I was going to write a longer review, but why not cut to the chase.
Note: I had no expectations for this movie other than it was going to stink as a 'giant monster movie'...
With that....
Lose 5 minutes at the beginning and add another minute or so of clear views of the monster and it would have been a masterpiece of modern technical filmmaking. Keeping in mind this was not going to be War and Peace, it was a 'giant monster movie'. :)
I for one DO NOT LIKE the point of view hand-held camera thing but in this movie it was used almost to perfection for creating the mood and feel of the entire movie being experienced from the POV of the people, not the monster.
In the end I would say this is easily the greatest giant monster movie to date other than my three all time favorites..
- The original Black and White Godzilla
- The original Rodan
- The war or the Gargantuas
I do hope for a sequel…
In closing a few notes from some of the bogus reviews I have read…
1- They do show the monster…eventually ….clear and visible… if you read otherwise, people are lying to you.
2- After the movie, do yourself a favor when you leave the theater make an effort to look around while not moving your head. The muscles in your eyes will still be tweaking from the movie and a headache can occur. But if you continue to 'bounce' your eyes around for a few minutes after the film seems to get the muscles to slowly relax.
3- Some of the blending of real and CGI was almost flawless …not all the time …but almost every time. To match the CGI stuff with the POV camera work to such a level was truly impressive. A labor of love for the creators and as a HUGE 'Giant Monster Movie' fan it all almost brought a tear to my eye.
4- Any refernece to 911 events in the reviews is just stupid. Just because a skyscrpaer gets knocked over in New York City does not imply some deeper meaning to the film. It is a fun ride and there is no higher message within, least I did not feel/see/hear it.
Someone has gotten it right..well amost. I bit more wanton destruction would have been the cherry on top of the sundea. |

Yes, it was a great movie. However, I never really was emotionally involved with the characters during the movie. The handheld camera POV was meant to portray a sense of realism, however, it did not work, at least for me because I knew it was just a movie. Halfway through the movie I figured out what was missing.....there was not a single piece of music. It totally makes sense not to include the music, but that lack of it did impact my emotions towards the character. This is were I think the actors should have done a better job or perhaps the director did not direct the actors properly. I feel the actors did not pull me in, emotionally. It also makes sense on how the movie ended but I truly did not get to see how it ends, which was very disappointing.

Best review so far:
"Think of it as 'Friends' vs. Godzilla"
Then there's the comic version: (http://speterdavis.com/mcomics_cloverfield.html) (spoiler alert) |

Anunnaki-
I just realized that about the music after reading your post. Back to this movie being exactly what he creators wanted (good or bad).
The lack of music coupled with all of the ambient and background noises added to the overall tension.
Always asking your self what is going on. The lack of music in the end added to the overall 'you are there...this is real' effect.
Spacecadet- lol..that was a classic review.

Someone on youtube put this together, I do not care for the song but the scenes selected really capture what made this 1966 movie a classic of the genre. |

Watched it twice already. Going a 3rd time this Saturday (friends I promised to see it with but who's schedules didn't sync up...) No complaints from me. :)
I loved it, but there is one thing to say for a movie like this.
If you're looking for the classic Hollywood movie with everything tied up in a pretty bow at the end forget it. That's not what the movie is about.
By the way, with all the viral marketing strategy (look up www.slusho.jp) you'll find there's a whole lot more going on in the back story for the movie than you might know.

Above web page isn't a spoiler for the movie... video footage shown was part of the back story.
Interesting that the faux news videos were put out in Italian, Spanish, and German. Have heard there was an English version too but haven't found it yet.
Beginning was definitely longer than most folks patience but in some ways this just seemed to immerse people further by making them forget they were watching a monster movie. It may even bore you for a bit. Action picks up.... waaaay up!!!
Plenty of room for a prequel/sequel but not necessarily in the usual way. I imagine we may see more dealing with the back story and not just that specific attack by the monster.
P.S. I know the slusho site appears to be a Japaneese frozen soft drink site but it's really not. Read through some of the items and you'll see that it's main ingredient is mined from the ocean bottom. Weird! |

Now I keep hearing people saying how bad it is and people walking out on it and demanding their money back. For some reaon that makes me want to see it more and see how bad it can be, but I'll wait for video. |

Well I just rented the DVD and will stand by my original post...
' Lose 5 minutes at the beginning and add another minute or so of clear views of the monster and it would have been a masterpiece of modern technical filmmaking. '
This movie was even better on a smaller screen!
The video quality bumps up as the image is much smaller than what was in the theater obviously...and the camera movement is less overwhelming, at least for me.
What a great movie!
Not sure how they will put it together as some aspects of this movie are 'one of a kind', but I await the sequel even more now!
WOW!! |
