Complete links and directions to the meetings along with a general description of what the Developers Outreach is all about may be found in the post immediately following this one. Please note that we have just changed to a new dedicated portal which Caligari has provided for our Developers Outreach use only and we will no longer be meeting in the Scriptorium portal (Except on Tuesday nights).
We're definitely on a roll together already folks, there's no denying that now! :)
Hi everybody,
This coming Sunday we will be having our seventh "Developers Outreach" weekly Sunday meeting and workshop together.
My apologies to Roman and to those of you who like myself had anticipated Roman attending our last Sunday meeting together, apparently I must have misunderstood which Sunday meeting he had mentioned weeks ago that he was planning to attend. Completely my fault, not Roman's.
Roman is always welcome to drop in any time to any of our Sunday meetings of course, and in the D.O. Teams we're all looking forward to personally sharing with him the many exciting things we have now begun together whenever he finds an opportunity to come join us.
This coming Sunday we will be sharing together quite a few new things we have each been working on all week both independently and collaboratively.
This last week we have undertaken a kind of "Modular Approach" to creating our project designs so that they will be versatile in many types of projects.
Already in this last week we've each been utilizing our new DO-Dedicated "InterPortal 1" Portal in truePlace quite a few times, building and discussing project items and projects in greater detail as well as helping each other with project-related scripting and modeling, organizing our project approaches in parallel, determining specific reasearch objectives, and sharing together updated details in relation to our projects on a daily basis.
There are some very innovative things we have already begun to develop together, and I'm very happy to see and to say that the DO Teams are genuinely beginning to define themselves in very effective ways toward very clear objectives, both in individual focus and collaborative effect.
We have also been very fortunate in attracting both entirely new potential Server Package Investors this week as well as entirely new DO Team Members this week. In fact to be very honest with you all I am truly astonished at how very rapidly and how very well this is all already coming together.
Our work together toward servicing our Primary Project this week and last has now suddenly also led directly to the very specific interest of a second and unrelated overseas Investor in direct relation to one of our Secondary Projects... bumping the priority level on that right through the roof!
In turn, what we are now developing together toward each of these specific Priority Project objectives are also things which can be readily and swiftly modified and adapted to service an unlimited number of additional simultaneous Market Projects anytime we wish to approach them. Nearly everything we are creating together here can be reused by us constantly to streamline our concept-to-prototype development time, making us far more effective together every single week. We already have a dynamic building.
Still, as I mentioned a few weeks ago here in another Sunday announcement thread, even if we had ten thousand of us here joining in on doing the very same things which the DO Teams are now doing, we could never even begin to saturate the markets for what we can produce. They truly are global.
As those of us in the DO Teams have already discovered though meeting a very seasoned Professional Investor's Representative face-to-face on Sundays, a vast number of genuinely capable Investors out there are not only willing and very actively seeking Virtual Investments right now, they are also already becoming directly impressed by the completely unique advantages which a trueServe enabled Customized Virtual World could offer them. And we haven't even begun to seek them out remember, they sought us out when they saw this D.O. Initiative go live. When we start seeking them out directly in the weeks ahead, this will take off like wildfire worldwide. They have long needed exactly what we are about to offer them together, and the only reason most of them aren't already banging down our doors to hire us all and snap up trueServe investments as fast as they can is simply because they don't yet know about us. But that is changing quickly already.
There is plenty of room in the Developers Outreach for everyone here in this Community to find a comfortable place to participate, and the door is wide open for everyone to drop in and see for yourself what an exciting thing it truly could be for you to join us.
Our agenda for this coming meeting is to share and examine all the things we have each created since this last Sunday with an eye toward bringing them together harmoniously in several very specific types of portal designs which we will actually complete together in the following week.
In addition to that, this Sunday we will be discussing collaboratively the specific manner in which we wish together in the following week to design, build, finish, and announce (to certain regional prospective Virtual World Host Investors), a Portal Event specifically designed to secure those Design and Server Investments in February. For starters this will be in direct relation to our recently upgraded Priority Project 3.
As for all you folks already in the DO Teams, thanks... your energy, enthusiasm, teamwork, and dedication to all this is exciting and contageous, and thanks to you each this year is already becoming fantastic!:)
See you all Sunday folks!

About all Developers Outreach meetings:
"Developers Outreach" is an extremely active new "Community workshop," focusing very specifically on the following things:
1) 3D Immersive Scene Design and Marketing
Developing our individual skills together (both individually and in focused voluntary teams) in the specific direction of designing immersive scenes for direct personal income. In this part of the workshop we will be examining and developing 3D Immersive Scenes for actual sale, lease, and licensing, worldwide.
There are numerous ways to secure an income through 3D Immersive Scene Design both offline and online (shared space portal packages, shared space server packages, Immersive truePlay CD's, etcetera) and we will be discussing them all together. Beyond that, in each case we will also actually be "going for it," both individually and in teams, the objective at these workshops being actual income rather than passive education.
How long it takes us each to begin securing real income from these workshops will of course be in direct relation to how much time and focus we each invest in these efforts. You alone will be determining in each case how to approach specific markets, although you will have a lot of help in that regard. So you could market inexpensive CD's in your area, or take a more profitable approach and design either portal scenes to license or server packages to market worldwide, the choice is entirely yours. One thing is certain though, there are ways to make a very good income with 3D Immersive Scene Design, and some of them could be genuinely lucrative.
2) Outreach Event Design and Implementation
In addition to identifying and approaching specific markets for income with our individual designs, we will also be "testing the waters" by designing scenes together which will be specifically targeted in their design to attract entirely new markets to shared space and trueSpace investment.
This will entail identifying markets which we decide would be "fun to approach," and designing both Introductory Imersive truePlay CD's and Temporary Portal Scenes together where we will hold occasional events designed to impress them with the potentials of shared space, and invite them to these events directly through the dissemination of Immersive CD's and/or downloadable Immersive truePlay Scenes.
This approach could of course lead to related income in several ways, but the primary distinction between these "outreach" approaches and the "marketing" approaches discussed above will be that these "outreach" approaches will just be more of "a fun thing to try together," more of a "shot in the dark" than a meticulously designed and focused business approach.
3) Shared Space Development Workshop
We all benefit from advancements in shared space, especially those of us with an eye toward profiting from it directly. In the course of the months ahead we will be encountering entirely new ways together to develop shared space and we will be sharing them openly as always.
The genuinely tremendous talent and innovation of the Caligari Community will always be introducing new and more wonderful capabilities and activities to shared space settings in the years ahead.
In the Shared Space Development Workshop we will be constantly watching for and discussing together new ways in which we may adopt and adapt new scripting developments for shared space application and innovation. There will be no focus here on income at all, rather this particular aspect of the Sunday meetings will be focused on how we can immediately utilize new script developments in shared spaces for the benefit of everyone.
Directions to the Developers Outreach meetings:
We have just received a new dedicated portal from Caligari for all our DO use so we will no longer be meeting in the Scriptorium (Except on Tuesday nights).
Our new temporary dedicated portal is called "InterPortal 1" and is on the truePlaces Server (tpportal.caligari.com) at server port number 1660.
For the convenience of trueSpace and truePlay users I have attached two RsScn format scene files to the end of this post right after two screenshots which depict them.
Please be sure to download the correct scene file for your intended use (ie: trueSpace or truePlay), since each scene will only function when loaded into the correct program, either trueSpace or truePlay, but not both.
These meetings are held weekly on Sundays starting at 12:00PM PST (on the Caligari Clock: http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp (http://www.caligari.com/CaligariClock.asp) ) but if you can't make it at the start time drop in anytime afterward, they are always very interesting meetings with very lively open discussions.
In the unlikely event of a server crash during any of our meetings we have designated the trueSpace server (tsportal.caligari.com) Meetingroom (portal 1111) as an alternate but since this alternate server is a trueSpace-only server, folks using truePlay to access the meeting in the event of a server crash will not be capable of logging in there with truePlay, they must use the trueSpace7.5Demo or trueSpace7.xx directly.
It is recommended to come to these meetings with XP rather than Vista due to the current (and no doubt temporary) issues with Vista audio in shared spaces, and it is also recommended to come with either trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo rather than truePlay in case of a server crash in which event truePlay will be unable to access our trueSpace-only backup server portal where we would immediately re-convene our meeting.
Manual Server Settings: (for setting the destination yourselves in trueSpace):
DefServer= tpportal.caligari.com
DefServerPort= 1660
LazyMan's Approach: (load the correct scene provided below and click the link)
Below the two screenshots here are the actual RsScn files for download and use within trueSpace or truePlay - be sure to download the correct one for your intended use:
If you wish to attend the meeting using trueSpace or the trueSpace Demo, download and then load into trueSpace the scene named "SundayLinks.RsScn"
If you wish to attend the meeting using truePlay download and then load into truePlay the scene named "SundayTruePlayLink.RsScn"
If you have loaded the correct scene for your program clicking on the Developers Outreach link in each will bring you right to us if the server is not down at the time and if you enter the correct username and password.
See you there! |

For the DO Teams on Thursday January 24th (and beyond).
Several of us will be in and out of Interportal 1 a lot on Thursday working on various project models and scripting for them. 3Dfrog, Robert, and I will be there for sure and a few others on the teams will very likely drop in and out all day too there, so if you want to work on anything project-wise with us Thursday be sure to drop in there throughout the day if you can and we'd be happy to work with you along with what we are currently doing.:)
For the sake of those of us who are new at all this I want to describe in detail some vital things to be aware of at all times when working in shared space. Please familiarize yourselves very well with the rules below, thanks.:)
Please remember whenever you are there to do the following:
Whenever you enter the Developers Outreach-dedicated portal ("InterPortal 1") the first thing you should always do is save the scene as a scene format (RsScn) file in your trueSpace Scenes Library, so be sure to open that Library in your trueSpace Stack first thing as a habit and after saving it there just mouse-over the newly saved scene's thumbnail image in your Stack View and determine the total scene size... which should AT ALL TIMES be less than 5 meg total in size. If it is not, start deleting objects in the DO Portal until it is under 5 meg.
Since we will each be very heavily involved in the months ahead with the business of designing portal scenes and placing them online as objects for evaluation, testing, market events, and collaborative development, it is vital that each one of us in the D.O. Teams be on exactly the same page in this regard.
The "InterPortal 1" D.O.-Dedicated portal should always be checked for size in this way immediately on entry by each of us as a very important habit, and at all times when any one of us is in our "InterPortal 1" D.O.-Dedicated portal, every one of us should be able to say (in an instant if asked) exactly what the current scene filesize is, because we should each be constantly aware of it's size as a rule.
Every time any one of us places objects there we always have backups saved offline, so if you need the room empty just empty it, don't be worried in the least about deleting what any of us may have placed there if it is in your way when you are there to work on anything D.O.-related.
There are some objects which you should never delete however, since they are aspects of the basic portal scene itself rather than things placed there by us (although we have backups of them as well). The following is a list of them, and when deleting items in the portal it is always best to save the portal first in case you afterward need to restore anything you accidentally deleted but shouldn't have... in which case you can then go offline, open the saved portal scene in Workspace, enter the Link Editor window, select each object in the LE one at a time, and when seleted save each object as a trueSpace RsObj-format object in your Objects Library Stack. Then go back online and place the objects you need to back into the portal scene where they formerly were (which is another very important reason to always save the scene on entry).
Do not delete the following objects (all are visible in the LE):
1) Entry Point
This is the entry point camera for all people entering the portal - the portal will still open without one, but it is always a pain to have to set up the position of the entry point camera perfectly so it is best to just leave it alone altogether until you get good at doing that yourself offline. Also NEVER change the "field of view" (FOV) aspect on the entry point camera in the LE unless you see in the LE that the FOV indicates a number other than 0.500, in which case you should then set the FOV to 0.500 right away, exit right away and return. Otherwise your vision throughout that entire session will be distorted. 0.500 is the correct deafault FOV for our portal.
2) Workspace - Ground
This is the default workspace view for the portal ground plane, wire, solid, or none (invisible). There is no need to ever delete this, if you don't want to use it just set it in the LE to the "none" option and it will be invisible.
3) Shared space (In the LE Window this sometimes appears as "Shared")
This is that flat rectangular 3D object in the scene which has a red tab on it and a green circle on it with a white arrow. When clicked in the DO Portal it will take you to the truePlace Meetingroom portal. It is the default "exit" method for our DO portal, and for the sake of those who are less familiar with interportal navigation, please leave it somewhere visible in the DO portal at all times so they can remain in truePlaces if they accidentally wander into our DO Portal and are looking for a way to exit.
Anything else in the portal... any skydome, any 3D object ground plane, any user-placed objects... all of it can go if you need it to anytime to create space for whatever Developers Outreach related work you are doing there at the time. You do not have to return everything as it was before you came in there at all, we each have backup scenes saved as a rule, and so should you. We can replace what we need anytime we need it, don't worry about that at all when you are there for any DO-related work.
There are also eight other rules which I have already made everyone aware of I think, but I will mention them again below to be certain:
1) Never use Modelside toolbars when online in shared space - that crashes the portal and sometimes the server.
2) Never place or create NURBS objects in shared space - that causes various types of crashes including portal or server.
3) Never place objects with "bones" in shared space - that crashes the portal and may crash the server as well.
4) Never use the various mesh generators supplied with trueSpace in shared space - They usually crash the portal.
5) Never drag images from any source into the Workspace view while in shared space - if you need to place DX9 shaders on an object do it offline rather than online until you are familiar with the various ways that can go badly online - and if you need to place images in the scene for others to see, use either the "framed image display" device (being certain at all times to be aware of both the portal size and your image size combined before placing them there) or apply your image to a mesh plane offline and save it as an object for later introduction to the online portal (again being aware of the combined filesizes).
6) Never leave scripts running on timers in shared space when you leave, and if you crash return to the space immediately and make certain the timers there are turned off again if they are still running.
7) Never use Subdivision Surfaces in shared space - it often causes portal crashes.
8) If you have a problem or cause one don't panic, just PM me here about it or if it is very urgent just contact paul@caligari.com - he can fix anything. We all make mistakes in shared space, so just let someone know and we will deal with it as rapidly as possible, but we do need to know right away.
In spite of these things which we currently need to be aware of, there are zillions of things we can do in shared space which cause no problems whatsoever. Many of these issues mentioned above will undoubtedly be dealt with very soon by Caligari too, of course, so we consider them all very temporary for now.
So we'll be seeing you Thursday (as well as throughout the week) if you have a chance to drop in, and anything you'd like to work on there with us in relation to any Developers Outreach projects or concepts will always be very welcome there just as you are, just bring it!:)
Thanks,
- 3dvisuals dude |

Hey Mark:
Not sure if you know this or not, but when you load your truePlay scene in truePlay and click on your link it opens a second trueplay. It seems that the best way to do this is by way of a shortcut. No need to open truePlay first just double click on the shortcut and truePlay starts with the desired link. Here is one for truePlay and trueSpace that both point to the Developer's Outreach. HTH |

Cool, thanks!
I was under the impression before that the url links were path specific to truePlay or trueSpace being on drive C which is often not the case.
I see here though that the code in the truePlay url link has no path like that although the url code for the trueSpace link does. Here's the code in each case from the files above:
truePlay URL:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=caligari.trueplay://tpportal.caligari.com/1660
IDList=
[{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Prop3=19,0
So this would work regardless of where truePlay was installed which is great!
I am curious as to the "IDList" and "Prop3" properties though...
The "IDList" seems to be either a session ID or a D3D Eyecam Identifyer, right?
And the "Prop3" has me baffled! LOL! What is it's significance and options?
trueSpace URL:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=caligari.truespace://tpportal.caligari.com/1660
IDList=
IconFile=C:\trueSpace76\tS\ts7.exe
HotKey=0
IconIndex=0
[{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Prop3=19,0
This also seems to be able to work with trueSpace regardless of install directory but the "IconFile" aspects call a file and path I don't have at all.:confused:
Also "IDList" is not populated in this trueSpace url code why?
I assume I can place these as working url code then right in the Sunday announcement posts here?
Thanks for the links.:) Sorry for all the related questions though!:o
Oh and yes, I was aware that the truePlay scene link I provided here opens a second instance of truePlay when ckicked inside a first instance. It was a temporary workaround I created when Caligari changed their portal address which had been hard-coded into truePlay1.3's default opening scene, so that users of truePlay1.3 were unable for quite some time (and may still be) to use the default truePlay1.3 opening scene link to open the hard-coded gateway url which had subsequently been changed. Maybe it has been changed back now though, I haven't tested it in weeks.

Not sure about the properties. I did change the Icon for the trueSpace link and I am not sure of the consequences. I updated the previous post which does not have the Icon changed. HTH |

If it all works it's a much better method than what I was using before so that will be great!
I appreciate the help!

Howdy,
I put together a castle scene for today that's cool to explore. It's about 2 football fields long and wide with a big open air courtyard we can just float in as usual when we get tired of exploring it all. It's small enough for shared space but will be removed when and if we all wish to bring objects in or do something else in there, but it will give you some portal design ideas to build on for sure.
I also did some script mods this week and may bring those in too, basic stuff but interactive and fairly modular for re-use.
Steve plans to bring in some images of the stuff he's been up to this week, he's been pretty busy with modeling and scripting immersive scenes lately for truePlay offline use and maybe online use with a few mods thrown in.
Dennis made a very cool display case with a very unique shape. Not sure what else may be in the works there but he's off to a great start already.
There may be a few other folk with various things to share as well.
See you there,

Um, I took antibiotics this week!
Wait... that's not relevant...
OK OK I admit it... I'm coming empty handed! :D
Sounds good. I'm taking a cardio class at 2 but will be there around 3:20 or so Eastern time, 20 minutes after the meeting starts. That is, if
I survive the class! First one in weeks, after being sick.
If there is anything anyone needs help with over the week (scripting, scripted animation, animation in general) I can help!
Plus I owe butter some time as well! :)

Oh a castle, very cool. Unfortunately I didn't get anything done except the display case this week. I ummmm took antibiotics too :p. Seriously though, it was a wacky week for me otherwise I would have done more. I planned on it, it just didn't happen. And I just realized I totally forgot about the animators club yesterday :o. Oh well, I was at my nephew's birthday party yesterday anyway. Man, I gotta get on track :o |

Yeah... it's got some cool places here and there to perch your tripod.:D
Actually it's a huge open area that's walled with walkways all around, turrets, a fairly cool gatehouse with arhery slots, etc... I just wish I could have one of these in the realworld!:D
See ya there in a few minutes,
