Romans in Virtual heaven right now. :D
More like talking to his banker about setting up a new pension fund!
Yes,yes-I know he deserves the reward, but do TS users deserve MS? :( |

My My, (shakes head)
I'm pretty sure Roman said they have a lot of freedom to do what they want in developing the product.
Perhaps optimism is blinding me, but I don't think so. :) |

There is also MS's past record of how they acted in past take overs. Time will tell. |

That's true, but it depends on what they need from TS. MS has a large say in things either way. |

hi Folks.
Wow, talk about unexpected news. Didn't see this coming in a million years! This thread is way too long to read it all but I have skimmed most of it.
So, my thoughts (since everyone else has chipped in)...
Well, first, I'm going to raise my hand here and say that I'm a Microsoft fan. Yes, I love Mircosoft, no joke. I love Windows, I love Office, I love it all.
Now, with regards to this news... Mixed opinions.
First, sounds good to me. If it gives Caligari more resources to play with, that can only be a good thing. But Paul (Splinters) has raised a good point about what this means for TrueSpace's future? There hasn't been a lot of info on TrueSpace 7.6 lately which makes me wonder has Caligari shifted their focus to the realtime environment scene. If so, and given the news itself, this does raise the questions Paul has asked about what will this mean for the future of TrueSpace as a 3D rendering and animation tool?
I'm afraid I'm with Paul, too, when it comes to moving elsewhere. Like him, I'm very rooted in the TrueSpace environment. I have Lightwave 3D 8 and a load of books on how to use it but I'd be lying if I said I was making any real progress with it. It's a very different beast to work with and while some of its tools are impressive, it's workflow is more complex in places compared to the ease of working with TrueSpace. If Caligari does change its focus in the future and moves to a realtime environment based app, I guess I'll be moving over to the Newtek camp.
While I appreciate that Roman is probably away with the Microsoft folks talking and finalising this deal, I am a bit concerned that beyond the initial news release, there's been no word from anyone at Caligari addressing the issues being raised here. Even tonights online chat, Tom has said this news will not be dicussed at all. Kind of leaves you worried about where things are going to go? I'll certainly be looking forward to hearing an official statement from Caligari about the future. |

Having waited patiently for literally years, I finally take the plunge and purchase TS, Why now after watching and waiting for almost 4 years... because at long last it started to develop useful character animation tools. Also because it has been blatently obvious for years that both the users and founder are passionate about this unique program, that the VERY unique interaction between CEO and users ABSOLUTELY ensured this program was going places.
What can I say I at long last purchased the TS7.51, Vray, and all the tutorials8 weeks ago. It has gone places alright, but just after I join the ride there is a HUGE handbrake turn. NOOO this is not where I wanted to go.
Can I see virtual earth needing ik handles? skin modifiers and such .... a big fat NO..
Gutted I am !
Hmm maybe a different use might be, that Virtual Earth is planning that as you zoom into your house it waves at you in order to make it easier to see! The traffic will be animated? Ok Ok, I propose a traffic light LE module, perhaps even some 3d animated ducks for my local park, nah that would be quackers :D
Ok to be fair I realise that there were never any promises and the software is bought as it stands at the time of purchase.
I bought the software knowing that it was in a state of flux what with the bridge etc, but I felt I was embarking on a long term development and learning trip. As a direct result I didn't begrudge shelling out for what really is somewhat of a muddled program from a newcomers perspective. it would get sorted in time.
Do I want a refund... NO
Do I Congratulate the CEO on his good news.. absolutely YES
I'm off to change the transparency settings on my crystal ball now, they are definitely not the correct settings for sure!!
Yours IKHandel
PS lol oh I forgot to say HI to one and all..... what a first post sheesh :p
(I can't work out which is better, fk or ik for animating the crowd on the top down view of the football stadium near my house) hmmm >> oh well the photo is at least 1 year out of date anyway. |

I am not poking fun at your 'english' Igor, but I could not read that line without thinking of yoda...thanks for that and cheering me up...:jumpy: |

I have been a long time fan of Caligari back in the days of the Amiga....yes I am old..lol. I just want to try to encourage all you Artists....What you can create just blows me away. To see what you all can do with TrueSpace is awe inspiring. For the longest time even TrueSpace has been like a blank sheet of paper to me. I am honest to say that I don't think I will ever become an Artist like you guys. But one thing I love about TS is the ease of use. Not sure where I am going with this, but I just wanted to say something to this community. You guys and gals do inspire me, even though I can't produce stuff like you guys can do. So for what it is worth thank you for the inspiration and I do hope this community and Truespace will continue.
Regards,

Very welcome Splinter. I just had a coffee to try n chill out lol, man this has put paid to me doing my modelling practice tonight,, I just can't settle... puff.. pant. My nurse has had to give me an extra pill ow lol Re read that.. ok ok it was a pants joke :D
I does remind me of a similar incident waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the mists of time. Does anyone here remember the Oric computer.. ( we are talking almost pre big bang here).
Well in those days when I had no grey hair, and did'nt need a nurse to prop me up at my pc, there were 2 up and coming personal computers. the zx spectrum, complete with tiny rubber keys (£99.99) and the Oric (£99.00). It was so early that the buying decision was neck and neck nobody knew anything about either! So I went wild with the 99 pence I saved and bought the Oric...... sheesh the rest is history... a year later I couldn't even give my Oric away lol..... Anyone who admits to remembering either of these has got to be on a zimmer for sure!
ok enough
May the farce be with you

And to think I sold my Microsoft Stock back in the 1980s to some guy named Paul who sold a few shares to me.
Oric computer? Isn't there a vacuum cleaner that's brand name Orick?
I started on old DEC computers. Large tape drives and some older keypunch entry consoles. (those punch outs made great confetti)
Oh yeah, during down times, we would see who could sneak in and play the Star Trek game that was designed in ASCII.
My first personal PC was the Atari 400 - I miss that 300 baud modem it had. :D |

Last paragraph of Norm's blog:
"Any artistic folks who are lamenting over future, imagine how useful your talents are now. How your eye for detail in a pristine 2d image will serve an "added" purpose in a realitime 3D environment. It is in all its simplicity a rendered series of still images. You work in 3D if you use trueSpace. You now just have an added ability to use your talents for realtime. I suggest you loose nothing and gain another venue for your art."
Is it just me or does this make it sound like TrueSpace's rendering side is gone, real time 3D is the way forward for it now. |

Sounds that way to me. It also sounds like they are saying that it's as part of the Virtual Earth world.
Apparently it's a crime to be interested in old fashioned uses for TS-VE or the highway, for us. |

I cannot help but feel that my intelligence is being insulted here. I know of the various aspects of tS and I have made my assumptions about what this 'acquisition' means but this does sound like a diversion from the inevitable bad news. "No, you don't want to be looking at that silly old thing...come and look at this nice shiny new thing...it's the future." "no really, it works just like the old one but it's shinier and new...go on, you know you want it."
Nowhere do I hear the words. 'Don't worry', just a reassurance that your skills can be transferred elsewhere. I had already worked that out for myself but was hoping I was wrong:(:(:( |

Please do not read anything into blogs from individuals. It would be too easy to jump to conclusions here, which is why the silence from us, to avoid people jumping to conclusions.
So whatever Norm chooses to write in his blog is NOT a statement of where Caligari and trueSpace is going.
This is a time where it would very easy to misunderstand, reach wrong conclusions etc, and we are trying to be very careful with information as a result.
And I remember the Oric and Spectrum, I was a Spectrum owner myself (because I was already a Sinclair person from the generation before with the ZX81). No zimmer quite yet though :)

The only image I can picture is that episode of the Simpsons where Homer started the computer company and Bill could not buy it so he destroyed it... I guess Roman wins..he make the dough and we loose the dough... MS as good as some of their software can be tend to up the price and lessen the quality.. |

The SILENCE is exactly the reason why people are speculating-because TS or MS can not be bothered to reassure the present user base.
I guess the present TS user base don't count any more, we don't fit into MSs plans for the future.
If Caligari is still interested, let's hear something more concrete than all of the deafening silence so far. |

I was thinking that...if Tom refers to the 'slience from us' then why is Norm saying different? Just who are 'us' now?
Look on the bright side Roman and team, if we weren't passionate about tS we wouldn't be around here speculating so much about it's future. |

There's no pulling in different directions - I am just asking that people remember what a blog is :)
A blog is an individual's personal thoughts and reflections, and I am asking our community not to interpret the blog as being some company statement, or some insider leak into where things are going :) If anyone says in a blog that online 3D is an exciting thing with new opportunities, then that's fine - but you can't generalise from that and assume anything about what trueSpace will or will not have in future.
Norm is merely sharing his thoughts on 3D in general and what opportunities lie ahead. The issue is that the community should not then take that blog and view it as having some reflection on what will or will not happen with tS.
Thanks!
Tom
And to cover Paul's post, Norm writing in his blog is again not something from "us" (as in Caligari). Just Norm as a person talking, with his thoughts and opinions. As ever, all official information on the topic is to be found on the website (and not in individual's blogs!). |

Real Time is a "nice feature", but is a computer upgrade gimmick at it's core and only usefully if your are painting directly onto the model. |

When I first read that Microsoft had bought Caligari I thought that it was sad but not that bad. I understod that this meant that any hope for a multi platform software was crushed but perhaps the software would be allowed to grow.
However, the more I read about it, the WORSE it seams.
This acquisition seam to be an direct aim against Google Earth and SketchUP.
Let me tell you my opinion about online worlds here: online 3D worlds are going nowhere. It has been the next big thing for 10 years. The bandwidth and CPU power have been here for 5 years and nothing has happened.
The truth is that people don't want them.
I have seen a great deal of hype concerning places like Second Life. I have yet to see anyone use it. I know that companies invest, but what have they got out of this? Nothing. Second Life claims to have millions of accounts, but most of them seams to only visit once and then leave after not finding anything that interest them.
Google Earth might be popular, but how many uses it on a regular occasion? I don't even have it installed. I doubt that MS version would get used more.
I am sorry, but this feels like a goodbye for Truespace as software. The 7.6 version will probably be the last major release that isn't crippled by MS attempt to defeat Google Earth. |
