in the next couple of weeks.
There have been quite a few very interesting approaches to this particular project which have come from several of you since Sunday, and whether we end up incorporating them into this project or another, just like my own prototypes we will be establishing a "portal parts yard" in all this development work as we go, with each "part" being useful in one project or another saving us a great deal of development time in the months ahead as this all comes together. Many of these "parts" will be easily and rapidly interchangeable between many types of projects.
3) Animation Use in Interactivity - A Collaborative Discussion
This will be an open discussion on creative ways we can incorporate animation into existing and future portals and projects with an eye toward establishing deeper immersion and interactivity in shared spaces.
4) Special Effects Development for Portals - A Collaborative Discussion
This will be an open discussion on creative ways we can develop and incorporate Scripted Special Effects into existing and future portals and projects, again with an eye toward establishing deeper immersion and interactivity in shared spaces.
5) Artificial Intelligence Development for Portals - A Collaborative Discussion
We have already discussed AI scripting development in relation to our "Kids Project," and although I do want us to refrain from discussing the marketing aspects of our projects in the forum here I do believe we should share with the Community here a bit more about this particular project more openly.
The "Kids Project" is an ongoing project we intend to contribute to throughout the year and perhaps beyond. As originally discussed it involves so far the development of portal scenes for Non-Profit Group and Educational Group usage where "kids," especially terminal, handicapped, or bedridden kids, but all kids would be the intended end-users of the portal designs, worldwide.
The reason I'm bringing this up here under the heading of "Artificial Intelligence Development," is that we already plan to utilize trueSpace Scripted AI for this particular project in some very cool new ways together in the months ahead.
One of these ways will be to use AI in a "Zoo Portal," where whimsical moving creatures will not only perform for the kids, but actually speak to them by name as they are approached by them.
Another use of AI which we have planned for this project entails the creation of "Smart Pet Guides," which a child may select on entering a portal and it will follow them around all session, speaking to the child about points of interest in the scene as it approaches them, triggered by proximity.
These are only two of an infinite number of ways we could incorporate trueSpace AI Scripting into online scenes for very good purposes, and like a great many things we tend to discuss together on Sundays this is the kind of thing anyone with a good idea could contribute to anytime, and everyone in the Community is welcome to attend our meetings as always.
Got an idea for a kids project? We're listening, and this is your chance to make that idea count in 2008.:)
This will be one very good meeting folks.
See you on Sunday!

About all Developers Outreach meetings:
"Developers Outreach" is an extremely active new "Community workshop," focusing very specifically on the following things:
1) 3D Immersive Scene Design and Marketing
Developing our individual skills together (both individually and in focused voluntary teams) in the specific direction of designing immersive scenes for direct personal income. In this part of the workshop we will be examining and developing 3D Immersive Scenes for actual sale, lease, and licensing, worldwide.
There are numerous ways to secure an income through 3D Immersive Scene Design both offline and online (shared space portal packages, shared space server packages, Immersive truePlay CD's, etcetera) and we will be discussing them all together. Beyond that, in each case we will also actually be "going for it," both individually and in teams, the objective at these workshops being actual income rather than passive education.
How long it takes us each to begin securing real income from these workshops will of course be in direct relation to how much time and focus we each invest in these efforts. You alone will be determining in each case how to approach specific markets, although you will have a lot of help in that regard. So you could market inexpensive CD's in your area, or take a more profitable approach and design either portal scenes to license or server packages to market worldwide, the choice is entirely yours. One thing is certain though, there are ways to make a very good income with 3D Immersive Scene Design, and some of them could be genuinely lucrative.
2) Outreach Event Design and Implementation
In addition to identifying and approaching specific markets for income with our individual designs, we will also be "testing the waters" by designing scenes together which will be specifically targeted in their design to attract entirely new markets to shared space and trueSpace investment.
This will entail identifying markets which we decide would be "fun to approach," and designing both Introductory Imersive truePlay CD's and Temporary Portal Scenes together where we will hold occasional events designed to impress them with the potentials of shared space, and invite them to these events directly through the dissemination of Immersive CD's and/or downloadable Immersive truePlay Scenes.
This approach could of course lead to related income in several ways, but the primary distinction between these "outreach" approaches and the "marketing" approaches discussed above will be that these "outreach" approaches will just be more of "a fun thing to try together," more of a "shot in the dark" than a meticulously designed and focused business approach.
3) Shared Space Development Workshop
We all benefit from advancements in shared space, especially those of us with an eye toward profiting from it directly. In the course of the months ahead we will be encountering entirely new ways together to develop shared space and we will be sharing them openly as always.
The genuinely tremendous talent and innovation of the Caligari Community will always be introducing new and more wonderful capabilities and activities to shared space settings in the years ahead.
In the Shared Space Development Workshop we will be constantly watching for and discussing together new ways in which we may adopt and adapt new scripting developments for shared space application and innovation. There will be no focus here on income at all, rather this particular aspect of the Sunday meetings will be focused on how we can immediately utilize new script developments in shared spaces for the benefit of everyone.
Directions to the Developers Outreach meetings:
EDIT: We have just received a new temporary dedicated portal from Caligari for all our DO use so all the directions in this post here have been updated to reflect this change and we will no longer be meeting in the Scriptorium (Except on Tuesday nights).
Our new temporary dedicated portal is called "InterPortal 1" and is on the truePlaces Server (tpportal.caligari.com) at server port number 1660.
For the convenience of trueSpace and truePlay users I have attached two RsScn format scene files to the end of this post right after two screenshots which depict them.
Please be sure to download the correct scene file for your intended use (ie: trueSpace or truePlay), since each scene will only function when loaded into the correct program, either trueSpace or truePlay, but not both.
These meetings are held weekly on Sundays starting at 12:00PM PST (on the Caligari Clock: http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp (http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp) ) but if you can't make it at the start time drop in anytime afterward, they are always very interesting meetings with very lively open discussions.
In the unlikely event of a server crash during any of our meetings we have designated the trueSpace server (tsportal.caligari.com) Meetingroom (portal 1111) as an alternate but since this alternate server is a trueSpace-only server, folks using truePlay to access the meeting in the event of a server crash will not be capable of logging in there with truePlay, they must use the trueSpace7.5Demo or trueSpace7.xx directly.
It is recommended to come to these meetings with XP rather than Vista due to the current (and no doubt temporary) issues with Vista audio in shared spaces, and it is also recommended to come with either trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo rather than truePlay in case of a server crash in which event truePlay will be unable to access our trueSpace-only backup server portal where we would immediately re-convene our meeting.
Manual Server Settings: (for setting the destination yourselves in trueSpace):
DefServer= tpportal.caligari.com
DefServerPort= 1660
LazyMan's Approach: (load the correct scene provided below and click the link)
Below the two screenshots here are the actual RsScn files for download and use within trueSpace or truePlay - be sure to download the correct one for your intended use:
If you wish to attend the meeting using trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo, download and then load into trueSpace the scene named "SundayLinks.RsScn"
If you wish to attend the meeting using truePlay download and then load into truePlay the scene named "SundayTruePlayLink.RsScn"
If you have loaded the correct scene for your program clicking on the Developers Outreach link in each will bring you right to us if the server is not down at the time and if you enter the correct username and password.
See you there! |

I hope I can make it on time this week!!!
I hope so too Ghost--Scout!
If you are late you'll miss a few things but don't let the time stop you from dropping in if it's at all possible, there will be plenty of very interesting things on Sunday for you to join in on with us no matter when you show up.
Having you join us last Sunday was a real pleasure too, you'll always be very welcome at all of our meetings whenever you have a chance to join us.
Anytime we are so fortunate here as to have a U.S. Marine join our ranks in shared space is a day we can be very proud of. It's an honor to have you with us and we'll do our best to make you feel right at home.
In fact, although we never did have a chance last Sunday to go over this with you (but we will make the time this coming Sunday) I should tell you that a few of us here have been tossing trueSpace scripting ideas around for a long time in direct relation to designing homing projectiles and avatar held launchers of various kinds for future shared space gaming portals and events.:D
It's also true that whatever we can create for multi-user online portals can also be experienced offline by a single user with the whole deal saved to disk and run through the free truePlay program even by folks without trueSpace, so you can share it all offline as well as actually experience it together in realtime online.
It probably won't happen overnight here, but the capability does exist now in trueSpace scripting so it really is inevitable for us, and there's no doubt a lot of fun to be had blasting each other's avatars and scripted bad guys into the next dimension!:D
I'm not sure if you're familiar yet with the "Captain's Blog" thread here from Roman (Caligari's C.E.O.), but every once in a while he pops a new post in there giving folks some little (but very powerful) hints and glimpses into what's coming soon from all the work behind the scenes at Caligari. One of those recent posts has a video in it and a few still screenshots taken of a moving (extremely fluid and lifelike) Artificial Intelligence Guided (think about that one....:D) shark from the video where the shark collides with objects and breaks them as he does.
Here's the thread and the post is near the end of it:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=893 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=893)
Now the reason I'm pointing that out is that if we can now guide a shark into objects we can guide other things if we wish too, and on impact have the targets break up with the new breakable object capability that Roman shared with everybody there in that post.
Put all that together and it looks like we're going to have a lot of fun very soon scripting all kinds of games now for shared space portals and events.
We do already have existing script here for avatars to pick up and carry objects and place them on demand, so it's all coming together now in 2008 and this year will see the beginning of some of the wildest game-like realtime multi-user online activities we've ever been able to develop together here.:D
So if you can hang in here with us for a couple of more months maybe we can put some really great new stuff together online for you and your buddies at Camp Lejeune, it would be a blast for us all to do together and the likelyhood of it all here now is looking better than ever to actually make it happen.:)
Welcome home Ghost--Scout, you're in for a great ride with us!;)

Guys, can I get some help with something. I think it's a VISTA problem but I need verification before I reformat my Harddrive. Ok, this is what I am typing to do. I want to slowly rotate the "Pharaoh" object about the Z axes or the "Yaw" axes. Frootee the other night show me how to connect variables in the LE and attach them to objects to make them rotate in place. He was able to get the "Pharaoh" object to rotate in shared-space. But when I use that same object he created i can't move it, but it does rotate and does not disappear. When I try to do the same thing for example:
Timer Event frame (blue) connects to BinaryOp A (red), BinaryOp Result (blue) connects to ExpandIn Yaw (red), ExpandIn Matrix (blue) connects to Pharaoh Matrix (red)
When I connect the last link i.e. <ExpandIn Matrix (blue) connects to Pharaoh Matrix (red)> Pharaoh object completely disappears from the WorkPlace window, but in the LE that object is still connected?
I am afraid this is a VISTA issue, but I was wondering has any other VISTA users encountered this problem before?
Thanks for your time.
Regards,

Did you right click on the Matrix input on the Pharaoh node and select expand to expand it? Or did you reuse an expanded matrix?
It may be best to expand the Matrix from the Pharaoh object to link the binary op into.
The only other thing I can think is that maybe the scale is set to 0,0,0. This would cause it to disappear.
If these ideas don't work perhaps you could upload your scene. Then I could probably figure out what's happening.

Scala3D
Yikes.... No need to do brain surgery on the baby when he stubs his toe!:p
No sweat guy... I will be around here all day and most of the night in and out of shared space working on a bunch of stuff. What you want to do here is no problem, I can help you do this easily.
These guys are right, the timer fields need to be reset to default by first unchecking the activate checkbox and then right-clicking on each of the timer feilds and selecting "reset" from each popup menu.
It's also probable that in addition to that you will have to note where all the input and output connections attach (at each end of each which is attached to something) on the expanded matrix of the object - then delete the expanded matrix, reset the object to 0 0 0 and then expand the matrix again and hook it up exactly as the previous one was hooked up and then click the timer activation checkbox.
Once you've done this a few times you can do it with one eye open and it only takes a few seconds.... sure beats a hard drive format though!:p
I can do this for you anytime today or tonight in shared space, will only take a minute. Just call me when you are ready or drop me an e-mail.
No problema!:)

Meetingplace Update:
I will be changing all the posts above in this thread later today to reflect the fact that we will be meeting in a brand new dedicated portal this Sunday which has just been provided to the Developers Outreach by Caligari.:)
Note: always back up your scenes from in here when you are leaving them there since any one of us may come in and delete everything there to work on different projects there. As always, never exceed 5 meg total in scene objects and always use the RsObj format for everything you introduce there, thanx.;)
The new portal is called "InterPortal 1"
The server is:
tpportal.caligari.com
and the portal number is:
1660
It will be accessible by both trueSpace and truePlay.
EDIT: I have updated post number two above with the correct new portal information as well as two new scripted scene files, one for use in trueSpace and the other for use in truePlay which when loaded and clicked will take folks right to us in the new portal. http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=57944&postcount=2 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=57944&postcount=2)
Now we can each use this for all our dev work all week long instead of using the Scriptorium portal, and we will use this for this coming Sunday's meeting.
Thank you Caligari!:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Man am I ever happy to see you joining us on Sunday!
Actually the time it starts is based on 12 Noon California time... which is around 3 or 4 hours behind Florida time, so you may be correct there with 3:00 PM Florida time, I'm not sure (I live in Mountain time here).
The Caligari Clock is at the following link and when that clock strikes NOON we begin together in our new dedicated Developers Outreach portal. http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp (http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp)
I sure hope that you can make it, I really want to go over a lot of ideas with you in those scheduled collaborative discussions (mentioned in post 1 above) for sure! Your input on all that would be very important to us all.
This particular meeting may well run on for an additional five hours in fact with all that we plan to do and discuss on Sunday, so even if you have to show up late and miss a few things it will still be well worth the trouble to make it there if you can.
I hope you do buddy, I'd love to bounce ideas with you there for sure!:D

Not that I'm trying to change any of the focus areas, but as a side project there is a market with the military. Take the VBS (http://virtualbattlespace.vbs2.com/) series by Bohemia Interactive. That first person shooter/simulator populates all of the computer lab simulation centers in the Marine Corps. I don't know what the army, navy and air force use but with some reference materials and in-service technical advisers even a small program such as the Forward Observer Personal Computer Simulation is possible. (FOPCSIM; http://www.nps.navy.mil/cs/Research/vissim/ForwardObserver/main.htm ;
http://www.delta3d.org/article.php?story=20041115153320456&topic=projects )
FOPCSIM is something we use to practice calling for artillery support. I can provide reference material and personal experience for most small arms and some heavier weapons such as the M220E4 TOW 2 guided missile system, the M136/AT4 and various others.
As for my place in the meetings I'm not the greatest and most experienced modeler or script writer, I'm still learning my way around Truespace's interface and learning how to model within Truespace. Believe it or not I'm actually finding the 3dBuzz gamespace tutorials to be a really helpful source of information.
Regardless I'm happy to help in any way I can! |

3PM Florida time Noko.
BTW I thought you were in Boston? :)
=================================
Mark: Suggestion:
How about putting a set of bullet points on a screen in the space, so everyone knows what we're going to cover? It'd be a great reference during the meeting
so we stay on track.
The bullet points would be a 1 line statement, indicating the topic, and the time allotted to it.
ghost-scout: Nice! This will definitely be an area of interest. I am interested in writing code to handle the various communication interfaces for military equipment:
IBDL, GBDL, etc. It would be very interesting to be able to connect to end items (real hardware running in real time) for simulations.

We're always keeping our eyes open here for markets to approach and the US Military would certainly be a great client to have!:)
Let's talk about it more on Sunday together when we're all in one place.
Those 3dbuzz tutorials are great!
We're all in various stages of learning here, I'm fairly good at a couple of things and terrible at many more, for instance, but in the months ahead we'll all be helping one another in sharpening our skills through the Sunday workshops and the weeklong activity they are already spawning. So as we get together and work together we will also learn together and advance together. This new DO approach will be great for us all in that way in the months ahead for sure.
See you Sunday!

Can do. I think I'll avoid the alotted time restriction though, lots of key people in various discussions may arrive at different times all day long so I'd like to keep the options open on when we discuss particular topics accordingly.
Having a board there to inspire topic relevence is a good idea though and easy to do.
Thanks for the idea.:)

You know... in the collaboration section of the Caligari website it says that in the near future Avatars will be as realistic as the environment they are in. So I figure the Cones we have come to know and love will be on the way out whenever that happens.
In light of that I guess it is time to get rid of all our Cone-related stuff pretty soon so I decided to start by giving this away here today.:D
Enjoy!

Hey, Mark I wanted to let you know that I just now was able to get back online today. My ISP in Midlothian, lost power due to a power outage today early this morning. Crap... today of all dam days...this was just great!!!! I am so frustrated that I missed the meeting today. How did it go? I am sure everyone liked your scenes. I just did not want you to think that I skipped out. Can I still attend the next Sunday meeting? What is your cell phone
number again? I could not find it or I would have called to let you know that I did not have an internet connection.
Regards,

No problema Steve!:)
Of course you can come next Sunday, you're one of us now and there is no escape for you!:D
I'll e-mail you on the number too.
I also want to get your Government Project converted with you into a ready portal prototype this coming week so we can invite them to it online together right afterward.
Let's go for it!:)

A quick update on our priority project. I received a detailed e-mail this morning in relation to more urgent (but closely related) projects in Europe which also tie indirectly into one of our other 5 project choices and can be pursued along a parallel timeframe and similar objectives path. This is very good news and I will be discussing it with you each this week in shared space as you each find the time to do so with me there.
In a nutshell, we are drawing significant attention already now in Europe and that coincides perfectly with two of our existing projects and will generate more very rapidly as we proceed with each.
Talk to you in shared space on it soon,
- Mark |
