One more topic I want to throw open, where has Glue As Child gone? My only glue tool now is Glue as Sibbling. At first I thought that the button had some how gone missing, but when I went into the PDF manual, only Glue as Sibbling is mentioned. What happened?

It was removed.

tS was almost unique in allowing such complicated hierarchies to objects in the past. The problem is that such complex hierarchies export badly to other applications, and indeed "export" badly to the workspace too.

A deep and wide hierarchy will cause the workspace to behave very slowly, and cause any bridge operations to take a very long time.

In order to prevent people creating this sort of a structure and so causing themselves problems in tS7.5, the tool was removed. Not having it to get into trouble with is easier than getting into trouble with it then having to try and correct the resulting model :)

Here is one area where booleans can be useful - you can use them to group non-toucing objects. For example on my ship model, I have lots of railings. Rather than have a group of railing posts glued together, I booleaned them into one object. Since they do not touch, strange geometry and difficult to resolve math does NOT occur, making the booleans safe.

I went further and made groups out of other non-touching objects too, getting a best of both worlds - a nice to work with organisation to my model, but without an overly complex hierarchy. While you may miss it initialy, you'll find it is possible to do without it, and that your resulting models are much more generally acceptable across applications (see the appendix on Seal of Good Modeling which I wrote, for more in depth info and examples)

You could say it's grown up and left home!;)

heheh, thanks spacekdet for give that link.. I had not seen TomG's site - that was fun ^_^

hierarchies in tS are still rather mysterious to me, although I used them in 3D Canvas all the time...

Thanks Spacekdet. I've actually been to Toms site before but it was a while ago - I always wanted to see the War Mages room done in 6.6 and in the various tS 7.x renderers. That would make a cool progressive set of images showing the evolution of tS. I recall suggesting it to Tom at one stage but he was he was too busy working for some software company!! ;):D

Butterpaw - hierarchies aren't really that mysterious - they are just ways of organising files. Every time you use Windows Explorer or browse around your own folder tree on your own hard-drive you are navigating hierarchies. HTH

Thanks, W!ZARD, that part I actually do understand ... but I haven't noticed exactly where it is with tS.. In 3D Canvas you could not help but trip over it.

I do use the layers though... downright handy.:D

Ah, thanks for the explaination, Tom. So, what would happen now if I imported an old model which was glued together using Glue as Child? Also, since there is only one glue tool now, perhaps a rename would be better. Just call it Glue instead of Glue as Sibbling as that implies there are other methods of gluing objects together.

Have you tried the Decompose tool?
Also from the ReadMe file that ships with tS7.5.1:
Working with hierarchies:
You will find a detailed section in the manual regarding working with hierarchies. One useful free utility is the MeshCollapse plugin, which is located in tsx folder of trueSpace7. This plugin will convert a hierarchy (objects joined using the Glue tools) to a single booleaned object. This may be particularly useful when working with scenes and objects imported from earlier versions of trueSpace or from other applications.

tS will still import "old" objects with wide and deep hierarchies. They will work, but they will slow the workspace down significantly, and the bridge too.

You can clear that hierarchy with Split Hierarchy and rebuild with the single remaining Glue tool, or by manually booleaning. You can also use the Mesh Collapse plugin to instantly turn it into one booleaned object too (I believe it still decomposes with Decompose Into Objects even after this Mesh Collapse operation, making it different from doing your own boolean one by one).

So trueBlue was spot on with all of those :)

Just want to ad that when I import from another

app and have saved all objects in the object format at once

like from moi 3d I use decompose into objects first and then split into hirarchy.

The whole thing starts to run and works flawlessly !

Nice to watch too !
