If you are interested in Collaboration, come to the Sunday Developer's Outreach meeting. That's what Mark has been working so hard at, for months now.
Froo / Jason
I don't know about you Jason but I am locked out of shared space now on both Servers.
What DO?
I've had an e-mail on the DO and the status of trueServe out to Roman since the announcement.
I hear in e-mail that MS people are milling around in that new market portal I just put up. Put 3 and 3 together on that, I have.

I wonder if they will announce this at CGTALK or if anyone will talk about it. Doubt it.
Oh and as far as caligari making any comment, it has to go through MS first so don't hold your breath. |

Heidi, how can you be sure that Caligari are to have Autonomy, they are 'wholly owned' i.e. 100% by MS? I can see no law that says so just the following;
"Subsidiaries are separate, distinct legal entities for the purposes of taxation and regulation. For this reason, they differ from divisions, which are businesses fully integrated within the main company, and not legally or otherwise distinct from it".
I can't be any more sure than anyone else. But typically, when a company is brought in as a subsidiary it's because it is to retain it's autonomy. |

Sorry Mark... I don't get it...
I would say that MS folks are getting the tour of your efforts man. I would say this is a business to business exclusive meeting. I would say Roman is showing them what can be done. And it is best to do that without interruptions or distractions.
In other words, they are conducting a 'closed door' exclusive access meeting in the portal that YOU made.
Congratulations Mark! I think this is very good news for all of us. And all of that portal was created by Mark O'Dwyer.
My hat's off to you bro. |

I am starting to think that this is the best news I have heard in a while, but maybe for the wrong reasons. I think the potential for tS users to move into this market will be huge and this is definitely the way tS has been going since tS7.0 was revealed.
My only (selfish) concern is what tools will be available to me as an artist/illustrator.
It has also forced me to tear myself away from my safety blanket (ts) and venture out of my playpen into uncharted territory. Last night I played with Hexagon for a few hours and actually made something pretty cool in little time. I need to re-learn some of the shortcuts (I keep stabbing at Z, X and C!) but there is a genuinely nice package there. I then need to learn how to bring it all together into a scene in Carrara 5 and voila, I have a tS matching package for next to nothing.
I have spent too long reliant on tS and I forgot that I cut my teeth on Alias Studio back in the day. It is no one's fault but mine but this news has caused me to re-evaluate how dependant I have become on tS for my work and maybe that was not such a good idea.... |

We should all thank Caligari for giving us the tools to learn 3d.
Strange, but I remember paying for the Caligari tools that I have. Don't kid yourself, they put out software to make a profit from. If their reasons were purely altruistic, TS would have been free ware.
I'm sure the people at Caligari love what they are doing, but it IS a business, and businesses have one reason for existing-making money. Period. |

Hey Splinters,
I wouldnt just stop their. If I had a choice [ which I have, I have both ], I would more sway toward SILO. Its cheap also, but better supported and updated at the moment. Obviously it is a modeller only.
http://www.nevercenter.com/ - $159
As prize for the nicest and well specced app that I have used in a good while I would say have a look at MODO:
http://www.luxology.com/
I ended up with this at a hard to refuse price via DAZ3D a while back. Modo has Sculpt tools vearing toward Zbrush built in, its I/F is slick with excellent UVing and Painting tools. AND Modo 3.02 is imminent which is adding yet more tools and massive bug fixes. 3.01 was only released before Christmas.
Finally and for the princely sum of $99 you can get a $3000 + app called Houdini Master. For that money you get Houdini Apprentice HD which is the full uncompromised version of Houdini Master including the amazing Particle and Dynamics tools - for personal use is the only caveat:
http://www.sidefx.com/
These guys at sidefx are aggressively ramping up the amount of training DVDs and downloads at Digital Tutors. Also have started a whole class area over at 3D Buzz. What cannot be done by this app is not worth talking about.
Add to all this - if you are in the Sterling or Euro Zone and buying via dollars - the value is excellent!
Cheers

What was that 3D app that you mentioned about a year ago-I think it began with "A"____(something) ? Hmm.. 'Amorium', or something like that? |

It probably was Amorphium which is part of the Electric Image Universe range (sort of). It was very unique at the time I started using it but it is pretty basic now compared to Mudbox, Zbrush etc.
EDIT: Whoops, Frootee already beat me to it. |

What needs to be cleared up is if 7.6 and 8.0 have a future. Hard to sell anymore software if there is no answer.
Just so we can plan for the future, where does everyone want to meet if all of a sudden this site goes down?
Bring Kleenex. |

Peter... dude... Relax! Here, have a Guiness. :D
TNL! is next Thursday.
I figure portals are down so Caligari can show Microsoft the portals and what can be done, and what has been done: TNL! portal 1111, scriptor 1212, D.O. portal 1660 (A big One I Will Say), the Gallery, etc. etc. etc.
Caligari wants the places 'locked' to allow a private viewing by Microsoft.
Makes sense eh? |

Romans in Virtual heaven right now. :D He can now turn every resource he has to turning TS into a web only content creation tool as he has always wanted to!
Possibilities:
- Better polygon tools?
NAW! We have access to Photosynth now so we can remove all but the most basic polygon tools. We can channel that work into adding tools that help the user to upload their photography's and videos directly into Photosynth.
- Advances in the integrated render engine?
NAW! It's all Real Time now. We don't have a need to support or even have static renderer's now, so we can channel all of that work into better materials/shaders and add only the few extra tools that we need.
- Animation tools?
With all of the extra 'free time' the coders have they can remove all of the unneeded tools in favor of simplified animation tools guided by sliders.
- TS 7.6 and beyond will more than likely be marginalized if it continues at all. :/ Either way TS will more than likely be out of the 3D studio business or so reduced that it's a non-factor in using for general 3D purposes.
Oh & BTW! Caligari maybe a sub/partner of MS, but MS calls the shots when it comes to what MS wants. So expect TS stability to slowly start to equal MS's. But who knows this entire affair could be turned on it's ear by Spring or Summer.
And we've not seen enough of Autodesk's MAYA or Autodesk's Mudbox to see how this may go.... |

There was one last Thursday, and one this Thursday too - we run them every odd weekend in the month, so some months we have 3 rather than 2, and sometimes they end up one week apart (5th weekend in one month, 1st weekend in the next).
You can read more about tonight's TNL! here:

Exactly my thoughts. I find it hard to even want to use TS right now if it's going to become something else. Might as well start looking for an alternative right now 'just in case' |
