A valid point mykyl1966. Some things will still be better in 2d. I don't see 2d going away completely, I just see it being integrated in a 3d environment rather then the other way around. Imagine if you saw a product but wanted more information on it. I don't know about you but often times when I go to a webpage I don't find all of the information that I'm looking for with regards to that product. If it's the middle of the night I can't call customer service. If I was in a virtual world I could just walk up and ask an employee or others in the store for more information. Talking with them directly.
If set up correctly navigating a 3d world could be just as easy as navigating a 2d web. For instance you could possibly look for a specific store on a 2d page. A link will take you to the 3d store. Then they will have an interactive tool or 2d page that leads you directly to the product you want. It may not be advantageous in all circumstances, but it certainly could be in quite a few.
I do agree though, that education, research, entertainment, and social networking are probably the markets that can benefit most from online 3d worlds. I think there are many others that have potential, but are yet to find their place. |

I'm not sure where the issue of mental stability comes into it but I'm not telling anyone not to worry - I'm saying that I'm not worried - what others do is their choice not mine.
The reason I thought you must think I'm dumb is because you underlined stuff from Roman's blog which was painfully obvious and I've already considered.
The reason I'm confused, or rather totally bewildered, is because a donkey's ass would know that this would cause a massive stir, or even distress, in the community, but they're mystifyingly non-responsive.
Hopefully, that is now clear. Frankly, I think Prodigy and Steinie have summed it up best, and really the debate is over as far as whether or not Caligari have been very naughty.
All that remains is what the future holds, and whether that when the answers present themselves, Caligari will need to move to Rio or not. |

Maybe if a truespace ambassador is concerned perhaps it's better to listen, than dictate to them (or anybody else) whether they should be worried or not.
Not sure what difference that would make. I demoted myself last night from Ambassador as I don't want visitors to think they can ask me about this and then I have to let them down. I am proud to be associated with Caligari but I think I will remain 'demoted' until this blows over....:o |

A 3d shop online is close to pointless. When i want to order something I don't want to have to wander around a virtual store looking for that item. I want to be able to just see it listed in a simple clear way and then purchase.
Mike R
A fair point Mike however over half of the people who use the Internet are women - and, odd as it may seem to us menfolk - they LIKE to shop. In a typical household they do 80% of the shopping (men tend to buy the big ticket items) and in fact women spend 80% of the combined household income.
In addition, while it took longer to take off than many people imagined, on-line shopping is the fastest growing retail sector. Try to get a loan from the bank for a business venture without having a net marketing strategy!
I like your museum idea though! Here's another one - on-line car shows, sales, racing meets and not only digital simulations of real world cars but also custom vehicles that would not even be physically possible in the real world let alone street legal.
Most game platforms already have a net capability and use real time DX9 technology - it's a matter of pulling it all together.
@Transient - LOL! If I thought you were dumb I'd say 'Man, I think you're dumb' - where I come from it's called being honest and upfront. However it never occurred to me to think that you were dumb - you can express yourself well with words for a start. I do apologise if that's what you took from my words - obviously I wasn't clear enough.
I was not trying to be patronising by underlining Romans words - that's not my style. It was my interpretation of what's being said by many folk in these forums that some people were and are reacting to things they thought were said when in fact they weren't.
I have no idea if I'm right, wrong or half way in between - and neither does anyone else. But Roman did not say that trueSpace is dead or the off-line renderers are gone but many people are reacting as if that's what he said.
I don't see anyone worrying that in the future trueSpace will only render in black and white - Roman didn't say that either!!.
As far as 'mystifyingly non-responsive' - well that's one way to interpret whats going on. Let me offer another. Roman's just finalised an important deal and he's really happy with it and wants to share it with the community (he didn't have to say anything at all!). So he posts a blog entry that is totally positive in content - and bang! Half the community goes ballistic imagining the worst and ignoring what it is that he had actually said. I wouldn't be surprised if he's totally bloody terrified of what to say next!
No mystery there. He's just told us about an extraordinary development and half the folk here respond by throwing their toys out of the cot. If I were him I'd give myself a couple of days off and go buy some champagne and wait for the dust to settle.
@Prodigy - Re "What can i see here?
1) two fronts.. the Chilled side, that all is ok! everything is fine..and the other, who are like crazy searching a better answer.." Augusto - it's not either/ or it's both. Fear and excitement are both opposite ends of the same stick. We all want to see trueSpace grow, prosper, get better and preferably be tailored exactly to our individual personal needs - that last one is a tough ask because we're all wanting something slightly different but as for the other things - growing, prospering, getting better - well that's exactly what Romans most recent post said as I see it.
The hardest thing for me personally is seeing my friends and fellow trueSpacers upsetting themselves when we don't know for sure if there is any reason whatsoever to be upset! So please believe me if I'm on anyones 'side' it's the same side as everyone else!:)
@Splinters - You can take off your hat but you'll always be a trueSpace ambassador to me!!;) |

No, I don't. This is not shame, I just don't want anyone thinking that 'ambassador' status implies that I know any more than the rest of you. |

Hey Improv, can you refrain from your personal assaults? I note that you say you have better things to do. So do it. :) |

Do you feel better now? There is no need for personal comments of this nature. A person expressing a personal belief based on sound reasoning is not a fanboy. Making derogatory remarks about a person does not make the logic behind what they say any less logical.
If you can't discuss things in a polite and pleasant manner how do you expect anyone to take what you say seriously?
Speaking of blind affection and obedience improv you seem to be displaying both of those fanboy characteristics to your own negative agenda. You might want to think about that. |

Everyone;
MS did not just pop into Caligari offices the other day with a check made out to Roman Ormandy for the purchase of Caligari Corporation. This has been going on for quite some time. Longer than we all may think.
All I can say is, the beta team is testing as normal. No radical changes in the course are there. I do not see anything getting yanked. That would take time and money. The devs would need to waste time removing code, then beta testers would waste even more time to verify that the functionality has been successfully removed; rather than confirming that new functionality does indeed work, and fixed bugs are indeed fixed. This would result in delayed release dates wouldn't it? And after all, time is money. More than that in this particular situation it appears.
Seems to me that, in addition to the new Virtual Earth capabilities to be supported, truespace will continue to be developed as before. I simply do not see anything getting removed. Removed functionality means, high user attrition. And I seriously doubt MS nor Caligari want that.
Later,

Not really Chrono (well a bit maybe) but Froo is not at liberty to divulge the state of progress or features in tS7.6 but he simply says that the team is testing as normal as I am making icons when requested as normal...and for every icon made that means a new feature or option has just been added that needs it's own icon.
If you were wondering, I have 7.6 Beta builds simply so I can check the UI contains the correct icons each time I submit them but NDA or not I am also not at liberty to divulge the details.
Neither would be happening if it really all was coming to an abrupt end. I am not defending here, just applying logic from the point of view of Beta Tester (Froo)...:o |

No need to apologise. After getting up this morning I realise that my post came across as being abusive, but I was only trying to be clever (and evidently failing). I think maybe I need to use more smilies.:o
Normally, I like to be a lot more positive about things - I was one of the few not to damn Daz to hell with the Hex fiasco. But I still have to say that this is pretty poor form regardless of what Roman's new obligations are.
However, there is definitely no need to get personal over these differences of opinion (it's not the community's fault), so I think I will take prodigy's lead and gag myself until more official news arrives. |

Incorrect. This is based on Roman's statements in his blog. But Conjecture away everyone. Or, Chill out and just wait til we hear something. Pick one. Not to be rude but it should be abundantly obvious that no useful information can be gleaned from this 'conjecture'.
So. Have a great weekend,

I very much think for myself. I think it was demonstrated very clearly in another thread that I take great offense when some insinuates otherwise. I don't know why you're on this name calling rampage. Perhaps you need to step away and take a few breaths.
If I believe in online worlds, it's because I have personally experienced them and have realistic ideas of what can be achieved with them. I see the potential. If I have respect for Roman and the Caligari team, it's because I've gotten to know many of them and they have earned that respect.
I'm most certainly not a blind sheep just following Caligari because I'm a fan. There are things about the program that I don't like and have voiced my opinion on, and will continue to do so. Overall I like what it does, I like where it's going, and I like the team that makes it. All that is based on using it and getting to know the people that make it.
There really is no need for personal attacks around here. We can be mature enough to disagree on things without resorting to demeaning each other and name calling. |
